I was always frustrated that the emperor would have been killed in the Death Star explosion regardless of whether luke had confronted him. Luke would have helped more fighting on Endor or in an X-Wing.
Palpatine was an awesome villain. The way he taunts Luke was a work of art. He would get your blood boiling as he is laughing at you because he knows that you are too easy.
Moreover, it means he openly places his trust in a power far greater than hatred, anger, fear or lust. A power overlooked by the Emperor. The power of compassion. Of Love.
I've never known why he threw his lightsaber away. Turning it off and not killing vader was enough proof that he hadn't turned. He didn't have to throw it away and deprive himself of his only weapon when the emperor was sat there ready to kill him
@Joey100816 At this point in the saga we're not supposed to be thinking that Luke should've have kept on fighting - "go on, kill the Sith, Luke!"
We are supposed to see Luke's virtue, and realise that if he had fought - there could only be one winner... Palpatine.
By not fightning, by not giving in to his anger, by not giving Palpatine what he wants - then that is how Luke wins. The cycle of fear and hatred is finally broken.
Throwing the saber = Luke overcoming the temptations of the Dark Side
It is unavoidable. It is your destiny. You, like your father, are now... mine. I love that line. I know this scene has been made fun of before but that line says a lot about the Emperor. He doesn't say because it is cliche, he says it because he believes in it.
He is becoming like his father, falling into the same trap. Vader severed Luke's hand using the Dark Side, and now Luke tapped into it, severing Vader's hand. Luke realizes that his father is in truth a Jedi like himself, who was corrupted by Palpatine (as is evident in the dialogue). The only way to win is not to fall for Palpatines trick. Consequently, he places his trust in his father's compassion which ultimately saves him.
@Cr3scendo He realizes that he's going down the path to becoming his father if he follows through with killing Darth Vader. He would be playing right into the Emperor's hands and would take his father's own place as the Emperor's lapdog. At his point in the story, you remember that Luke's hand is robotic due to the events of The Empire Strikes Back.
sad that the emporer was so goofy in the new films, he just laughed and jumped around. its a shame when u see how creepy he was when he just talked and tempts (witch he should do!)
I will admit this about the prequels: Maul was badass, I liked the designs and environments, Ewan McGregor did a good job as Obi-Wan, and Ian McDiarmid did a good job as the Emperor.
@hokiepiratejedi hahaha I know i'm watching this amazing scene again as an adult and Palpatine is fucking hilarious! Brilliant acting and script writing
I always thought that the reason Sidious failed to tempt Luke was because he tried too late. With Anakin, Sidious was able to slowly tempt him from the time he was a padawan child to the time he was a Jedi Knight. As Chancellor Palpatine, Sidious was able to become a close friend of Anakin so that by the time he revealed his true identity Anakin wouldn't outright kill him. Instead Anakin would follow his advice since he trusted him. But with Luke he had to try on a whim at the last minute.
@shortstopshep He comes across way too strong and fast with the whole evil thing with Luke. His temptation of Anakin actually involved coming across as a kindly father figure. He's no longer willing or able to disguise his evil nature at this point. He's sort of like Sauron after he lost the ability to take on a fair form.
THIS WILL NEVER GET OLD!!! The originals were dark and fun... the new ones are too "cute and colorful" we need a new trilogy: Dark and evil.. i.e. part 7, 8, and 9..
He is still planning the sequel trilogy, he said episode 7 would come in 2019 after he releases all 6 epiodes in 3D... Episode 1 comes out in 3D in 2012... So 7, 8 an 9 are coming although since i don't follow the Star Wars Universe unless Darth Sidious is there i honestly don't really care....He was easily what made Episode 6 an the best thing about the prequels.
An since Anakin is dead, there really isn't any need for further sequels but money talks.
Money talks my friends, there even considering making a Boba Frett solo film with direction Joe Johnston... So while i hope it ends with return of the Jedi... Where's theres money there will be sequels, prequels, or Reboots.
This is my favorite part of the entire Star Wars saga and its emotional and ethical heart. Luke throwing aside his lightsaber is the ultimate gesture of contempt for the Emperor's evil - he may die, but he will die on his own terms, as a man. And the Emperor's response carries its own grudging respect as he at last acknowledges that the dorky disco-haired farm kid we began this journey with is, at last, a Jedi.
I thought I'd say Ian McDiarmid doesn't get the credit he deserves for his acting as the Emperor/Darth Sidious. He really brought a true villian to life in the Star Wars saga. I'm glad they used him for Episode XI and the prequal trilogy. One of the most underated actors of our time.
Yes you are right. I'm a very big fan of him too, of all great british actors like Sir Christopher Lee, Sir Ian McKellan, Brian Cox, Ciaran Hinds! And let me tell you one thing, I'm a actor too. And if Sir Ian would offer me to become his apprentice I would call him "MASTER" too! Because he is one!
@Exodianecross1978 ME TOO! (totally agree in the third comment, such clever comments on this video!).I am a fan of two Ian Mc something (Ian Mc Diarmid/Ian McKellen) and you too.And Sid is master anytime he wants, just had to ask me.All hali British actors, they RULE.
@guitarblazer4 ow,man i so agree witcha. He bringed to life the most incredible villain EVER,and he just don`t get the credit.I think he is BRILLIANT on Return of the Jedi and Revenge of the Sith(Although many people disagree). So,at least,I recognize him as a great actor and i am glad that youfeel the same way)
absolutely agree. he kills it in every scene. he's the most evil villian i think i've ever seen. so much hate. so much rage.
the emperor adds a key layer to the story and cinematic impact. with vader, we can't see his face, but the face is where the emotion is. McDiarmid fills in that gap for us and his seething rage and villainy shine through in a wonderful "he's so evil but i love him" kind of way.
@guitarblazer4 I find it really annoying that almost every star wars fan thinks that whiny bastard Darth Vader is the most badass villain. It's the emperor who is the true and pure evil of the saga.
I believe it is called "Final Duel" if I'm not mistaken. On the soundtrack it's called "The Battle of Endor 2: Leia Is wounded - The Duel Begins/Overtaking"
Luke- "Your over-confidence is your weakness." Emperor-"Your goofy haircut is yours!" Luke-"Why are you such a hardass?" Emperor-"Well, my father was an alchaholic and he used to beat me..."
