Yes, this is arguably Elton's best song ever, although I think the moment, "Back to the howling old woods..." (specifically, the part, 'Back to....") in the song, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is his best ever progression.
@thecompleteopposite I know! Reminds me of the other day... my health teacher and a couple of students and I are planning an anti-bullying/community-building/suicide-awareness week at our school, and we were discussing songs that might work well to play before the first bell rings, songs that might be motivational and encourage people to be kind. I suggested "Bridge over Troubled Water" by Simon and Garfunkel. He said, "It's three times as old as any student here." I said, "But it's GREAT."
2 people are Haley Reinhart and one of her stupid fucking fans.
As a related side note, anyone who considered her butchery of this last night so much as CLOSE to as good as Elton's version does not deserve the ability to hear.
@mindaugas496 Me too. 11 years old in Hollywood, CA. This is the song that sends the childhood memories flying back! Be grateful you're not 11 years old today.
I saw Elton LIVE last year and I honestly didn't know before that this was his song. I only knew the piano from Mary J Blige's Deep Inside...anyway, it was a great experience for me :)
You knew Elton John was the shit when Frankie Crocker was playing "Bennie & The Jets" on WBLS in New York...and it was a R&B station!....Elton at that time had major crossover appeal and after nearly 40 YEARS this still sounds as fresh as when it came out!
The first time I saw EJ live was back in 1974 at Madison Sq. Garden when he was promoting the YBRoad album. Great concert. He brought John Lennon on stage to play a few songs with him that night. Sadly, it was the last time Lennon ever set foot on a stage.
Radio stations would over play this song and most of his others... but you couldn't ask for a better artist being played over and over Especially with some of the sappy crap that was hitting the air waves. As joey put it so perfectly..When he dropped a single, everyone took a back seat. Classic.

I concur Supermessiah8. Musically, Elton has always been a major part of my life, FUCKING MAJOR!!!!! I guess Gus added the crowd noises since the songs about a fictious rock group, giving it sort of an added dimension, anyways it's all way to cool!!!
A man can't insult Elton john, you could say he could do something better than he did. But you can't insult him, he's got a long successful career with many hit songs that people still laugh and sing along with today. Hell you could say the same with the Beatles and the Stones.
This album is all I wanted for my 13th birthday and I played the hell out of it went I got it! I still have it, even though I don't even have a turntable anymore.
I got to see Elton last year in concert, was so much better than I could have imagined, I was just blown away by his arrangements, quality of musicians in his band and the shear talent honed by 43 years of performing. His voice is a bit lower now but still very good and the show was amazing!!
Has there ever been a better sequence in an album than Funeral for a Friend. Love Lies Bleeding, Candle in the Wind, Bennie and the Jets, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road? All greater tracks than most artists manage in a whole career
some of Eltons earlier hits like "Crocodile Rock" and "Daniel"..yea they were ok but when "Bennie and the Jets" hit it big in the spring of 1974....WHOA!!!....BULLSEYE!!!......That got my attention......and Now I'm a fan!!

Elton certainly captured the early seventies..but, so what ??? what about the eighties and the nineties and so on and so forth, to quote Shakespeare ??? Or ought the 'Bard' to be forgotten by now ??? Perhaps it's time for some MIlton ??
My name is Ben and I have loved this amazing song since it's inception back in the 70's - Elton John is one of the greatest creators of sound that we, as a human race, could have ever imagined.....
Only ever a 'b' side in Britain, scandalous waste, would have made No1. Instead we had to suffer 'Candle In The Fucking Wind' !!! Ah well. Pax to all from 'SoulBoy' Smith.Xxx.
to me, billy joel songs get tired and overplayed, same with fleetwood mac,and the eagles... but elton john songs I can listen to countless times and love it every time.
I've heard this song 100's of times, still love it. he is magic.
One of the first songs I heard from this "new artist" back in the day. Everybody was asking what it meant, but who cared?? "Where we fight our parents out in the streets to find who's right and who's wrong..."
@kackod101 Elton wrote this as a homage to "Glam Rock," a style defined by outrageous costumes that was popular in the early '70s, especially in the UK. Artists like David Bowie and Gary Glitter got into the act. The falsetto vocal is Elton trying to sound like Frankie Valli. He was a fan of Frankie Valli And The 4 Seasons growing up, and went to at least one of their concerts when he was young.
@OrionDenali That would be Bernie writing the song.... and you are forgetting Queen. His roots are firm in soul, such as performing with Patti LaBelle back in the day and his confessed mentor is Leon Russell. He came to America to break through, which is somewhat unusual. He got away from his roots and into the whole glitz and glamour of the music industry at the time. He seems to be coming full circle however as evidenced in the latest collaboration with Leon. I think its great.
weird how i always was a big elton john fan back in the 70's but i always hated the song and never could figure why. I then recently heard that a lot of black people love this song. I find that weirder than my not liking this song.

I don't know why, but whenever I hear this song, I feel so happy :)
There's something about the piano, the drums, and guitar in sync to the beat that makes the song so jaunty and chill.... ~_~
This song is immortal!

weird how i always was a big elton john fan back in the 70's but i always hated the song and never could figure why. I then recently heard that a lot of black people love this song. I find that weirder than my not liking this song.
