Conor, this is great...your website is great, lot's of information, stuff to try out and learn. I will be directing my own students to check out your website. Thank you very very much! Drumkitch
Not sure if its a click you set but from about min 1 to the end you left out the hi-hat. To me that was one of the elements that made Philly Joe Jones such a great drummer. During his solos his hi hat never let the listener lose the form of tempo. Besides that, excellent feel and attention to detail.
wow. First and last of the "4"s couldn't even tell you had the recording playing, right on!! what happen to the high hit clicks during the chorus? Overall, the fact that I couldn't tell you had audio on the first and last four....amazing
Hi. Wonderful job! I was wondering why you chose to put the occasional RLL in the triplets in the last three lines. Is that how you were hearing them, or did you just want to stick it that way?
Thanks so much! Ordering your reading and clave books Monday from Steve Weiss. These vids and pdf's are a real service! I suggest u transcribing "Grease Piece" from the Jody Grind: Horace Silver: or maybe I will. It's a great solo
Thanks az993km. Yes it's groups of 6. However the bas drum is the key. It's in groups of 3 8th notes (dotted quarters) starting on "1+". The pattern repeats every 3 bars, so the 4th bar is the same as the first. I suggest you practice the bass drum alone with the hi-hats on 2+4 to hear the polyrhythm, then add the hands. On the break Philly plays the hi hats and bass drum in unison.
Thanks for this wonderful lesson! I'm studying it and I find that 3rd fill is very challanging. Is there a way to "play" it rather than counting it? I find it very hard to feel when the 1 is coming again. I guess the reason is that the fill is divided in phrases of groups of 6 sixteenth notes, which makes it polirhythmic with respect to the underlying melody. Is that correct?
i studied with Philly Joe in the 70s. he took me thru the Charles Wilcoxen swing solos book( still in print). many of his solos have bits and pieces of that stuff in them. hLondon59
You're sounding great here! I've never seen a drummer lay out and go through the 4's like this--crystal clear conceptually. Very helpful to see. You're the man! Rick P.
You nailed it ! Philly Joe Jones, the definition of hardbop drums. When I'll have sufficient rudimental technique it's gon be the first drum solo I'll transcribe... til then, back to Stick Control heheh
Really impressive!! I need to practice more! Practice alot more..
