Oh and I grew up in Cincinnati 35 years on the west side things were ok for most when the housing projects were still open for business.

Your pictures of lynchings are no surprise to me. This is the behaviour of colonists - WILD WHITE PEOPLE. This is their so-called civilisation. Their descendants will be punished for these crimes, it has already been written down. There will be no escape for any of them.
I know what you mean. I still am fascinated that people would bring their children to see this, though.
It wasn't only the south! I live in Ohio (I know, not too far from the south...) and there were 26 documented lynching preformed here. 1 even in the county I'm currently living in!
I`m surprised that even that number was documented.
I know during the reconstruction period and after the 2 world wars when 'negro' soldiers coming back from the wars had seen the world and came back to parts of US with 'uppidity ideas' there was a huge growth in lynching.
There is nothing ignorant about my comment... PandyFackleresque. Your ignorance lies in NOT knowing how important black people are to the Greatest Being in existence.
BTW kudos to you for your correct spelling of the word colours. Very unusual for someone from the US.
Greatest Being? I don't know what that is but it sounds like some sort of divine being or plan. So, I'll go ahead and tell you ahead of time that I don't believe in anything divine.
Now go ahead and explain and you so apparently wanted me to ask.
What supreme being? I don't know if you are actually this retarded or not, but since the whole video was about how awful and horrible the crime of lynching is, I think it's safe to say Pandy knows the value of black people IN REALITY (not your fairy tale); that is, they are equal to every other group/color of people.
Also, since we're talking about the descendants of criminals, I suppose the descendants of Africans who sold rival tribes to Europeans will be punished too?
I`m not an american but a brit but i thought ohio was one of those liberal progressive states of the time not like Alabama or Mississipi so its a bit of a shock to hear about it there but not as much a shock as you knowing it happening in yr own town.
It is, but you need to understand that no one ever was punished for slavery and for what happened pre-Civil Rights, that's why it is so hard for Blacks to move on
@PandyFackleresque I commend u sooooo much! This video made me cry not just because i am black ( cause i would of cried if it was any other race) but because of the cruel humans are. I was scared to come to Cincinnati for school just because i heard about that riot even though it was 10 years ago. And its sad to say but you can sometime feel the hate from people in Cincinnati coming from both blacks and white. But just wanted to say stay positive!
I think it's disgusting. Cruel death at the hands of another human being is never called for. What makes me even more sad is that these photos feature some of our generations grandfathers and even great-grandfathers acting out of pure ignorance. They stand there looking smug, like they did our race a great favor.
Sometimes I think there's not enough guilt in the world for me to feel appropriately what was done here.
I don't understand why like... there is such a huge black/white divide and not a Japanese/white divide or Chinese/white divide. Or at least not on the same level... the white population did horrible shit to pretty much all races, but the black/white divide seems to be the biggest.
I don't think we Americans need to feel as if we are alone with this history.
All we need to do is look to Turkish treatment of the Armenians, look to the Bosnian Serb treatment of the Bosnian Muslims, look to the Hutu's treatment of the Tutsis in Rwanda.
Brutality to the "other" is a fact of human existence and it will persist for the ages. The goal is to minimize this activity with education, morality and familiarity.
Let's not forget that some whites in the US were lynched too!
I think its awful, You cant directly blame whites for everything but i mean what can you say is that you can see why there is tension. it does go both ways if your a white kid from the burbs or country and you go into a super black part of town bad shit can happen, yet I have white friends who live in OTR. and the worst thing thats happend to them so far is getting their radio stolen out of an unlocked car. I think americans should think more about what they are doing to arabs via nationalism
And also, what I feel and think about the history of America is pride for the good things we've done and also intense shame. I am disgusted about the fact that for a time our nation was built on slavery and the torture of another race. However, I do not let that reflect how I feel today.
firstly great video yet again! But is it just me or are 99% of people in this world completely stupid and self centred who use things like religion as excuses to turn some of the best parts of humanity against out selves. Everyone has the right to do what they want and think and feel the way the want within rules of a society, but your still a free person etc. But the only way to stop this is through free open and serious + interesting + relevant education and most of all some F*'in common sense
I read about the "afro-centric" school already. Pissed me off. My problem with immigration is not because of race or language, it's because overpopulation is going to be a big problem very soon and the rest of the world needs to deal with it rather than sending people over here.
The problem on my side is usually from East Indians. Half my high school was East Indian, they kept to themselves and many of them hated white people. We have huge East Indian gangs killing each other over here as well.
Seriouslymatsteele: We have not received in the US enough people to have any effect on overpopulation in any country. Neither has Canada. Immigration is fueled by economics.
Fact is that the overpopulated countries are the ones who's citizens are immigrating to Canada. Their own countries are shit and that's partly because they're so packed. Canada is perfectly able to maintain it's numbers and it's economy without any immigration at all.
seriously: But not without standing on the backs of the countries for which we rely on cheap labor and resources. To shut the borders of a nation is not only not practicable, it puts the lie to any talk about egalitarianism.
That is really graphic stuff. Reminds me of going to the Holocaust museum in DC, ever been?
Anyway, I've always agreed with the premise of teaching history to prevent it's recurrence. It a shame that so much of it showcases the darkest part of our nature, it really makes us look like monsters. But it's good to know that we are capable of being that way. Hopefully it means we'll keep an eye on each other.
England - slavery specifically here was outlawed in 1772, and finally abolished throughout the British Empire in 1833. so a little over 30 years before America. Yay.
Of course slavery has existed everywhere, and has been perpetrated against every race. This is so shocking to us, I guess, because its relatively not that long ago.
I might do a response, specifically about the painter J.M.W Turner.
Interestingly the British did not outlaw the International Slave Trade on its ships until 1807 and the US did it as soon as the constitution permitted it in 1808 (Article II section 9) so the International Slave Trade was abolished all of 9 months before the US did it.
@LatumWay - like the rewriting of history by Hollywood so that an American Film Star can be the hero / heroine in a historical event that didn't involve them.
Scotland - That seems like another world to me, although more because I was born into a more accepting age than anything geographical. What struck me more than anything was the apathy or even pleasure displayed by the crowds and something about that makes it more realistic (and by that, more disturbing).
That is horrendous. I could not see such a thing as possible. I would go apeshit if i saw people doing this. I wouldn't be stupid though, i'd probably go get a gun and make a true accounting of the situation. I wouldn't shoot anyone, but i'd let them know, it isn't happening on my watch.
yes and no. I think how you are raised is a factor, but who you are is another one. we know there are people raised by racists who are not racist. but of course, you are right, i don't actually know what i'd do in that kind of situation.
I live in Europe and we have done more than our fair share of racist attacks and genocide.
I think race is the elephant in the room of American political and cultural history - it is a fault-line down the American society and it is definitely something that Americans need to face - just like the British have to face their class divide and Germans their expert divide.
What I find interesting is the images of spectators - the people laughing and smiling and having no shame.
I agree. It's been confronted before but I think people just kind of let it go after a while and hoped it would take care of itself. People obviously still feel opressed and nobody seems to want to talk about it openly anymore. Since we don't have MLKs and Malcolm Xs making people confront it, it's hard to get people to listen.
@PandyFackleresque - and I think racism has a terrible habit of sneaking into the conversation if it is pushed under the carpet by a society - the treatment and language used about Barack Obama from some quarters is due, I think, to the racist thinking that black people should not be uppity and that white people should rule. That cannot be explicitly said in polite conversation so it comes out in other ways - birthers etc.
Usually I try to leace a logical or well-reasoned response, but honestly, this just breaks my heart. It's not just about America either--violent prejudice has been going on for thousands of years everywhere in the world. I can't imagine being one of those victims. I can't imagine doing that to another person and believing in it. But somewhere that violence is inside myself and everyone else, and that's something we have face both as a community and as individuals.
California- I think we need to talk about race. And I don't mean how most politicians mean- I mean we need to be open about our feelings about race in public and not give a shit. Until we can speak to each other, we can't move on.
I completely disagree. I think we need to educate people about the history of oppression and racism in our society. I think we need to learn about privilege and teach people about non-western cultures and races and civilizations in ways that aren't dismissive.
The problem is, that people are so ignorant about race and privilege, that discussing race with them is equivalent to discussing theoretical mathematics with a kindergartner. Good effort, but entirely unproductive.
There is and was a problem in Canada, where I live, with racism, but I'm pretty sure that there has never been a problem such as that. The imagery of those hanging is disturbing for sure, but even more disturbing is the blank looks on the faces of the people watching. They seem to have no empathy. They seem to have no humanity.
Yes. The non-Whites HATE White people in Canada. So much racial tension in the cities with usually Asians and Blacks, and in smaller regions with Natives who have a strong hatred of White people.
@baeritukaez There certainly is racism against all races including white in Canada, but I don't know if it's as strong as what your comment made it out to be.
The "employment equity" laws in Canada have to change. Also the little pockets of culture need to integrate into the whole. No more China town or little India. That separation is a huge part of the problem.
Not that bad? Tell that to the people living in Caledonia Ontario dealing with land claims, or to the new students at the all black self-segregated schools in the GTA, or to the countless victims of Jamaican gun violence in Toronto and especially North York. Racial tensions are, well, tense.
Equity laws and immigration laws much change in this nation if they want to prevent racism on a larger scale, which will otherwise develop into race riots one day if current trends persist.
I've gotta admit, all those examples you gave, I've never heard of them. Blame the media or blame me. I'm from BC and haven't seen anything quite so bad as what you've mentioned. Segregated schools, seriously? That's retarded. Wow.
1 in 5 Canadians were born outside of Canada, and 80 percent of them speak one of the Chinese languages. Expect Asian self-segregation on your side of this land soon.

Racism comes in many colours. "Their descendents will be punished"? What an ignorant thing to say.

Disgusting, shocking but strangely mesmerizing.
What is also interesting is that women and children were there enjoying the bloodlust which proves it was nothing unusual.
The arbitary nature and absurdity of the reasons people were lynched in the South is also fascinating.
Its important we understand that all societies are capable of this type of violence and guard against it.

You should do that. I'm interested to get as much info out there as possible

Interestingly the British did not outlaw the International Slave Trade on its ships until 1807 and the US did it as soon as the constitution permitted it in 1808 (Article II section 9) so the International Slave Trade was abolished all of 9 months before the US did it.

I like my version better. May not be true, but it makes be feel better.
Its the american way! =cough=

@LatumWay - like the rewriting of history by Hollywood so that an American Film Star can be the hero / heroine in a historical event that didn't involve them.
U-571 being one of the infamous examples.

Scotland - That seems like another world to me, although more because I was born into a more accepting age than anything geographical. What struck me more than anything was the apathy or even pleasure displayed by the crowds and something about that makes it more realistic (and by that, more disturbing).

I seem to remember that Glasgow Green, the now beautiful park, was once the hot spot to hang "criminals" during the days of the Bloody Code.
Unfortunately, most countries aren't so different from each other in the aspect of discrimination.
I agree, though. It's hard to wrap your head around it these days. As it should be.
PandyFackleresque 2 years ago
That is horrendous. I could not see such a thing as possible. I would go apeshit if i saw people doing this. I wouldn't be stupid though, i'd probably go get a gun and make a true accounting of the situation. I wouldn't shoot anyone, but i'd let them know, it isn't happening on my watch.
rageoftyrael 2 years ago
It's hard to say what you would do. I've thought about this too and its really easy to say that while living within this era.
PandyFackleresque 2 years ago

What I find interesting is the images of spectators - the people laughing and smiling and having no shame.
johncrwarner 2 years ago

It is scary to think that. But we know now that we need to do everything in our power not to repeat our history.
PandyFackleresque 2 years ago
California- I think we need to talk about race. And I don't mean how most politicians mean- I mean we need to be open about our feelings about race in public and not give a shit. Until we can speak to each other, we can't move on.
TheCelticNinja 2 years ago
Agreed. But people get too emotional (sometimes rightly so) and it's hard to listen or convey messages when that happens.
PandyFackleresque 2 years ago
And then there's those racist assholes who ruin it.
/sigh
I think realistically, educating one's self and becoming more accepting is the best one person can do.
TheCelticNinja 2 years ago
I completely disagree. I think we need to educate people about the history of oppression and racism in our society. I think we need to learn about privilege and teach people about non-western cultures and races and civilizations in ways that aren't dismissive.
The problem is, that people are so ignorant about race and privilege, that discussing race with them is equivalent to discussing theoretical mathematics with a kindergartner. Good effort, but entirely unproductive.
DarknessWhispers 2 years ago
...But I agree with that...?
lol

Lol, then perhaps I misunderstood what you meant.

There is and was a problem in Canada, where I live, with racism, but I'm pretty sure that there has never been a problem such as that. The imagery of those hanging is disturbing for sure, but even more disturbing is the blank looks on the faces of the people watching. They seem to have no empathy. They seem to have no humanity.
seriouslymatsteele 2 years ago
That's what kept me up last night. It's really hard to let those faces go.
I'm not familiar with racism in Canada. Is it something that's still happening?
PandyFackleresque 2 years ago
Yes. The non-Whites HATE White people in Canada. So much racial tension in the cities with usually Asians and Blacks, and in smaller regions with Natives who have a strong hatred of White people.
baeritukaez 2 years ago
@baeritukaez There certainly is racism against all races including white in Canada, but I don't know if it's as strong as what your comment made it out to be.
The "employment equity" laws in Canada have to change. Also the little pockets of culture need to integrate into the whole. No more China town or little India. That separation is a huge part of the problem.
seriouslymatsteele 2 years ago
Not that bad? Tell that to the people living in Caledonia Ontario dealing with land claims, or to the new students at the all black self-segregated schools in the GTA, or to the countless victims of Jamaican gun violence in Toronto and especially North York. Racial tensions are, well, tense.
Equity laws and immigration laws much change in this nation if they want to prevent racism on a larger scale, which will otherwise develop into race riots one day if current trends persist.
baeritukaez 2 years ago
I've gotta admit, all those examples you gave, I've never heard of them. Blame the media or blame me. I'm from BC and haven't seen anything quite so bad as what you've mentioned. Segregated schools, seriously? That's retarded. Wow.
seriouslymatsteele 2 years ago
Google:
Grand River land dispute
Toronto's Gun Crime: The Jamaican Connection
Board okays black-focused school
1 in 5 Canadians were born outside of Canada, and 80 percent of them speak one of the Chinese languages. Expect Asian self-segregation on your side of this land soon.
