The thing is, the GOP really doesn't have to stop looking for the next Reagan. Reagan was a principled, and more importantly in the media age, articulate Conservative. Rick Perry would actually be the most conservative president since Calvin Coolige. There is nothing wrong with looking for a leader like Reagan. However, it is also important 2 remember that Reagan was a ONCE IN A CENTURY LEADER. Christie has his fire, Perry his values, and Newt his agenda.Obama's defeat is the #1 goal.Semper Fi.
Barack Obama will b re-elected President of the United States on Novemeber 6, 2012 and it will be just as big as his victory in 2008.. He might lose Virginia, Indiana & North Carolina, but he'll hold on to all the other states he won in 2008 and might even pull a swing state like Missouri or might even take Arizona which is only in the leaning Republican category.
@JimmyShoes1973 I disagree. He will certainly lose Virginia (see Jim Webb jumping ship) and North Carolina. If the economy doesn't improve, he may have a tough time holding onto Pennsylvania. In the end, it will come down to Florida and Ohio. Ohio is usually the linchpin for Republicans. If the GOP wins Ohio, they win the presidency. If not, they lose.
@Ninjalectual What's a failure? Cost overruns? It's government. Considering how extensively it's been used in combat and we've never lost one in combat - I think you may want to rethink your dumb comment.

Reagan did excellent. He made some speaking faults but easily destroyed Carter. The Misery Index part was my favorite. Carter is a hypocritical sore loser. He recently said that the only reason he lost was b/c of independent candidate Anderson who was a Republican. Give me a break. He lost almost every state.
@Willredd94 You mean aside from the fact that Carter gave mostly specific answers to questions while Reagan was vague, not policy oriented and unspecific? While Reagan certainly inspired more confidence than Carter and won the election by a handy margin, it's churlish in the extreme imo to pretend that Carter didn't easily win the debate.
@XJuanwikoX Hello! Obama is the exact opposite of Reagan. He wants to do what Reagan just mentioned as being dangerous. Government living too well! Crazy! Anyone else in 2012!
the obama administration is the carter administration part 2. the economic and foreign problems then are the same now. inflation, high gas prices, high unemployment, unrest in the middle east, the overthrow of a foreign leader(egypt, obama)(iran, carter). we need a president like regan again to get out of the issues we have now.
At aboput 40 mins Reagon's response to the question concerning "backing dictators who are friendly to the United States" is identical to RFK's response to the same question 10 years earlier. They did an international news program together and were both asked about it. Reagon used RFK's answer and then backed Iraq, sold guns to Iran, and backed the Contras (would sold us coke in the 80s). Who is the hypocritical one?
@mndesouza12 You mean aside from Filmore, Buchannon and Pierce? Andrew Jackson, Gerald Ford, Warren G Harding, George W Bush , William Henry Harrison and John Tyler? Arguably better than Wilson and Polk? Learn some history, son.
When the times were hard and the Soviet Union and America were neck and neck for the title of top dog of the world, Reagan stepped in and helped us become the undisputed and uncontested top dog. Now China is catching up with us and everyone thinks America is old news. Where is the next Ronald Reagan? We need him now.
Carter was and is a good man. But I was a child when he was president, and all we used to hear is that America was on the decline, that the future belonged to the USSR, that the economy would never be good again, etc. Regan came in and rejected all that. He appealed to our greatest ideas and ideals. No, he wasn't perfect: probably not as moral a man as Carter; but he was truely a leader, an optimist, and made a kid like I was in 1980 believe that our best years were in the future.
please someone pass Reagan's comments about how to handle Iran or in our case Egypt today to our current president. We can not have another Iranian Regime in the Middle east. It will be a fatal blow to the american presence in that part of the world and we will havea super power called Iran in the world.
People are seeing the past through rose colored glasses... People don't remember Reagan Fatigue towards the end of his term, Iran Contra, HUD, Wedtech, Inslaw... and also, Bill Clinton actually had high approval pole ratings...
Ronald Reagan helped create the modern 21st century military we have today.
This also benefited future presidents such as in the first Gulf War and even President Clinton (Clinton used the modern military to stop genocide in Europe).
Without this debate Reagan would've lost. He was down by 7 points in the Gallup poll before the debate and in the week following he was up or even in every single poll.
America needs another Reagan, this man did a lot for the american people and it's image around the world. He was a man of action and words. Bush was all action with poorly chosen words and Obama is all words with little to no action. Everything Ronald Reagan did for the world, Bush destroyed and Obama is doing nothing to set it right.
At about 1:34:50 " I did it In California..." Yes you did. It's just to bad that after you left California voted in Jerry Brown. Who in powered the labor unions, which in time slowly undid what you achieved. Oh yeah, and if that wasn't enough Californians decided to give old Brown another chance to finish her off.
Mr. Reagan was 1 of the finest leaders of the world. If only he was US president 4 yrs earlier the world would not be in the mess it is today. He wouldnt have sold freindly Iran to the anti-US Muslim terrorists, there would not be sep 11, the war on terror with the loss of US lives in the Middle East.I am not even talking about the loss of lives in the 8 yr Iran/Iraq war, millions been arrested tortured, executed in Iran & 7 million more Iranians as refugees since carter's1979 revolution in Iran.
Definitely interesting..."Any threat to the stability or security of the Persian Gulf would be a threat to the security of our own country". Anyone hearing that might assume that came from George W. Bush, when this came from the lips of Jimmy Carter at timestamp 10:40. Interestingly enough in 1990 when Saddam Hussain invaded Kuwait, Carter was the lone voice of opposition in that. Interesting how Carter kept referring to the stark differences between Dems and Reps...I think that hurt him.
(34:44) Not sure that, if I were a Democrat, I would remind people of my party's "ancient history in this country"...Southern planter class, slavery, secession…ring any bells?
@awen56 Party history has a lot more to do with the passing down of ideas than simply the name of the party. The Democrats from the mid 1800's are much different from the Democrats of the 1980's which are different from the Democrats of today. The same goes with the Republicans.
@Stormskip I would argue that the Democrats are exactly the same today as they were in the 1800's. The only real difference is they enslave Americans through economic policy instead of physical force. I would agree that the Republicans are different now, I am hoping to God that the Tea party Republicans can grab ahold of teh party and drag them back to the Constitution.
(34:44) Not sure that, if I were a Democrat, I would remind people of my party's "ancient history in this country"...Southern planter class, slavery, secession…ring any bells?
(34:44) Not sure that, if I were a Democrat, I would remind people of my party's "ancient history in this country"...Southern planter class, slavery, secession…ring any bells?
On 8/24/85 President Reagan tells an interviewer that the "reformist administration" of South African president P.W. Botha has made significant progress on the racial front. "They have eliminated the segregation that we once had in our own country," says the President, "the type of thing where hotels and restaurants and places of entertainment and so forth were segregated - that has all been eliminated."
The people who don't fundamentally believe in the "birth right" of Americans will NEVER understand what - or why - Reagan was all about. He wasn't a savior, but he saved a country... almost single-handedly. The RNC wanted GHW Bush as their candidate - just as they wanted Ford as their candidate 4 years prior. They didn't LIKE Reagan, and certainly couldn't contain him. The die-hard liberal will always find fault with Reagan, but he made the "collective" better by reminding us that WE MATTERED.
Inflation is probably the biggest thing that has affected America in the last 40 years. It comes down to vital resources (OIL) and both Reagan and Carter duck the issue here, Carter by being nervous and Reagan by flat out lying, cause he never kept the promises he made here.
I don't think any wall street banker would have told Carter to "Speed it up". Carter had an important message for Americans in his crisis of confidence speech and they did not listen. Sorry, you guys blew it by voting for Reagan. I do agree that he made America appear strong, but alot was compromised for that image.
I find it funny that Carter couldn't pronounce Nuclear and got a pass but Bush was an idiot for the very same reason. Not that I liked Bush but I despise the bias of the media.
Reagan did well in the debate. In 2012 the Republican party will likely shoot for a "new Reagan". The reality is, Carter was put in a tough situation and Reagan ended up raising taxes after lowering them. Reagan was able to speak more optimistically but he really didn't understand what was ahead of him like Carter did.
Not that Carter was the best president, but it is alarming that everybody seems to judge these debates and campaigns on how depressing or how upbeat the candidate seems. I mean Reagan was an ACTOR. That doesn't mean he was automatically qualified.
Personality matters, but people need to look at policy much closer.
Carter was one hell of an eloquent talker (more than Obummer). I would feel more comfortable to have Carter as president than the clueless moron we have in the WH.
@americanvaluesonline no one will save us there will never be another reagan the country is doomed and so are we all there will never be another reagan because morals and ethics have been replaced by a sense of entitlement in this country too many people think someone owes them a living when in all reality no one owes you a damned thing except what you work and save for this is what is ruining this country
@BUCK3Y34991 Nixon was a good president, unfortunately his lack of public appeal, as well as the events of the Watergate Scandal (In which his actual level of involvement is still in question) would sink him as a politician. However, he still had the sense to behave properly and resign, which is something Clinton never had the balls to do.
@rightwingrocks At some point you will have to consider Washington and Lincoln, et al. Are you prepared to stand behind your opinion that Reagan was the greatest ever?
@kiminokami They were all great and for different reasons. Washington's greatness came more from humility and a lack of desire for power. Lincoln's from a desire to preserve this nation and to finally conclude the task which the Founders had begun: Making all men truly equal. Reagan was great because he demonstrated that, despite what many of the intellectual class would have us believe from their teachings since the turn of the 20th century, government is not the answer to people's problems.
At 36:17 Carter looked like he'd just received a death sentence. For all intents and purposes, as then Candidate Reagan stated, Carter HAD no policy for dealing with international crisis.
Listen up folks! Do you hear Reagan? That is what a President should sound like. He is in my top 3 lists of the greatest presidents in the history of this great nation. No apologies would ever come from the lips of this man.
@sciencemunk Why was Bush Sr. a mistake? He was a WWII vet (the youngest navy pilot ever at the time),an international business man, former U.N. Ambasador, Head of U.S liason to China, and former head of the CIA. He is probably the most qualified VP in History. He was a good pres too. He only lost to Clinton because Ross Perot ran. Clinton only got 43 % of the popular vote.
I honestly felt sorry for Mr. Carter while I watched this debate. I don't wish to shame him, but I do feel that he may have been the wrong man for the job. It almost seemed as if Mr. Reagan had been the incumbent president, and Mr. Carter was the challenger, with Mr. Reagan's knowledge and conviction of his own policies.
See here they are worried about a 60 billion dollar budget deficit. Here in 2010, we're swiping our credit card without any feeling of remorse. Some 2 trillion (24X) in NEW spending in one year. Keep in mind each fiscal year, we have about 3 trillion allotted to the budget. Anything outside of that is pure debt. Get ready for higher taxes
Im a Democrat and wasn't alive during the Reagan years, i have talks with a lot of my relatives saying he wasnt a good president and that may be true. But one thing i'll give him while watching his speeches is he was very confident when speaking which gives the people confidence, Carter sounded very timid when he spoke.
@EdwardP88 wasn't a good president? He saved this country. we were floundering in the depths ussr was taking it to us, reagan turned the country around. He turned the country around by restoring dignity to government, boosting business, lowered the unemployment rate, lowered taxes, and helped americans believe in themselves again. Oh and he broke the back of the USSR. his charisma told people they could trust the government after 12 years of terrible president and policies (sound familiar?)
Amazing how much history repeats itself in terms of the issues and how similar the talking points for both parties remain as they were 32 years ago.

Willredd94 8 months ago
@Willredd94 You mean aside from the fact that Carter gave mostly specific answers to questions while Reagan was vague, not policy oriented and unspecific? While Reagan certainly inspired more confidence than Carter and won the election by a handy margin, it's churlish in the extreme imo to pretend that Carter didn't easily win the debate.

the obama administration is the carter administration part 2. the economic and foreign problems then are the same now. inflation, high gas prices, high unemployment, unrest in the middle east, the overthrow of a foreign leader(egypt, obama)(iran, carter). we need a president like regan again to get out of the issues we have now.

Carter was and is a good man. But I was a child when he was president, and all we used to hear is that America was on the decline, that the future belonged to the USSR, that the economy would never be good again, etc. Regan came in and rejected all that. He appealed to our greatest ideas and ideals. No, he wasn't perfect: probably not as moral a man as Carter; but he was truely a leader, an optimist, and made a kid like I was in 1980 believe that our best years were in the future.

Interesting how Carter kept referring to the stark differences between Dems and Reps...I think that hurt him.

awen56 1 year ago
@awen56 Party history has a lot more to do with the passing down of ideas than simply the name of the party. The Democrats from the mid 1800's are much different from the Democrats of the 1980's which are different from the Democrats of today. The same goes with the Republicans.
Stormskip 1 year ago
@Stormskip I would argue that the Democrats are exactly the same today as they were in the 1800's. The only real difference is they enslave Americans through economic policy instead of physical force. I would agree that the Republicans are different now, I am hoping to God that the Tea party Republicans can grab ahold of teh party and drag them back to the Constitution.

BBCater 1 year ago
Inflation is probably the biggest thing that has affected America in the last 40 years. It comes down to vital resources (OIL) and both Reagan and Carter duck the issue here, Carter by being nervous and Reagan by flat out lying, cause he never kept the promises he made here.
Snailbarf 1 year ago
I don't think any wall street banker would have told Carter to "Speed it up". Carter had an important message for Americans in his crisis of confidence speech and they did not listen. Sorry, you guys blew it by voting for Reagan. I do agree that he made America appear strong, but alot was compromised for that image.

falquest 1 year ago 4
Reagan did well in the debate. In 2012 the Republican party will likely shoot for a "new Reagan". The reality is, Carter was put in a tough situation and Reagan ended up raising taxes after lowering them. Reagan was able to speak more optimistically but he really didn't understand what was ahead of him like Carter did.
muabdeeb 1 year ago
Not that Carter was the best president, but it is alarming that everybody seems to judge these debates and campaigns on how depressing or how upbeat the candidate seems. I mean Reagan was an ACTOR. That doesn't mean he was automatically qualified.
Personality matters, but people need to look at policy much closer.

Are you prepared to stand behind your opinion that Reagan was the greatest ever?
kiminokami 1 year ago
@kiminokami They were all great and for different reasons. Washington's greatness came more from humility and a lack of desire for power. Lincoln's from a desire to preserve this nation and to finally conclude the task which the Founders had begun: Making all men truly equal. Reagan was great because he demonstrated that, despite what many of the intellectual class would have us believe from their teachings since the turn of the 20th century, government is not the answer to people's problems.

Keep in mind each fiscal year, we have about 3 trillion allotted to the budget. Anything outside of that is pure debt. Get ready for higher taxes
