For a minute, at 6:45, I was confused as to what kind of Car lou owns. I thought what the hell, this is America right, so why is he driving a GAZ Chaika, which is a communist Russian car. Then I went on google and found out that Lou's car is a last of the line Packard, 1955 model, that was their last one before going bust. Ironically GAZ in Russia based their Chaika on the 55 Packard, which explains why the cars look so similar.
I don't know why her mom (Cher) wouldn't give her a hug when she got back from funning away! I mean, I understand she was hurt and made at her but if she was my child ALL I'd wanna do is give her a hug!
This movie was shot in 1990 and it's set in 1963. I can't find the interview with Barbara Walters about discotheques (4:15). Can anyone else? Just curious. This movie isn't bad. I can't believe I've never heard of it.... "a real life father actually living in the same house as his wife and kids" "this is like television" a lot of the dialog is great social commentary.
@jesusramirez000 ..she didn't purposely go live there..what happened was that her mom car (which she stole) broke down and it broke down in front of that family's home..charlotte has a huge imagination for a 15 y/o and she probably imagined herself apart of those strange people's family. Also it was probably somehing she desired for..meaning a normal nuclear family: mom, dad and two happy kids..lol!
@jesusramirez000 ..and no that wasn't her dad house..she never knew who her dad were. she car just broke down in front of those people home and she kind of desired that type of family .
My word, she is the most retarded person I have ever seen in my life. Pregnant, going to somebody's house and making up stories about yourself and pregnant? She needs help.
I think, Mrs. Flax and Charlotte both are very eccentric characters. To have a mother who has one boyfriend after another is not a very reliable character...especially for a teenage daughter. Otherwise Charlotte is overreacting too. Being religious does not mean to avoid partnership.
This movie happens in 1963 and 1964, just before the revolution years, the years of the hippies, but there you can feel it coming up, the rebellion starting and everything.
Winona's has trouble playing iconic roles in her 30s/40s... I predict she will turn into a phenomenal and eccentric character actress like the legendary Ruth Gordon - she'll be back post 50 with all the best roles!
I have a daughter just like that: cried, but wouldn't talk - wouldn't tell! 20 years later she says they were beating her up at school! Still don't know if she was, inventing, exaggerating, lying about that - or it really was happening?
@snufkinshat ..yes so true but i also liked her in the films "Lucas" and "Welcome home Roxy CarMicheal"..those were great films she did as a teen also!!!
Since Mrs. Flax claimed the family is Jewish and Jews don't eat pig meat, Charlotte breakfasting with that "perfect" family may be the first time Charlotte has ever eatten pig (unless she's been sneaking pig meat in the past). Yeah, I know, a strange thought but I couldn't help noticing. ^_~
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Mrs Flax said they were jewish but didn't say anything asbouyt not eating pig meat. At one point in the movie she was telling Lou how the niught she ran away from home she was standing in the kitchen with a cigarette in one hand and ham sandwich in the other. Also I'm pretty sure Charlotte was making ham and cheese sandwiches to take on her date with Joe.
She said she was "Holding a cigarette in one hand and a ham sandwich in the other". The reason she would be holding a HAM sandwich would be to piss off her Jewish parents. As for Charlotte, she believes in Christianity and is making "Big" sandwiches for Joey to "eat with both hands".
its called mermaids because the whole movie is sort of centered around water and the sea. There are so many nuances in this movie about it. I think the girls sort of represent mermaids. They swim and float from town to town, life to life. And then there are the not so subtle reasonings for the title. The youngest daughter loving to swim, the room looking like under water, when they are all in the tub when Mrs. Flax is dressed like a mermaid, etc.
and from an orignal press release about the film the author said she chose the title MERMAIDS "because of the dual child/woman natures of Mrs Flax and Charlotte. Even down-to-earth Kate, with her love of swimming, has a streak of mermaid. Mrs Flax is like a mermaid. She feels unsafe falling in love with the men she dates, preferring instead to skim the surface of life. To risk total immersion could mean losing her identity and freedom and inviting heartache.
As for Charlotte", the author adds, "she resembles a mermaid poised on the shore, waiting to jump in, unsure whether she'll sink or swim."
Offers Richard Benjamin, "The people in this film don't fit in any category exactly. Charlotte is half girl, half woman. Kate is kind of half girl, half 'fish'. They're in the water out of the water -- mermaids, looking for a place to be. What it means", the director concludes, "is you can't put everybody into a category."
I can't tell you how many times I've seen this movie and yet, I only just noticed the father going out to look at Charlotte's car and write down her plate numbers.
she is sooo weird when she just helps herself into their home :I
