I get over to NY every so often as my family live in Brooklyn and even though this song is 30+ years old it really does sum the place up to people over here in England.
@UlikTheTroll The late 70's in NYC was fun when I reflect back upon it now the funny thing is that those times were more liberal then they are now. But of course nothing never stays the same. NYC today has been so Disneyfied that it's become a city for the rich. I have such fond memories of that era in terms of the culture, fashions and music. It during those times it was not unusual to see blacks, whites, latinos and gay people partying and dancing under one roof.
Oh now see many don't even know about this! lol what you know about that! Great song. I used to sing this everyday when it first came out! I hope you don't get tired of me on your page! hahahaha I love it!
In Brooklyn, we would all call each other (at our houses...pre-cell phone days...), and get the word out..."Get together at - - - - - house....", We'd all put on our "threads", fix our hair...cheap cologne on...(checked)....latest dance-steps practiced...(checked)..."Will that pretty girl be there?"...(checked)...chip in for the potato chips...soda...pretzels...everyone would bring their records...lets dance until dawn...then go for breakfast at the dinner!
Fck I would wanna it last forever. This old style, music, touching films with the relations like in Back to Future, Beverly Hills Cop))) all this hair style, cloth, actions.
I am serious! People were more pure, even in USSR, believe me!
its amazing how far weve come a 12 inch vinyl to a few little dots and dashes on a hard drive..I ve got a see throgh vinyl shaped like empire state bldg
I heard this on something on T.V. the other day...so I looked it up here. It didn't take long for me to be fully engrossed in many of your postings. I am one of the few that loves disco music. I do not understand why there are so many haters. Here was an era when people dressed up to go out and couples actually touched eachother while they danced...in a good way...LOL. Thanks...I haven't heard many of these songs for years. The Frankie Valli cut is pure enjoyment...nice turntable.
CAN'T DESCRIBE MY FEEEEELINGS!!!!!! WHAT A SOUND, WHAT ARE THE VOICES - it is very DELICATE!!!
IT IS MORE THAN A SONG - IT IS LIFE ITSELF!!!
ONE SHOULD HAVE SMTH INSIDE TO UNDERSTAND ALL THE BACKGROUND!!!!
Sorry for my capslock - just overwhelmed with feelings. I am myself Russian - but understand negro's spiritualls and soul of disco-garage-funky house music!!!!
@Djcole10 Thanks, it's a Canadian pressing in minty condition. I have the white label US promo too, but it wasn't handy when I decided to upload the track. Never saw the Mexican issue, I'm a sucker for colored vinyl.
In late 1977, this song flew up the charts and made a big splash in Europe also. Long before Alicia Keys sung about the glories of New York, this group, made up of 2 sisters of Virgin Islands parentage, busted out with this hot tune. The sisters reside back home as I type. Here's Odyssey with, "Native New Yorker."
I have this song, but it was from the LP "Magic Music" on the K-Tel label, but it does contain a badly 2:23 version of that song. Thank you, K-Tel for editing the music out. The only thing which was missing was the bridge and the last verse. I can't stand it! I posted a video of that, but it ruined my day. K-Tel is already dead by now, this has been going nuts since "Magic Music" was released.
If you are a NEW YORKER... this tune hits home... you may have a friend or relative who feels this trax was written/sang for them.. NEW YORK has a way of molding you into a very special individual strong...& dont take $hit from anyone... BALANCE...this trax carries such a NEW YORK STATE OF MIND...Thanks Slayd5k for such a SMOKIN CLASSIC!
Great memories. Good recording, too. You always manage to achieve a good S/N ratio which is gratifying. Thanks!

My moms used to have this on 45. It would've been best if she had it on 12" instead.

But this was live and not a survival!!
People have become much more agпressive and alienated (at least in Moscow).
But it was more kind and intelligent!

As a Native New Yorker, I must say that it is a changed city but still MINE!!! Love it! Thanx.
