From what I read recently, the sketch came too close to an election so was removed. It seems BBC Worldwide made the mistake of not checking what they were sending to America and various uncut episodes were broadcast. This wasn't the first time they had made such a mistake thankfully. In the early days of VHS they would just grab whatever was close to hand, often first edits, a lot of people think that the episodes on the Young Ones DVDs are edits becasue of this but they are as broadcast
What a treat! I have been a Python fan since they first started airing on KQED in S.F. when I was a kid. This was like finding a Cracker Jack surprise! Thanks for the upload.
Curious. I have the entire series on DVD, and I've never seen this sketch before at all. Although I have seen the Book at Bedtime episode. I wonder how many more sketches I'm missing.
I heard of this before but never actually saw it, or thought to look it up. Thanks for the post! I wonder why it was taken from the original episode...
This scene is fucking brilliant. Not too long ago I was still dreaming of seeing it after hearing about it being one of those lost gems in the Python canon. Completely brilliant, all the words that the minister is saying are meaningless as it all a choreographed speech. Political satire kicks ass!
Thank you so very, very, very much for posting this. I have read the script for this from the "All the Words" books, but it just doesn't translate well without seeing it. I had assumed I'd never get the chance to see it. Thanks again!
Oh! Is that phone number the one in the original sketch? I Googled it, and it was for this sushi resteraunt in Buffalo, NY? Is that just a strange coincidence? Or what...?
No; the only surviving copy came from a TV station that added its phone number. Apparently this call for support did not save the station because, as you just found out, it is now a sushi restaurant.
in acapulco 1934 a laaf was beaten up by a gang of thugs. out of self defense he decided to set the thugs on fire. as us, the human race, we must fight back for the innocent thugs and set all the laafs on fire. If you do not do this, all the laafs will turn against us and set all you non-firesetters on fire. be warned.
A direct copy of this youtube file is on the dvd. It's laziness on behalf of the dvd. Even though the original owner of the tape, which is by the way NOT the uploader, who only has this copy, will not part with it, the bbc have an immaculate b/w film recording of the sketch. all thats needed is to recombine the colour signal, with the b/w image, to have the sketch again in broadcast quality, without any of the writing either. sheer laziness on behalf of sony/the bbc.
Two volume set in paperback entitled "Monty Python All the Words".

Ironically, this is how most party political broadcasts will most likely be in the near future.

Anyone know where I can find a transcript of this scene? I can't hear what John is saying from :32 to :38 because the audience is laughing so hard.
TheJohnnyCotts 3 months ago
@TheJohnnyCotts All the scripts have been published and are online. I just copypasted the lines for this sketch into the video's description.

@TheJohnnyCotts then it's probably not important 'cause they're laughing at what he said before

Why was this sketch edited out of the original broadcast?

@sousaphonist Perhaps because you can see the boom mike at 1:12

Was the sushi any good?

Ohhh, now I get it. And sushi's not really my thing.

According to wikipedia they're still around. They must have changed their number.
I've never heard of this scene... very cool.

Perhaps they got too many calls following this video!
themontypythonmuseum 2 years ago
That's entirely possible, and if so, that's too funny. Do you know a) why it was cut and b) how it ended up on a Buffalo PBS station?
wookie72 2 years ago
All of them certainly have hidden talents in dancing. Heheh. And now I want to call that number really really badly.
PrudenceNumberNine 2 years ago 3
Yes, they could have had brilliant careers in the national ballet! Talk about missed opportunities!

No, the owner of the tape HAS returned it to the pythons, but the lazy people who made the dvd thought it was easier to get it from youtube...
