  • If I was doing that scene where the woman phones the detective. I probably wouldn't have shown her face firstly it gives away the suprise ending and secondly her sounding like a man kind of spoilt the moment because it made me laugh that she sounded like a man.

Perhaps Dick wasn't the best choice of name considering some of the lines that accompany But the name... Seriously Dick HandCock? you make it sound like a porn script... with guns... But other than that it was quite entertaining.

  • whats the best way to light to get the venitian blind effect? u use on board mic?

  • something that definitely wasn't a turn-off was the interaction between you and "kate" - very convincing.

sorry for the criticism, but in a few of these amateur efforts i see some real potential...yours is one of them.

  • Hey JckSwan. You seem to know your stuff within the techniques of filming Film Noir. I'm a final year student and for our thesis project we are making a detective, film noir style film based on Jeph Loeb's The Long Halloween. Do you recon it's easier to film in b/w so you can see the effects the ligting gives or to put a b/w filter on later in the editing? Any other advise you have would be great. Thank you.

  • ...the dialogue is also too forced. don't attempt to make every line some off-the-cuff pearl of wisdom or witticism, it helps to include some speech that actually develops plot and character development. if i get the impression i'm watching a video edition of the concise oxford book of quotations, it's a turn-off.

  • i concur working on a noir novel and when i get blocked have too remind myself

  • ...watch any studio production from the 40s and the actors' faces are almost always lit, it's the background that remains in darkness - setting the mood; they're also not entirely filmed at night. apart from suffering terribly from vitamin d deficiency, no one operates perpetually at night, except vampires and curb-crawlers.

  • the camera work is good, some of the acting is fine...but the story, dialogue and lighting is poor. why is it when anyone shoots an amateur noir film, their immediate instinct is to cut it so dark it's impossible to see faces?...

  • um hot and dangerous dames and yeggs, mugs and joes who knows what they knows.

  • Good Lighting. The only problem for me is the sound, which was not very good. But in general that's very cool.

  • Hahaha 3:58 u see a microhpone

  • Well done. Nice light and shadows. Dick Hancock - quite a funny name.

  • The first thing Hancock does is shoot the first and only lead he has?? I wouldnt do that...

  • VERY well done. Im a BIG fan of film noir and this has to be the best "remake" of the genre Ive seen on YouTube. Nice story with a lot of twists for only being 10 minutes long. Great look, good acting, and the score is good as well.

  • Great, lighting, mate.

  • Ha! Nice. I have been on a noir kick lately. This is good. 5 star.

  • DICK HANCOCK HUH...lol anyways

Great work with the light and dark. Not many first timers can do such a great job

  • Whilst obviously not a professionally made film it's a quality homage to the genre. Some acting is better than others of course but on the whole for an acting school project it's a great bit of work. Much better than most on here. You seem to have achieved a rather high level of quality with the upload, any idea how?

  • Hey, nice film. Very true to the genre, which is very difficult to write it! NIce lighting and composition. The silhouette shots were lovely. Where did you find your foley and score? I'm trying to find sound for a six minute film I just shot...
