  • A very interesting video that I found purely by chance, and I'm glad I did. Great footage and narration + a valuable source of personal history. As for the question of "when" this was recorded, I would have to guess it took place during the early period of US military involvement in Vietnam. There is genuine optimism on the part of the soldier telling his story (even as a somewhat unwilling draftee), and as yet, no real skepticism from the CBS reporter. That would come later, when...

  • War is silly...it's such a waste, just imagine all those people you could have met, perhaps under different circumstances you would have been best friends or enemy's, war takes that away from you, it brainwashes you into thinking of only the objective; heck I would go as far as to say I wish I could have met the Nazi soldiers; I don't agree with their agenda but I know that out of millions of germans at least one that was killed by an alliance soldier was going to be my best friend...

  • What year was this shot?

  • Happy Veterans Day. I wonder what happened to this soldier.

  • @daveofcincinnati I wonder what his later letters sounded like.Go Tropical Lighting!

  • johnstown, pa!!!! that is close to me!!!

  • The cat who reported this story for CBS, John Laurence, was one of the very best on the ground in Vietnam, Republic Of. He was a soldier's scribe. If you ever saw his special on CBS about a First Cav infantry company you might agree that it was a masterpiece. He relied on a multi-tour sergeant nicknamed "Killer" and gave a chilling account of how the men refused to follow a FNG officer's command to go down a path. Anyone who walked the bush knew better. Laurence's book was great, too.

  • great video, i hope he got home alright

  • @Fr33zeBurn Wow...real mature. Resorting to name calling.

  • @Fr33zeBurn I find it ironic that you criticize a video on western soldiers but your channel showcases your videos of videogames on western soldiers. Piss off, you videogame nerd hypocrite.

  • @Fr33zeBurn You're just mad about what happened in 1874...you know, when Thomas moved his muffin shop to America. Coming on to a stranger's video and calling names. What an immature shite you are. csuh should block your ignorant ass.

  • @Fr33zeBurn Would you rather be speaking German? Fuck you, you revisionist asshole.
