You also have to consider the fact that buildings in california (at least I hope so) are designed to withstand earthquakes because otherwise it would be impossible to live there with moderate earthquakes happening every few years. Buildings in the east, however, aren't designed to be "earthquake proof" so they have a higher chance of falling, thus the panicking is justified.

I live at el Salvador, one of the countries with most earthquakes in America. In my short 15 years I've experienced 5 mayor earthuakes. I always get told to get under a desk when an earthquake starts. That's the dummest advise if ur in a buiding!!!

Doesn't LA have another fault line that is overdue for another quake and its the Puente Hills Fault that goes from the San Gabriel Valley to Downtown LA and that fault line is supposed to make Landers 7.3 size quake.
