  • can we please stop talking about holes?

  • jayz cried listening to this.

  • hope it will have more than 3 chords for a change

  • Nas won

  • i love polly....i just wish she would eat more food....she sometimes looks like she's one missed meal away from complete organ failure..... boo hoo

  • dobre!

  • dobre

  • this has absolutely nothing to do with PJ's genius, originality or gift for wry if a bit dark .humor.i think she has of the most photogenic faces I've ever seen.A canvas that awaits the brush- when you hear her music -it's recognition of a side of yourself that you've either forgotten or never been "introduced" to.Remarkable human being as well as artist.

  • Her songs send chills down my spine every time I listen to them! A TRUE artist!

  • fucking great! <3<3.. =D

  • great song, but very sad love it

  • I believe PJ is an artist.... and that is a big word.

On another unrelated subject, some people misunderstood my reply to that brute and impulsively associated my comment to his "views". I wish her "fans" would've displayed minimal wit and noticed that I was implying that she is likely unable to ever "suck" and if she did that would be fantasy material to me.

  • I recently started getting into PJ Harvey which is very strange for cause I listen to mostly metal. It took a good friend and some herbs ;) for me to instantly find a connection with her music...thank you Jessica!

  • Everyone has different taste in music. I find Alanis's lyrics and music very inspiring. Many are obsessed with PJ Harvey. I deeply admire her, but I like Alanis better. It's just what I associate more with. It's called an opinion. It doesn't mean that one is crap and the other is God.

  • at last clever comment

  • Well. you do have a right to your opinion and judging by the fact that you're in your 20s, your opinions will likely change many times before you're through.

Many felt the music industry reared its ugly head in 1995 when Alanis won the Grammy for best album for a female performer. She was up against PJ & Bjork, who had both just put out masterpiece albums that year (TBYML & Post) which to many were the best CDs in years, male or female! The rivalry and resentment might have started there.

  • arg.commentor below in regards to another aommentor further down ...Alannis made ZERO good albums.........some Americans were caught up by her but in Canada we already knew she was manufactured crap she has nothing to stand on ......different species, PJ is an artist, a force not a stand in.

  • @fruitloom not all woman are catty, drama queen, attention seeking reality star wannabees. I hate how women are always pigeon-holed into stereotypes, clearly the 90's trio destroyed those stereotypes.

  • piano kinda reminds me of that theme music from pay it forward.

  • In interview with Polly, Björk and Tori all together, on question: "Do you, or have you ever, felt in competition with each other ?" Tori sead: "...Journalists pit women against each other. If you think about Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page and Eric Clapton they were all much more similar to each other than we are. We have tits. We have three holes. Thats what we have in common".

  • @frutiloom

the thing with that is that journalists pit those 3 together all the time as well and jimmy page is nothing like Hendrix, to be honest I think its more based in the fact that they are successful artists so journalists will always look at the next successful artist to compare them to,,sometimes the sexism isnt really there or to quote saxondale "come on girls let it go, weve all been dumped"

  • @frutiloom Omg that was fucking epic.

  • @frutiloom Maybe Tori's right. I don't know. But 'three holes'? Hopefully they've got more than three holes?

  • @bobbelibob maybe she only counts it as a hole if it fits something bigger then a finger......?

  • I love to look like her! Ppl say that!

  • We can admit that White Chalk is undoubtedly the most Tori-like of all PJ Harvey's albums.

We can also admit that PJ Harvey is better at being Tori Amos than Tori Amos herself has been for fourteen years, and perhaps ever. Sad, but true.

  • Ah come on, Tori wrote some good songs, she's Kate Bush's weird baby cousin, but PJ is amazing in comparison

  • @minaroar I love both, and Bjorn and Patti Smith and Billie Holiday and Nina Simone, Odetta and Edith Piaf, and they are all wonderful in what they represent creativelly.

  • I don't know Edith Piaf, however I have heard her name, I LOVE ODETTA, her greatest hits changed my life, she died last year.

  • if you compare A with B,you destroy both

  • Well.. I really like Tori...I think she´s great, but I LOVE PJ she is really amazing. I can see the comparison (There both women and in mine opinion beautiful and euh... well... that's about it...) and I love to see them both anywhere in the near future... well...the best comes first (PJ in may!!)...

  • Alanis better than Pj? That actually made me laugh. Alanis made one good record. Pj has made many and will continue to make many more.

  • @andrewmacmillan I'm inclined to agree - a lot of people liked that record, & tho' it wasn't my thing, I don't like saying things are crap when there's clearly artistry & passion in them. But as for lasting value, yeah.

  • its nice to see so many pictures have the same theme....,beauty..nice vid..

  • i think i never saw a picture of her showing naked legs. wow, she is one of my fancies. by the way, white chalk is an awsome album.

  • PJ Harvey is the queen of rock - Hands down. She is a talented writer, she has a terrific voice and is an awesome performer.

  • Not to mention a great set of legs.

  • Eeeek do I prefer Thom Yorke or Polly? Cool as he is, I dont think I could live with his beard; go Polly and those truly amazing legs (and naturally voice and songs)

  • too many strange comments

  • for a hundred year in the time of this shallow life of mine. pjh has given to me the songs i can no hear and yet feel in the pain that lay in-between moments

  • is this song about abortion?

  • Sounds like it to me "something's inside me unborn and unblessed disappears in the ether one world to the next"

  • yeah, that's also what I thought... no matter how quiet pj may sound, she's always disturbing

  • all manner of things can die in a person, not just a baby. Hope, love and many other emotions can die..

  • It seems to be about abortion, to me (reminds me of The Sider House Rules, what with all the ether). But it's beautiful even if you don't interpret it any specific way.

  • One of the other videos on YouTube that talks about the album "White Chalk" says that PJ made a specific reference to this song as referring to a miscarriage. Well, they are called "natural abortions," which would make that technically accurate, but it is not about abortion so much as miscarriage, which would surely lead to a similar medicated state for treatment.

  • I'm not gonna argue with the songwriter.

However, the song itself does not give any clues towards a spontaneous abortion rather than an induced abortion. As far as I can tell it describes the experience of a medical procedure that is quite similar for induced abortions and incomplete spontaneous abortions (not all miscarriages require treatment, but these do). Perhaps she left it ambiguous on purpose?

  • Who gives a fuck either way - if the abortion was her choice - IT WAS HER CHOICE - none of your fuckin business - just enjoy the music.

Either way one less parasite on the planet.

  • Thank you for this song.

  • what a great piano player. it reminds me of tori.

  • I was talking with a friend the other day, about how disappointing Tori's recent albumns. PJ Harvey on the other hand, is stunning me with this new albumn, so great.

  • I agree totally. I have been waiting for Tori to release something of this quality for years. I'm so glad PJ made this.

  • this isn't Tori..and Tori doesn't suck ass.

  • i know that this isnt tori

since this doesnt suck ass, this rocks

    tori sucks ass tho

  • you suck-how about that..

  • soz tori is a genious,

    they both are

tori , pj, bjork and kate

    make music worthwhile

  • alanis? did u eat paint chips as a kid?

  • She always leaves me feeling haunted which is the most beautiful feeling. This is gorgeous.

  • she's fascinating

  • i love her

  • I like the song.

  • you two would make a nice couple

  • and the unborn and unblessed might be a characterization or tendency one has not yet taken notice of before. I'm not someone who takes things all too literal, and when it comes to phrases such as most likely it is not my cup of tea. Literacy and interpretations of poems is not an exact science, like chemistry or biology.

  • who ever said pj was commercial?

  • I UBER-LIEBE zis voman!!!

  • Such a beautiful, haunting song! Can't wait for my cd to arrive!

Yes, I guess there's no doubt it's about abortion...

  • Ooh me likey!

  • Wow, excellent dissection, Machismo!

  • The ceiling is moving, moving in time,

like a conveyer belt, above my eyes.

When under ether, the mind comes alive,

but concious of nothing, but the will to survive.*

  • I lay on the bed, waist down undressed,*

look up at the ceiling feeling happiness.*

    Human kindness.

The woman beside me, is holding my hand,

I point at the ceiling, she smiles so kind.*

Something's inside me, unborn and unblessed.*

Disappears in the ether, this world to the next.

Disappears in the ether, one word to the next.*

    Human kindness.

  • (general comments of her state due to grogginess caused by the anasthetic/drugs)

(she is laying on the surgery table, with her pants off because they are giving her an abortion)

(euphoria cause by drugs/relief because abortion is being done)

(This is the nurse/doctor holding her hand looking after her through the abortion process)

(this refers to the UNBORN and UNBLESSED foeus in her)

(this is a reference of how the foetus is going to die, and pass from this world into heaven/next world)

  • very interesting. thank you very much.

  • JESUS! Good 'ol Peej, huh?! XD

  • Quite! Now i know why there isn't a video. The bravest lead single since Me And A Gun by Tori Amos.

  • i don't think it is about drugs, it is more about some sort of confusion and becoming aware of the need to affiliate after a long time of loneliness, which also makes a person wasted and confused

  • It is about abortion

  • ok thanks i thought so!

  • is this about abortion?

  • yes it is about abortion

  • thank you. enjoy.

  • This song is beatiful.I am a huge PJ fan and i just cant wait for her new album.Thank you so much for posting this. You made a pretty nice selection of her pictures.
