I agree 100% that derivatives are main problem. Surprisingly, I heard my local Congressman, Collin Peterson, talking on the radio about this at least 3 months ago. I recall him mentioning the 50 trillion plus figure. Incidentally he was one of the few Democrats who has been voting against the bailouts. Silver is used in manufacturing of all kinds. Every mobile phone for instance needs silver to work. So if nothing dreadful happens there will be a spike in demand (and a rise in price). You can always sel it back faster.

As a 'money' it is more practical than gold in day to day barter systems. If you're planning on using silver to purchase in the future, don't expect Asda to be open ;-)

Larger amounts are a hedge against inflation. Smaller coins are a hedge against hyper-inflation.
