You know guys, RS1 is really old school rock n' roll, but I really don't know how RS2 might sound like. If you compare PE1 with Scarsick, those two albums are like two different bands made them. I personally love all their albums (except BE, it's, I don't know, too much?). I don't know, but I really can't wait for RS2!
I really like BE,but the only bad thing about it is that it seems like "poetry with some music on the background"...Even though,It provides e great pleasure...
(Oh,and Scarsick FTW! I really needed to say that! :P )
Thay are the best band in activity. Haunting melodies, excellent technique and a singer who gives me goosebumps every note he sings!!! and...live they are better than on CD!!!!!!
People complain about PoS changing their style... they never exactly had one, the style is completely hand in hand with the concept of the album, they take that very seriously. It wouldn't surprise me if they broke out some black metal on the next release, they jump all over the place.
I think Scarsick has some very cool elements to it. It also has some goofy shit on it too. BE was way to overwrought for me, and I love the grandiose. Now they sound like a slightly more rockin version of Maroon 5. Bands should always progress, POS gets ahead of even themselves
It's amazing when you see prog metal fans putting down bands and some tracks only because they don't like some changes. A prog metal fan should be the most open minded music lover of all. Disco Queen is one of the best tracks on Scarsick to me, and those disco parts may not be metal, but they sure are refreshing and add personality to the track. After all, it's all about making good music, not being more metal than others. Grow up to music, guys. Open up your minds. PoS rules.
@moofyman I really liked Scarsick. Yes, it wasn't "prog" at first sight. It's not the prog that Dream Theater does. I think it perfectly reflects the whole concept of the album. The rough and straight-forward sound fits perfectly to the lyrical themes.
@Fimbultyr I'm glad to see another PoS fan that liked Scarsick. It helps to think of it as separate from PE1, and see it as its own concept. It's unconventional, but Daniel definitely stacked his metaphors high on that album. And yeah, BE was awesome too :D
Then again, Pain of Salvation are actually a progressive band that plays progressive rock/metal. Dream Theater aren't a progressive band, yet they play prog rock/metal.
Actually we share some facts. This song made me respect the band. Be made me fall in love. But I have to disagree with you. All their records before Be share some common characteristics and despite the extreme lyrical expression of a wide variety of emotions, which differ from record to record, these albums have some sort of homogeneity. Be was something exceptional and unique. Back in '07 we all waited for a new be to rise and shine. We got a more band-oriented album (1/2).
When I got scarsick. I couldn't get why this band changed so much. A transformation which I considered a defacement that days. But as it grew inside me I think I got it. Yea, maybe it's a lot catchier. But beneath the catchy choruses and lyrics which reach teen-like boldness lie great symbolisms. We're all living in the big machine, it's unavoidable. They're still battling against it (it got longer than I expected it to be) (2/3).
Their older,"outside of the system" point of view was based on raw complexity. The beauty of that was the proccess of firstly understanding the material and then feeling it.
Now they're under a cloaking device. All the messages are hidden. The beauty of this is dechiphering those messages, which is crucial in order to understand them! I consider "Scarsick" as a great work.
I'm gonna wait 'till road salt to express my opinion on that, collectively (3/3).
Hm, what a detailed explanation :) Well, maybe "crap" wasn't the right word. What I like about PoS isn't only the great lyrics, their impressive skill and the deep thoughts they put into their music. What I like most are the wonderful melodies and the great atmosphere. And in my opinion they lost these completely. The song that definitely ruined it for me was "disco queen". That one is just plain awful.
Disco queen is such a controversial tune. I'm using the term "tune" in purpose.
The irony behind the blend of describing an old vinyl which is playing and offensive sexual acts which are part of our pop culture is just stunning.
The music is just... disco metal?! Sure it has an experimental value, but not the one we're used to. Well... I have a lot of thoughts concerning their music. If you want me to share them with you just let me know. I'll send you a pm, since it'll be long...!
you don't have to like the music - but it's so odd to claim that this music lacks power. There is such a thing as dynamics in music - even metal music, believe it or not...
Who said this is for "metaaaaaaal".. If you look for something, please go and watch "far beyond metal(live) by Strapping Young Lad". You'll be satisfied.
look for their other songs and you'll find metal songs if that's what you want but I remind you that this is a progressive band and they don't need to be heavy for anyone
Got a little power metal around 3:26.

RS2 will sound pretty much like RS1, as they were initially intended to be one double-album.

It's a shame their two latest albums has been shit, but look at it this way: We've got all the other albums that kick ass! So we should be happy =)
