Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont have to be about the cleanest and least grown up states in the east. everything else to the south of those states is cites and bigger suburban areas. theres not really that many places like that in the 3 states. It's territorial competition, they see it as you, a "straphanger", coming into their territory and take what they believe to be their game for your own. Aside from the hunting issue, wherever you go in the world, the natives will always feel a certain amount of mistrust or hostility toward the tourist, it's just the way it is.

@pady973 Extremely high property taxes, no jobs, and due to a ton of clear cutting in the past most of Maines real old growth is gone replaced mainly by pine. No large trees like there used to be. It has a very high rate of acohol and drug abuse and has one of the highest cancer rates in the nation. It's also lacking in mental heath as well as physical health care providers. Also growing up in Maine I can tell you that Mainers are NOT the stereotypically friendly people you hear about.

Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont have to be about the cleanest and least grown up states in the east. everything else to the south of those states is cites and bigger suburban areas. theres not really that many places like that in the 3 states. It's territorial competition, they see it as you, a "straphanger", coming into their territory and take what they believe to be their game for your own. Aside from the hunting issue, wherever you go in the world, the natives will always feel a certain amount of mistrust or hostility toward the tourist, it's just the way it is.

I am responding more to the comments. Having grown up in Mass and for some reason a number of my outspoken college professors were Mainiacs. Everyone joked that Maine was Gods country and that the rest of New England was Devil's Haven. I have studied a good deal of folk life and lit. Have loved Marshall Dodge since the '70's. the thing about it is, maine has a lot of rich costal fucks that, have significant political influence and change laws to benefit their pockets. they increase income tax, lower sales tax and change zoning laws as they please. the regular mainer finds himself screwed with no representation.
for the record there is a lot of hicks in maine, but i will take a hick over a hoodrat any day of the week.

Yeah Maine, High Cancer Rates, High Suicide Rates, High Alcoholism, No jobs, Lack of Mental Health Services, High drug abuse rate, etc etc etc. PS what's wrong with growth? If it's done right growth is a very healthy thing, otherwise we will be stuck in the stone ages forever. PSS Maine was one of the first states to supply POWER to other states... look it up.

Why does Michigan on this map look like a flaccid penis? I guess the people who made this video were in California and never got around to visiting the Midwest. You know I would LOVE to live in Maine. I live in Delaware and I'm trying to find somewhere else on this east coast to live, I don't want to live anywhere further west really. Maine looks so beautiful is it a fairly affordable place to live? I wouldnt think it would be too expensive to live there. Somebody tell me more about this gorgeous state!

@pady973 Extremely high property taxes, no jobs, and due to a ton of clear cutting in the past most of Maines real old growth is gone replaced mainly by pine. No large trees like there used to be. It has a very high rate of acohol and drug abuse and has one of the highest cancer rates in the nation. It's also lacking in mental heath as well as physical health care providers. Also growing up in Maine I can tell you that Mainers are NOT the stereotypically friendly people you hear about.
