How many artists today have the talent to do acapella, and make it sound just as good as it does with music. That takes talent to do that, and you had to really have the ability to sing!
@georgiaboi420 Nicole and Michelle will turn 43 on October 13,2011.I can't believe it's been that much time since I read when they were born. The conductor's wife told me she was expecting the previous August.Didn't hear that much more about her until she died.
Flo all day. Her voice is so audible on this with the stripping of the background instruments. And I know some people knock Diana Ross for countless, exhaustive reasons, but you can not deny her work ethic.
I love love love ALL of The Supremes (including Diana), but Flo has my heart. I know she HAD personal problems, but who doesn't. She overcame them. Some say that her voice is ordinary, but some of those people haven't heard all of her songs. She can sing anything from r&b to opera and not many artists can hang with that. She can move from contralto up to operatic soprano without missing a beat (see Oh Holy Night). Flo was a beautiful woman with a beautiful voice.
@ronnykmarshall The soulful voice that you hear is Mary's NOT Flo's...jesus, why don't people know this shit already?? Florence is the alto in the Supremes (and sometimes she does soprano notes cuz she was just that good!!) and Mary is the contralto (deep register) in the Supremes.
kurtsupreme, it's quite remarkable that you think that a couple of women who baby-babyed and oohed and aaahed their way through HIT records and to success in the background should somehow be remembered decades later. It's not only only remarkable, it's laughable.
What I love are the people who say you are either a Supremes fan OR a Diana Ross fan. Trust me, I was there at the beginning (I'm prettty old), and I love the Supremes and I love Diana and her solo career. Very, very few groups continue as an entity for more than a few years. Expecting the Supremes to do so was and is a pipe dream. Enjoy all the music and celebrate the great contribution they made to music and to the struggle in this country for equal rights.
@kenhamlett1 Well I think you can be a fan of all the members as individuals as well as be a fan of the group as a whole (and of course each and every lineup) =D Thanks for commenting
@kenhamlett1 Finally...somebody gets it! I don't understand why a few are so angry with Diana for being a star pupil in the music industry game? People tend to make business...personal. However, i can say that those people that seem to undervalue her unparalleled accomplishments and contribution, REGULARLY find themselves FIXATED on that same versatilely talented, big-eyed & skinny Detroit girl! Why hate, when it's undeniable?
@motownbaby I don't think everyone who criticizes some of Diana Ross' actions "hates" her. I certainly don't. I don't know her. Something being "business" doesn't exempt one from behaving like a decent human being. I don't think Diana is quite a viscous as others make her out to be, but it's quite obvious that she placed fame above all else. She really didn't seem to care who got hurt on her climb. I don't even know if she did it consciously. Her success is undeniable, her backstabbing is too.
@RareMusicalGems I have to agree with you RareMusicalGems! Your comments are truthful and logical. And not to make excuses for Diana's behavior, but none of us have walked in her shoes (or the other girls for that matter). It's unfortunate that the original trio didn't record a few years longer, but even girl groups that are sisters rarely stay together. Why would we expect the Supremes to? I still LOVE their music and it has definitely stood the test of time! WOW...46 YEARS LATER!!!
@kenhamlett1 It is possible to appreciate both the legendary Supremes and the solo career of Diane. What makes a "Ross As A Solo Act" fan is someone who thinks that Diane was THE SUPREMES! They WEREN'T there and they believe all the Berry/Diane propaganda that was and is still generated by Motown. If you think that The Supremes were part of Diane's legacy (instead of the other way around), you are a "Ross as a solo act" fan. They are everywhere in their ignorance!
In the book "The Women of Motown," one of the Velvelettes claimed that they too contributed to backing vocals on some Supremes recordings. Also, bear in mind that Mary & Flo did so many takes, that it is quite likely that multiple takes were used to thicken their sound on records that were released as singles. Listen to "Back In My Arms Again" from the #1's collection - with headphones. You'll hear different sets of backing vocals on each channel, both contributed by Mary & Flo.
@Schwartzwolf Good points, but you can hear on the Alternate Version of the song with just Flo and Mary on backing (the one with the footsteps) what the backing sounds like with just Flo and Mary. It sounds like one of the Andantes added some extra backing (the contralto of the group as I can hear that deep tone)
Why do you people care about The Andantes....they were like extra violins that were added in the studio after the original recording session as a "SWEETENER." They don't really matter! Why don't you spend your time trying to figure out all the phony SUPREMES who are singing on Diane's supposedly "solo" recordings. On all of Diane's "solo" recordings, there are more voices behind her than the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Why aren't you interested in who is playing the violins? It's the same thing!
Some "facts" can be twisted and distorted to take away from the "big" picture. Flo, Mary, Diane, HDH, Cholley Adkins, The Funk Brothers, and Berry Gordy COLLECTIVELY were the "big" picture known as THE SUPREMES! Placing emphasis on The Andantes only distorts from the "big" picture and detracts from the legend of The Supremes. The silly "Ross as a solo act" fans use The Andantes as ammunition against Mary and Flo to inflate Diane's importance in the group! Remember, Diane was replaced as well.
@kurtsupreme Yes very good point. I was simply saying that an extra voice was added for the final version of this song and that on the alternate version it is easy to hear only Mary and Flo...I really didn't mean to offend...I am all for The Supremes being acknowledged as a GROUP as really no one member has ever come close to matching the success of the group as a whole
I just think that we need to be careful how we direct our attention because there are those out there who would use any information they can to minimize the legacy of The Supremes I definitely agree with your last statement.........the legend of the Supremes is DEFINITELY GREATER than the sum of each of its parts!. The Andantes are no more a part of MY reality than Diane's background singers who held her up vocally on ALL of her "solo" recordings.
@kurtsupreme Yes I agree! I also think all Diana's "backing singers" from The Andantes, to Mary and Flo (trust me I personally see them as solo artists in their own rights) to the ones on her debut solo album...ALL COULD S A N G !!!
I get annoyed though when the group is referred to as Diana Ross & The Supremes because doing so todday completely ignores the legacy of the 70s Supremes who managed to be a very successful R&B group in their own right regardless of the 60s lineups.
Most of the "Ross as a solo act" fans are younger and didn't experience the phenomenon OR the time period of the SUPREMES! With only knowing Diane as a solo act AND not being familiar with the 1960's (the age of the musical GROUPS), they are only able (or willing) to see The Supremes as "Tony Orlando and Dawn" or "Destiny's Child" where there was a celebrity lead vocalist with background singers
@kurtsupreme Well until I watched Dreamgirls, I only knew Diana Ross...LOL if you had mentioned any of the other members I would have had no clue who they were...I am glad that DC (Destiny's Child) has shown that you can have a prominent lead singer but the other members can also have very successful solo careers. Kelly Rowland has had two UK #1s and 1 in the U.S. along with countless top tens in the UK and in many other European countries...
@kurtsupreme LeToya who was replaced by Michelle Williams in 2000, has had two #1 US R&B albums and a #1 US album along with 4 top 20 US R&B hits.
Michelle's debut solo album was the biggest selling gospel album of 2002 and charted at #1 on the U.S. Gospel chart with her second album going to #2 on the same chart.
Her third album (and first Pop album) Unexpected peaked at #11 on US R&B and #42 on U.S. and its lead single reaching #1 on US Dance airplay and #4 U.S. Dance and #47 in the UK
I have no interest in "Destiny's Child." Depite the accomplishments of the other members, many people saw that group as a vehicle for Beyonce Knowles. Young people today see The Supremes in the same light as a vehicle for Diane. In reality, Berry Gordy and Diane were the only ones who saw it that way. America loved the Supremes as a cohesive group where NONE of the members was greater than the whole. When Diane started to become more visually "uppity" within the group, most fans resented it.
@kurtsupreme I was simply showing you that times have (thankfully) changed and it is possible for most of the members of a group to obtain solo stardom...
Yes, I got that......and it is a good point! My point is that younger "Ross as a solo act" fans are simply unable to experience how things ACTUALLY were then AND they are equally unable to keep their own "Ross as a solo act biases" out of the equation. That is the saddest part for me.......protecting a legacy that later generations are not able or willing to perceive and/or dealing with people who would seek to detrroy or diminish it in favor of a less worthy legacy: "Diana Ross as a solo act."
@kurtsupreme Yes I know but I don't think the blame is to be put on the younger generations *cough* - me - but on the media who frequently use the term Diana Ross & The Supremes and the record labels who release compilations as Diana Ross & The Supremes with Diana Ross in bold/twice the size of & The Supremes...in fact, there is one compilation that features songs from the 70s Jean era yet the cover art boldly states Diana Ross & The Supremes. A sponge can only soak up what it's been wiped in..
I know that they have been conditioned; however, most don't seem to want to learn the truth! What do you, as a younger person, attribute fo your own enlightenment on the subject? Secondly, WHY do these CDs come out as DIANA ROSS and The Supremes? Who's behind it? The name DIANA ROSS isn't exactly seeling records anymore!
@kurtsupreme Well...I think I've done a whole lot more than most my age/most Supremes fans in general by trying to keep the legacy of THE SUPREMES as a COHESIVE unit full of talented and gifted individuals ALIVE...like I said...the people to blame for the albums/compilations coming out the way they are is on the record labels putting them out and their staff...not me...hence why I always use the correct titles for my videos
@kurtsupreme .This is an inaccurate and unfair judgment because if you listen to the 60's Supremes recordings you'll notice that Diana's voice was featured on lead on the records long before they were officially named DraTS. Yes they may have been presented as a group on stage, but on their records? --NOT
@BlogShag On the 1960's recordings of the legendary SUPREMES (DMF) of which you are speaking, there was NO concept of "Diana" Ross as a solo artist. The concept was marketed as a lead voice and two support vocalists. When you heard Diane's voice, you thought SUPREMES. When the "Ross as a solo act" fans hear those same songs, they think "Diana" Ross. THAT is my point! The legend of the Supremes is greater than the sum of its parts. They don't know that Diane was once a part of something bigger!
@BlogShag The Beatles' legacy is still bigger than any of its members and The Supremes' legacy is still greater than Diane's. All of the marketing in the world can't change that fact for anyone in the know. Those who hear a Supremes song and hear "Diana Ross" are ignorant, misinformed, young or all three!
@kurtsupreme It amazes me that you can deny the reality here. Most people didn't attend their concerts or see their television performances. On their hit records... Are you listening? On their HIT records, acoustically how were they presented? Can you answer that with a straight face?
My post was obviously not intended for someone like yourself, but rather for people who like myself are interested in the behind the scenes workings that took place in the creation of some of these amazing songs, even if it means learning there were other parties involved.
i love this song - the Andante(s) make it sound lower to me i dont think a Andante is present on the Alternate Version/Recording becuase u can hear Flo clearly
Florence and Mary are on the song BUT at least one member of The Andantes is also on the released version of the song - including this acapella. You can hear the Andante on the chorus
Excuse me. YOU read the description wrong. I listed the chart informaton of More Hits By The Supremes, it is not related to the song information for STOP! IN THE NAME OF LOVE. I know The Andantes don't sing on the rest of the album.
I did not realise that it could be misunderstood like that, so thank you for showing me that. I will swap it round
Can't get much better then this :')

The Andantes are no more a part of MY reality than Diane's background singers who held her up vocally on ALL of her "solo" recordings.
kurtsupreme 2 years ago

With only knowing Diane as a solo act AND not being familiar with the 1960's (the age of the musical GROUPS), they are only able (or willing) to see The Supremes as "Tony Orlando and Dawn" or "Destiny's Child" where there was a celebrity lead vocalist with background singers
kurtsupreme 2 years ago

When Diane started to become more visually "uppity" within the group, most fans resented it.
kurtsupreme 2 years ago
@kurtsupreme I was simply showing you that times have (thankfully) changed and it is possible for most of the members of a group to obtain solo stardom...
MeetTheSupremes 2 years ago
Yes, I got that......and it is a good point! My point is that younger "Ross as a solo act" fans are simply unable to experience how things ACTUALLY were then AND they are equally unable to keep their own "Ross as a solo act biases" out of the equation. That is the saddest part for me.......protecting a legacy that later generations are not able or willing to perceive and/or dealing with people who would seek to detrroy or diminish it in favor of a less worthy legacy: "Diana Ross as a solo act."
kurtsupreme 2 years ago

The name DIANA ROSS isn't exactly seeling records anymore!
kurtsupreme 2 years ago

--NOT
BlogShag 1 year ago
@BlogShag On the 1960's recordings of the legendary SUPREMES (DMF) of which you are speaking, there was NO concept of "Diana" Ross as a solo artist. The concept was marketed as a lead voice and two support vocalists. When you heard Diane's voice, you thought SUPREMES. When the "Ross as a solo act" fans hear those same songs, they think "Diana" Ross. THAT is my point! The legend of the Supremes is greater than the sum of its parts. They don't know that Diane was once a part of something bigger!
kurtsupreme 1 year ago
@kurtsupreme that may be true kurt, but you have to be realistic here. That concept or feel didn't last long, or did it?
BlogShag 1 year ago
@BlogShag The Beatles' legacy is still bigger than any of its members and The Supremes' legacy is still greater than Diane's. All of the marketing in the world can't change that fact for anyone in the know. Those who hear a Supremes song and hear "Diana Ross" are ignorant, misinformed, young or all three!
kurtsupreme 1 year ago
@kurtsupreme It amazes me that you can deny the reality here. Most people didn't attend their concerts or see their television performances. On their hit records... Are you listening? On their HIT records, acoustically how were they presented? Can you answer that with a straight face?
BlogShag 1 year ago
My post was obviously not intended for someone like yourself, but rather for people who like myself are interested in the behind the scenes workings that took place in the creation of some of these amazing songs, even if it means learning there were other parties involved.

Florence and Mary are on the song BUT at least one member of The Andantes is also on the released version of the song - including this acapella. You can hear the Andante on the chorus

The Andantes do not sing on any of the songs you have listed on the right.
Branner 3 years ago 2
MeetTheSupremes 3 years ago
Yeah--it was unclear. Thanks for changing it--and thanks for this post.

No problem, I would never make that kind of mistake on a hit =S
