The only thing I can see here is that the grandmother got man handled after defying the officer. The only thing I question for the officer is the procedural steps because he tasered her before informing her to get on the ground.
tasers are to be used to avoid the use of excessive force. I think that in this situation a few bruises would have been better than the trauma to her heart. it is obvious officers are much quicker to use force if they don't have to physically hold a 72 year old women down on the ground.

He reported that she was a threat and needed to be tasered. The story has changed from the written report and she will be taking the police department to court.

She didn't sign, so she was under arrest. He pushed her back when she was crowding up against the oncoming traffic...he could have been more polite about it, probably just reacted.
She resisted and tried to leave, and he eventually tazed her.
If he grabbed her she'd be screaming some sort of assault, injury, etc. and he'd be fired for wrestling around with her instead of tazing her.

The citizens of this town have lost all respect for law enforcement since we have seen first hand that we have more to fear from the Police than we do the crooks.

She did eventually say, "give it to me and I'll sign it" as she was going back to her car then he shoved he back, this was the point he took it too far and then just lost control with the taser...but thank goodness for tasers cause you know if he didn't have that option, he would've shot her. What should he have done? Try to put on the handcuffs by force and possibly break bones? If he threw the obviously frail woman to the ground, it would of most definitely happened.
What if she was pepper sprayed? She still would have to be put on the ground which, could have broken bones. The taser got her to the ground without severe injury.
If it was a young black guy, not many people would have a problem with it. Hell if it was a black guy he probably would have been tased as soon as he stepped out of the car. But since it's an old lady everyone thinks she's immune to the law. She was warned multiple times and if she just complied it never would have happened.
All this woman had to do was sign the traffic ticket and fight it in court. She could have most likely gotten out of it or at least reduced it. That's why we have a judicial system.

If you watched the entire raw footage, he told her to sign it many times before that. Only when the officer was finally going to arrest her for the whole "disobeying an officer" or whatever it's called did she say that. You don't bring someone out of their vehicle to give them a speeding ticket. When she said "I'll sign it", she was in the middle of being arrested for disobeying a cop. If a cop's trying to give me a ticket, and I spit in his face, I can't just say "OK I'll just sign the ticket, don't arrest me".
As for the tasing, she was tased after being told at least five time she was going to be if she didn't start complying. Even so, she kept resisting and was tasered.

If they insist you sign the ticket, always first print the words "UNDER DURESS". It makes any admission null and void. Moreover, the ticket is not a cause of action against you. It has little to do with having a gun and more to do with maintaining control of the situation. You have to realize that the major threat in this situation wasn't the possibility of a weapon. It was the high speed traffic passing with in a meter of the cars. The lady continued to move the officer into a position on or over the white line and that is a very dangerous situation. Officers around the country are killed in traffic accidents monthly if not weekly.

The only thing I can see here is that the grandmother got man handled after defying the officer. The only thing I question for the officer is the procedural steps because he tasered her before informing her to get on the ground.

tasers are to be used to avoid the use of excessive force. I think that in this situation a few bruises would have been better than the trauma to her heart. it is obvious officers are much quicker to use force if they don't have to physically hold a 72 year old women down on the ground.

@McNeil211 Wrong... his verbal warnings were short and unclear. The officer gave half a second to sign before losing his patience and opening her door. He reported that she was a threat and needed to be tasered. The story has changed from the written report and she will be taking the police department to court.
Its easy to understand, police make mistakes and they lie. Use your brain and realize that non-compliance doesn't mean you use potentially deadly force.

It's the rule that's foolish. You're under arrest if you don't sign your ticket. Tell it to the judge.
She didn't sign, so she was under arrest. He pushed her back when she was crowding up against the oncoming traffic...he could have been more polite about it, probably just reacted.
She resisted and tried to leave, and he eventually tazed her.
If he grabbed her she'd be screaming some sort of assault, injury, etc. and he'd be fired for wrestling around with her instead of tazing her.

The uniformed thing in this video is not following police protocol for escalation, he went straight to less-than-lethal force when it was totally uncalled for an not escalated to.

The citizens of this town have lost all respect for law enforcement since we have seen first hand that we have more to fear from the Police than we do the crooks.

Our former Police Chief has more of a criminal record that the crooks in this town.
His Son (Former Sheriffs Dept. Investigator) was run out of the Courthouse for using county supplies, equipment and on County time to promote his personal business. He even went so far as to use County Letterhead. He is now a P.I. because no one wants him as a lawman.
This man's son broke into the local school and stole computers and electronics.

She did eventually say, "give it to me and I'll sign it" as she was going back to her car then he shoved he back, this was the point he took it too far and then just lost control with the taser...but thank goodness for tasers cause you know if he didn't have that option, he would've shot her. What should he have done? Try to put on the handcuffs by force and possibly break bones? If he threw the obviously frail woman to the ground, it would of most definitely happened.

What if she was pepper sprayed? She still would have to be put on the ground which, could have broken bones. The taser got her to the ground without severe injury.
If it was a young black guy, not many people would have a problem with it. Hell if it was a black guy he probably would have been tased as soon as he stepped out of the car. All this woman had to do was sign the traffic ticket and fight it in court. She could have most likely gotten out of it or at least reduced it. That's why we have a judicial system.
I'm not a cop sympathizer, I'm extremely against police brutality, and there are hundreds of instances of taser use where I thought it was horrible to use it, but this isn't one of those times.

Only when the officer was finally going to arrest her for the whole "disobeying an officer" or whatever it's called did she say that. Of course, it's cut up in the video to look like the guy took her out of the car and tased her right there.

You don't bring someone out of their vehicle to give them a speeding ticket. When she said "I'll sign it", she was in the middle of being arrested for disobeying a cop. If a cop's trying to give me a ticket, and I spit in his face, I can't just say "OK I'll just sign the ticket, don't arrest me".
As for the tasing, she was tased after being told at least five time she was going to be if she didn't start complying. Even so, she kept resisting and was tasered.

Here's the thing: when the reported said the 72 year old women "disobeyed" the officers commands, well, to me, that really stuck with me. I do not see where the officer has any command, or authority over me, or you. Who is he to determine what he can do to us? Personally, I would have followed his orders because I know that if I didn't, it would cost me a lot of money, but, in this particular case, she offered to sign the "damn ticket", and was shoved like a rag doll. If they insist you sign the ticket, always first print the words "UNDER DURESS". It makes any admission null and void. Moreover, the ticket is not a cause of action against you. Do a youtube search for "Marc Stevens beating civil traffic tickets" His advice is solid. Also, google Fully Informed Jury Association --come to court with your own voir dire questions. Get off scott free. People are always amazed when I walk out of court, case dismissed, because they lack knowledge and I don't.

After she refused to sign the ticket the LEO could have written (refused to sign) on the ticket or taken her into custody without totally disabling her. Originally tasers were supposed to be an alternative to "lethal force". Now they have turned into cattle prods to force you into submission.

As a mom, a nurse & an A.F. veteran, I'M outraged! She received $40,000 for this! Get the whole video.. she refused to sign the ticket,TOLD him to take her to jail, then gets out of the car, tells him to give her the f***ing ticket, he pushes her back fm the hwy traffic. DARED him to tase her, She acted like a fool! We taught ours to say "Yes, sir/ma'am". Just cooperate. If unfair we'll fight it in court. She should be ashamed of herself! SHAME ON GRANDMA! You should stop teaching your kids that the cops are the good guys. Most of them aren't anymore. They are being taught that the public is bad, and they are good. "Just cooperate with the police they are good, grandma and your neighbors are bad. I'd like to see what you will do when they are at your door demanding to hand over your children through cps. She was paid $40,000 for behaving badly. See the tape from the beginning. She sped, she refused to sign, she told him to arrest her, she stepped into traffic, she swore at the officer, she lied to the news before she knew there was a video and now she's $40,000 richer! Your tax dollars at work! Shame on her.

Why is it that a kid rescued from a parent who threw her infant in a tub of boiling oil can't be taken immediately away from that parent. this was a situation where everyone knew what happened--it was painfully obvious, but there were no witnesses to the event, preventing the right thing from happening. it took the better part of a year to remove her.

You don't ask the health of someone, usually out of control and dangerous, before subduing someone. Therefore, what is the officer to do? Nobody has offered a viable alternative yet. The copy "shouldn't have tasered her", but what was he to do? If he hurts her using any other type of force, he's crap out of luck. He's damned if he does, damned if he doesn't.

I've said many times in this thread: the cop should have kept his cool and talked this lady into accepting the ticket.
In any case, cops aren't supposed to get into no-win situations, especially with 72-year old women. Just admit that tasers have some, albeit very limited, use, but that this guy screwed up. No one wants to get filmed screwing up at work, but I'd bet that this guy is a laughing stock among his colleagues. He went too far. This situation didn't merit a taser.

you're missing the point. why can't police speak to people, persuade them rather than using a "non-lethal" weapon that sometimes kills people? what if that lady had a heart attack and died? i'm sorry, but if you think that a taser is appropriate in this situation, then you should not become a police officer. violence is the last resort. police officers should not push and taze women who pose no physical threat to themselves or anyone else. it's that simple.

Any other physical means might have severly injured the lady. All she had to do was comply in the first place. Also this video was edited for the media watch the full thing.

Listen to the cop screaming - "calm down! calm down!" He's the one with the problem, not her. You're right, it's easy to second guess. But this is on video. You do not taser people because they might walk into traffic. You do not taswer people because they argue with you, or don't listen. There is no excuse for tasering a 72-year old woman. The woman was out of line for signing the ticket but in her defense some cops know it is illegal to refuse to sign in some states and they don't explain that to the drivers, they simply stick to "SIGN IT BECAUSE I SAY SO" attitude...and people, specially old people don't like to be ordered around or treated like children.
The cop should have calmed down after all HE IS SUPPOSED TO BE THE PROFESSIONAL and explain WHY THE HELL SHE HAS TO SIGN and that it does not mean admission of guilt.

It has little to do with having a gun and more to do with maintaining control of the situation. You have to realize that the major threat in this situation wasn't the possibility of a weapon. It was the high speed traffic passing with in a meter of the cars. The lady continued to move the officer into a position on or over the white line and that is a very dangerous situation. Officers around the country are killed in traffic accidents monthly if not weekly.

@Kona77XP The police are supposed to enforce the law, not to enforce a "don't give attitude to cops" rule. Any officer who can't control himself, can't stop himself from beating a citizen just because they don't grovel shouldn't be on the streets, let alone an officer with authority.
