Well Paul Henry is very smart. He hosts a daily show where he has to be able to think on his feet and keep a dialogue open. He questions peoples beliefs and makes them justify their position on topics. Anyone can stand up and bleet on about a subject. Paul tests how well they know that subject and doesn't suffer fools. Further to the cross-subsidisation issue: The SUV is a less desirable mode of transport than public transport from many perspectives. The SUV owner *should* be paying for the alternative mode of transport in the same way smokers pay taxes on cigarettes to support the greater level of medical care they will likely eventually need as compared to non-smokers. We don't subsidising cigarettes and should not subsidise SUVs by foregoing electric trains tomorrow for 8 cents / litre today on guzzlers.

Paul Henry is the reason I don't watch TVNZ's Breakfast program. In this case, it's clear he wants to 'test' Russell Norman. Norman did fine. That said, Henry's argument about cross-subsidisation is not without merit. Norman needed to stay focused on his key points and not get mugged in the corner by any of Henry's red herrings. Henry and others have lost sight of the fact that Kyoto is market-based to satisfy guys like him. The alternative is CO2 reduction by government fiat.
