He's not a geologist. They do not predict volcanic eruptions, but volcanoes do show signs that they will blow within 2 weeks or so, and geologists have timelines and when certain things start happening it relates to how long it is until the eruption takes place. Even after the eruption starts, it's not lava pouring down a mountain, it's ash being shot into the air along with lava, which hardens and falls (hits people and kills them). Geologists will have signaled for an evacuation in time.
What we don't actually know is how high is the damage of the Eruption of a Super-Volcano, I believe to be a passive form of Eruption, it would crack and liberate gases in several places, but yellowstone would still exist and not blown apart as scientists says.
The amount of lava down there is just too big and don't have enough energy to blow up all those rocks up there, so it can't just go squirting up the ground.

Y2K was hype(was transparent, but sheep are easily led), but 2012 is a time when a lot of things are occurring at once: Solar Storms(predicted by NASA.. not necessarily huge within itself--unless it coincides with a change in our magnetic field. oh wait..), change in magnetic field(magnetic "north" currently moving at 40 miles/yr), solar system alignment.....
