  • Groundhogs are uinque.

  • Saw Tony perform this at the Malvern Winter Gardens in about 1973. I was about 8 feet in front of that guitar. One of the most vivid memories of my youth, it meshed well with teenage angst and determination. Amazing to see him doing it again here!

  • NeilThompson30

    Hi

You sound just like my late Uncle who could listen to any track and give you the chords ,wish I had this talent !!

Tony lives by me and is a great guy and he is in the studio at the moment recording a new album , I can't wait !!

  • Sorry, but that is awful............

  • @tullphantom Nice to see Tony still playing . It's not the best performance by any means I have to admit .

The original Groundhogs back in the day (early 70's )were fantastic !

You really should go back and listen to the originals to get a true idea of what this band were really all about .

  • @Glen694u Sorry for being negative on that last post Glen, but I never liked any live Groundhogs...I love the early studio albums, Thank Christ for the Bomb is superb, as is Split. I also rate Who will Save the World etc. I have met Tony, a real great guy. Hope he is well after his recent ill health.

  • remember this record being played at weeley festival 1971 through sound system at 6 in morning and when i got home i bought album!.it sounded just great through the clear air at that time of morning! lol

  • I've seen loads of drummers over the years play with TS and IMHO this guy is one of the best!

  • A proper rock band.. .Love them.

  • remember Groundhogs at The Octagon Theatre, Bolton around 69/70...also Magees in Bolton...if you're reading this Tony, remember Pete taking you round Bolton's watering holes before the gig LOL

  • going to stables milton keynes stray /groundhogs then of to skegness to blues and rock great start to new year

  • Hogs plus Stray also at Pete Fen's Real Music club Whetstone feb 7th.

B there or B square as they say

  • Is it wrong to say that their work is like Hendrix, with a little more blues?

And, can anyone tell me how you play the verse? Not the wah-induced riff, the verse

  • He's playing it different to the record here.

    On the record it's G/// D/F#m/ A/// A///

On the A bit he's adding a C and a G bit for the riff.

    On this he's just playing G/// F#m/// A/// A///

It sounds like he's damping all the strings apart from 6 and 4 on the G F# bit.

  • Sorry - I've messed up

    On the record it's G///Bm/F#m/ A/// A///

He IS playing these chords live but he's playing so few strings as opposed to the record that it's hard to hear them.

  • metalman - that is SOME gig - three brilliant bands. I saw Nutz do two supports - Heavy metal kids and Queen. It's common knowlege now that they were MUCH better live than on record.

13thmoon - I love Crosscut saw (it has my mate on drums - Cookie RIP - the loveliest bloke you could ever meet)

Rhinos is MY favourite Man album and you're right - the way side 2 is (sort of) one long track is amazing.

    My favourites are

    Stray - Saturday morning pictures

    Budgie - first album

    Groundhogs - Thank Christ

  • Thanks neilthompson30,didn't see your comment till now...We're similar mature vintage,eh? I

still have 4/5 vinyls and thought Crosscut Saw

had some classics on it...First Stray album is fantastic-My uncle gave it me then...Have loads

    Of Man vinyl,love Rhinos for B side,especially.

  • how about this then=nutz-stray-budgie on same bill at "the roundhouse" in 1977 on sunday evening

  • The 13th moon - you have brilliant taste - The Groundhogs, Stray (saw them on the same bill in 1972 - both amazing), Man and Budgie! Four of the best bands ever - live and on record.

  • brilliant as ever

  • who will save the world is the best!

  • The Groundhogs were extraordinarily underrated in a way I think Stray were and several other

    Class seventies bands,say,Man,Budgie,Horslips,

Yes not hard rock,I know and even SAHB to an

    Extent...SPLIT is a fantastic album,amazing.

  • 4ever

  • the sound was better last Saturday night in Frome

  • Best way to hear Split, in full, is through headphones for the incredible stereo effect to really appreciate the 'Hogs' work of art.

Great to see T.S. still touring.

'The sound Tony Mc Phee produced in the 70s is still great to listen to 30 yrs on.'

Very true, and will be, 50 years on.

  • not many albums get listened to from start to finish split always did and always up at 11

  • we do it better....lol just kidding. the groundhogs have to be the most 'missed' band if you get what i mean...not alot of people have heard of them....but they deserve much wider recognition....they are absolutely amazing!

  • TS fookin fantastique paardon me french

  • I have the original album "Split"....If you get a chance to listen to it.....Take it!

Another classic track is "Cherry Red"

The sound Tony Mc Phee produced in the 70s is still great to listen to 30 yrs on.

  • Yeah, "Cherry Red" Rocks! A real classic, as was the whole "Split" album, really.

The earlier albums were good too, but more mainline Blues.

  • Cherry Red is one of their best

  • This is GREAT ! Thanks.

  • I really enjoyed it, great sound, great drums!

who the hell are they??? just the vocal does not match the rest, but what a great sound !

It must be awesome to watch them live.

  • Sorry mate these are my era 70's. Unusual but well worth listening to.

  • Yeah, shame really cos in their heyday Groundhogs were as good as any of the heavy metal bands in the 70s.

  • Yep the overall sound isn't good.

Then again I wonder if you might do that well when you're in your sixties, after having a stroke...
