The guests on the show were so direspectful twards him. I was rased Christian, but I live in Israel. So I have a very strong connection to all Jewish people.
But they were just like "Would you preform on a saturday for a million dollars?"
To a Jewish person that's like selling your religion on a holy day. I don't care about that, cause I'm not relegious, but have some damn respect for a person who's sitting next to you, damnit.
not just jewish religion though, "one love" the best part of reggae, the dude used to smoke pot and listen to jamaican reggae, its his roots for the beautiful songs that he makes now. I think he uses the term " get you high in the marijuana sky" im sure that inspiration came from somewhere besides judaism

Not feeling it. Looks a bad reggae impersonator dressed up for halloween. he's white from white plains. Martha stewart must be his neighbor and hillary clinton must be his only fan. I bet jamaicans want to beat the crap outta this guy.i'm ultra othodox and i'm having ungodly thoughts of stoning the jew back into guy.
Matisyahu is overrated in the sense that there are so many reggae artists that go unrecognized. Matisyahu isn't doing anything that many Jamaican artists are doing, and have been doing. I think much of his popularity is due to his novelty.
hmmh, you might have a lot of truth there, but I think there's something more to Matisyahu. I don't immediately see Matisyahu as a purely reggea-style-artist, he's influenced by rap as well. At least that's the way I see it..
I have heard some of his stuff, and perhaps I'll go check it out some more, but my beef isn't directed toward him per se, but more just that being a long-time fan of music in general, I constantly see many talented musicians overlooked, but when someone just looks different, they get seemingly instant recognition.
fair enough, iv never heard reggae like this before. but its not what i listen to often. who else is as good as this? (not an attack, i want to find more of this stuff)
Basically this is dancehall reggae. Nowadays, dancehall artists are mixing in hip-hop/rap. Short history: Ska started in the 60s in Jamaica, evolved into rocksteady, which turned into roots reggae, then came dancehall, which then mixed with rap. (rap's origins are in Jamaican dancehall/ska). You could try Shabba Ranks, Capleton, Buju Banton, Ninjaman, Patra, Chaka Demus and Pliers, Bounty Killer, Sean Paul, the list goes on and those are just more recent artists over the past 15 years or so.
There are numbers of dancehall artists who are also influenced by rap, and they were doing it before him. Starting around the late 80s/early 90s, numerous Jamaican artists tried to break into America. Shabba Ranks was just one artist mixing rap with dancehall back then. Matisyahu's not bad, but nowhere near the level of Jamaican artists who have been crafting the music style for many decades, years....
kosher music.

Matisyahu should not be compared to Jamacian reggae artists, his message is about Jewish religion, hardly a comparison to Rastifarian values.

also he talks a lot about the similarity to his lyrics and rastifarian lyrics, they are both very happy and uplifting...
