@romanallen I did have a Syrian Hamster named Punkin. She was my pride and joy, however.. she was an escape artist and got murdered by a cat who no longer with us (thank god). I miss her. =(

@romanallen If you go to PetSmart, they have plastic, safe wheels for large hamsters. I have 14 hamsters and I know they carry those wheels.. NEXT EXCUSE pls!!!!

Its not that bad to make the hamster work for some food. In the wild they run several kilometers per night to collect food, in captivity they get all their food in front of their nose, making them understimulated and bored.

@romanallen Wodent Wheels, or comfort wheels by superpet. Both come in 8 and 12 inch sizes and the comfort wheels can be found at petco and petsmart, and are reasonably priced. Also they are both much safer than wire wheels.

@romanallen 20 gallon long, minimum. The cage you currently have would be acceptable for a dwarf hamster who is yet not an adult.

Also, softwood beddings such as Pine(which is in this video) are very harmful for your hamster. Softwood beddings have aromatic oils that can irritate your hamsters lungs. Apsen bedding(is a hardwood) is much safer or a hamster, and there is no cost difference.

@romanallen a right cage for a syrian hamster is 60 x 40 cm AT LEAST and a running wheel shoud be 20 cm or even bigger!

i did the same thing to my hamster too. it's just for a practise, you know. to teach him how to stand up in two feet properly.

i'm guessing u dont own a hamster. hamsters can drop up to 1-2 feet without a single bump. falling over backwards is nothing!

Have you ever heard about hamsters which broke their legs when felt from any non significant altitude? The problem is that hamsters can't measure altitude, so they jump even if it's danger for their health.

Too small of a cage (I suggest making a tub one, they're really cheap to make, search hamster tub cages or something of that sort on google) and the wheel should be a closed one - where there are no openings that the hamster's feet can fall through and they could hurt themselves.

Just suggestions for a happier hamster.

Thank you very much for detailed comment but I took this video about 6 month ago and this cage (temporary) was replaced with new and big one. The wheel can't be closed because it's Syrian hamster and it's too big for closed wheels. In any case now she has another and much bigger wheel. I've read a lot before I bought hamster, so trust me, she is fine ;-)
