What that glorified dancer Madonna probably would have liked to have been in an ideal world but accepted the second prize of fame, fortune and the adulation of an empty consumer generation.
I was lucky enough to see Lene and the band at Metro in Chicago in 1983.This was the play list:. 01. Savages 4:11 02. Sister Video 4:58 03. Joan 4:06 04. Faces 3:40 05. It's You, Only You (Mein Schmerz) 4:32 06. Too Tender (To Touch) 4:38 07. Say When 3:08 08. New Toy 4:07 09. Maria 3:05 10. Bird Song 5:05 11. Lucky Number 4:42 12. Angels 3:40 13. Blue Hotel 4:31 14. Rocky Road 4:23
This pop gem seems to have more staying power over the years than her other songs, which is a testament to Thomas Dolby's talents. While not in the same category as Lennon/McCartney or Jagger/Richards I wish Dolby/Lovich had produced more fantastic tuneage.
I thought that was Thomas Dolby in the back on keys but reading that he wrote the song was the clincher. This song sounds so much like his other stuff it is very recognizable.
@TheBlitz1 I disagree that New Wave was not original. Moreover, not all New wave was good, but I would not make a comparison to hippies. Hippies were the most spoiled and selfish generation of the 20th century...hopefully they will die off fairly quickly. I would compare hippies to today's "Hipsters", another pathetic yet arrogant social blight.
All of you that whine about Lady GaGa's style can suck on GaGa's and Lene's vagina! You just want to find a new reason to hate. You're so lame. Aside from you, idiots, the song is wonderful ♥ ^^
cosycorp Blast from the Past !! LUV the footage from waaaay back !!!! wish the sound could be overdubbed a little cleaner though ;) Cheers ! Verruckt Lene !!
Rodney Bingenhimmer from Rodney on the Roq show sunday nites on KROQ 106.7 fm, Los Angeles...would play her music along with all the great 80's underground music that the normal pop stations would ignore of were too afraid to play. GOD bless LA. , the 80's and KROQ....(ps kroq and the music sux now)
Lene was so bad ass! I absolutely loved this song when it came out so when I heard an ad for an album from some guy named Thomas Dolby "...from the writer of New Toy..." I didn't even wait to hear anything from it. I just went out and bought it. I have been the biggest Dolby fan ever since!
love it! how cool that Thomas is in the video? Saw him in concert in Seattle for The Flat Earth tour.... love this song & yes, he is a genius. Lene was alternative before there was alternative, along with Siouxsie Soux and Laurie Anderson.
@Gevalle808 - you're right - it was an era when European (non-UK) artists were definitely well represented in the US. Kraftwerk, Falco, Trio and Nena are a few more I can think of. The 80's were really cool - when MTV really represented music and brought us artists we wouldn't hear on American formula radio otherwise. If only KJet and KYYX (Seattle) lived on.....
.. 30 years ago, visionary Pop Goddess Lene Lovich described our current global consumer madness. Lady Gaga is an extension (or maybe a bad copy) of work that came before her 15 minutes of fame.
@hlegister724 Lady Gaga does not follow Lene Lovich's style at all. Not sure where you got that notion. Lady Gaga pretends to have a unique style, but she's really just a pretentious twiddling phony.
@dakwonju : absolutely, Gaga has contrived a superficial following, blown up be tacky media hacks. Lene Lovich had talent and looks and not a slice of meat to be seen ! :-)
Ah, the 80's, when music and art came together and the bands could actually play their instruments with some meaning and feel, and it was FUN ! dang I miss that time !
I was fortunate enough, and old enough to see Lene live in several venues in NYC back in the day. A truly great time was had by all. A real trailblazer decades ahead of her time. This Lady burned a long time before the MAN ever struck a match.
@oddothepainter Agreed. Saw her in her hometown of Detroit and in Chicago where I met her and Les after the concert, and they were just so sweet! Great performer, just love her.
@jeng3000 Exactly. And she knows very well who Nina Hagen, Toyah Wilcox, Kate Bush, Siouxsie Sioux, Strawberry Switchblade, Hazel O'Connor, and Alla Nazimova are, too. I appreciate Lady Gaga, but, her look, her visual representation is NOTHING new.
Strange the way lesser more lightweight artists seemed to benefit from the groundwork laid down by superior ones, Madonna & Cyndi Lauper (to a lesser extent) benefitted from Lene Lovich as U2 did from the Clash.
Lene Lovich is goddess but there's just something wrong with a video that appears live when it's clearly the album cut that's playing. The lip synch isn't isn't even close. Where is baldie?
this lady is so wacky, a great lady great song. anyone who loves Lene should check out NINA HAGEN also check out Lene Lovich song called "Dont kill the Animals" BRILLIANT
@Swimcat65 good catch he wrote this song for her too. I had the ep of this song back in the 80's cause my older sister had it and gave it to me cause i loved this song.
Ah, yes! This takes me back to my youth (born 1965). Anyway, I may be the only one with this opinion, but I believe that Lady GaGa is continuing the tradition started by Lene Lovich, Wendy O'Williams, Nina Hagen, Madonna..etc
Wow! This girl is a walking, talking party. I remember her back in my San Fran days in the 70's and early 80's. That world was EXCACTLY like her then The present generation can only look at this and imitate, which is what subsequent years have done. But, alas, the party has to end sometime. The present day extended party is tired; and it's time to go home. It will never be like it was then. I loved watching this....
This song perfectly defines the ethos of 1980s materialism. It does so standing at one end of the decade...with Brett Eston Ellis's novel "American Psycho" at the other end, perhaps.
The only thing more astounding than the materialism of the 80s was the fact that it only intensified in the 90s and 00s...
Never heard this before, but it's cool. And I really can't see the similarities between this and material girl other than the synth! We need to show this to everyone who thinks Lady BlaBla's original. I love lucky number.
@mrJimCharles Tom Dolby played in Lene's band before he made his first album. Justin Hildreth (drums) and Mark Hayward Chaplin (bass) - who were at the time Lene's permanent band, played on Golden Age Of Wireless. Les Chappell (guitar) and Lene sing on it. Lene's full time keyboard player was Dean Klevatt. New Toy was written specially for Lene by Thomas Dolby. I think her band probably went elsewhere when Stiff delayed the album New Toy should have been on for two years.
@basemann42 When the video for "Lucky Number" was released in 1979, the thing that caught my attention (of course, after Lena herself) was the guitarist with a shaved head. That was unusual at that time. And he looks the same in this clip, too - ahead of his time.
Lene Lovich was cool, and in 1980 extremely hot without the get up. However, Her music always sounded to me like they listened to missing persons then reproduced it note for note then mixed it slightly differently. Someone mentioned dolby and OH! ,wait a minute, thats explains it. I dont blame her, it was more common then before the internet and Dolby was an engineer, trained to go with what works, not an artist compelled to create a new paradigm.
You are so right pizzaspy, the intro is superb and this song so perfectly imbodies what was such a great time for those of us who got to enjoy the musicial 80's with a front row seat ! Miss those days *sigh*
This song cracks me the fuck up...because it is so representative of the material girls. New Toy......What does a Jewish American Princess do with her asshole every day? She sends him to work. Need a new toy---ohwee-oohhh.
This girl is a walking, talking party. I remember her back in my San Francisco days in the 70's and early 80's. That world was EXACTLY like HER then. The present generation can only look at this and imitate, which is what the subsequent years have broought us... imitations. But, alas, the party has to end sometime. The present day extended party is tired, and it's time to go home. It will never be like it was then.. I loved watching this....
Wow/what a gem...never saw this. Anyone notice Thomas Dolby playin keys in the Grey suit and Lennon specs...he wrote songs for Lena before he hit it big.....well big for 83...now he's a half a BILLIONAIRE...thomas invented the ringtone!
The OYYSSEY ? OMG !!.. I used to go dancing there in the early 80's !! Lived in West Hollywood... And I definitely remember hearing her music ... That was place as f***ing awesome! The IN place for those who were under 21.. ( which I WAS until 82) What a blast we had dancing to her songs and other great dance hits/ groups back then ....
A super great concert at Magic Mountain (though the show I saw was for "No Man's Land")... ***She yodels like my mother. I love Lene Lovich! Thank you for posting this vid!!!

No, but the nice people at Dolby had certain quarrels with him adding that name to his birth appelation. ;)

Dolby supported Lene on her US Tour, that's where he met her and was impressed with her musical style, therefore he wrote this for her!

Lene's best song. The true 1st in female New Wave and where many of the female performers today still get their ideas from!
