  • What that glorified dancer Madonna probably would have liked to have been in an ideal world but accepted the second prize of fame, fortune and the adulation of an empty consumer generation.

  • cool, takes me right back to the fun times times in 81

  • Nutty Lene, saw her in Aberdeen back in the day.

  • Got to see her in 1980@ The Mabuhay Gardens in San Francisco.

  • I have a serious crush on Lene here. Remember hearing this all the time on KROQ.

  • I was lucky enough to see Lene and the band at Metro in Chicago in 1983.This was the play list:. 01. Savages 4:11 02. Sister Video 4:58 03. Joan 4:06 04. Faces 3:40 05. It's You, Only You (Mein Schmerz) 4:32 06. Too Tender (To Touch) 4:38 07. Say When 3:08 08. New Toy 4:07 09. Maria 3:05 10. Bird Song 5:05 11. Lucky Number 4:42 12. Angels 3:40 13. • ... and that is Thomas Dolby on the keyboards..

  • Great Song created by the famous Thomas Dolby !!!! I imagine Thomas singing it.

  • I loooooooveeee it!!!!!

  • it only gets better after each listen.

  • Takes me back to New York when i was in junior high and my parents were partying at Studio 54!!!Great memories!!

  • "I've got to have the stereo.. a couple of deletions." Brilliant.

  • This pop gem seems to have more staying power over the years than her other songs, which is a testament to Thomas Dolby's talents. While not in the same category as Lennon/McCartney or Jagger/Richards I wish Dolby/Lovich had produced more fantastic tuneage.

  • I saw Thomas Dolby live in the 80's and she came out and performed this song. Great moment.

  • The melody is great and the beat is insane... just like almost every production of Mr Robertson !

  • she's hot!!!

  • She blinded me w/ her new toy.

  • 347 people never got a new toy.

  • Lene is cool!!! love this song!!!

  • Just amazing! Lena at her best.., oh eeeoh!!!

  • I think at 2:40 it appears that she may have missed her lip sync. Either way, it is a great performance.

  • that is Thomas Dolby on the synth

  • Gosh not heard this for like 30 years...........Lene's stage persona is kind of a mix of a female Johnny Rotten/Gary Numan, IMHO.......

  • I thought that was Thomas Dolby in the back on keys but reading that he wrote the song was the clincher. This song sounds so much like his other stuff it is very recognizable.

    )-(

  • Ah Lene, you are still a goddess to so many of us... I only hope you realise that. Pop would have been so different.

  • That sure looks like Thomas Dolby on keys....

  • @thenewfbi Good catch, that is Mr. Dolby. He also wrote the song.

  • loving Thomas Dolby on keys here :)

  • The only two songs that I really like from Lena (New Toy and Lucky Number).

  • Wow. That is a crowd I would never expect to see at a LL concert. Really talke a look at them, very, very top 40.

  • That is what you call TALENT and ORIGINALITY.

  • @cythera431 theres nothing original about new wave

its just neo-hippies trying to separate themselves from retro-hippies

  • @TheBlitz1 I disagree that New Wave was not original. Moreover, not all New wave was good, but I would not make a comparison to hippies. Hippies were the most spoiled and selfish generation of the 20th century...hopefully they will die off fairly quickly. I would compare hippies to today's "Hipsters", another pathetic yet arrogant social blight.

  • IT LOOKS LIKE THOMAS DOLBY PLAYING KEY BOARDS ON THIS SONG..

  • @steinermanjoe Cuz it is!

  • @steinermanjoe

It IS thomas dolby playing keyboards on this song. He wrote this song and he plays the keyboard part for it and he's awesome!!

  • All of you that whine about Lady GaGa's style can suck on GaGa's and Lene's vagina! You just want to find a new reason to hate. You're so lame. Aside from you, idiots, the song is wonderful ♥ ^^

  • cosycorp Blast from the Past !! LUV the footage from waaaay back !!!! wish the sound could be overdubbed a little cleaner though ;) Cheers ! Verruckt Lene !!

  • What . . . was that?

  • Before Lady GaGa there was Lene Lovich!

  • Rodney Bingenhimmer from Rodney on the Roq show sunday nites on KROQ 106.7 fm, Los Angeles...would play her music along with all the great 80's underground music that the normal pop stations would ignore of were too afraid to play. GOD bless LA. , the 80's and KROQ....(ps kroq and the music sux now)

  • CRAZY AVANT GARDE 80'S POP THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES

  • if you don't like this, then fast forward through the 80s until you get to Nirvana

  • i would love live my life with a women like her

  • Lene was so bad ass! I absolutely loved this song when it came out so when I heard an ad for an album from some guy named Thomas Dolby "...from the writer of New Toy..." I didn't even wait to hear anything from it. I just went out and bought it. I have been the biggest Dolby fan ever since!

  • love it! how cool that Thomas is in the video? Saw him in concert in Seattle for The Flat Earth tour.... love this song & yes, he is a genius. Lene was alternative before there was alternative, along with Siouxsie Soux and Laurie Anderson.

  • @chicvibe1 Don't forget Nina Hagen.

  • @Gevalle808 - you're right - it was an era when European (non-UK) artists were definitely well represented in the US. Kraftwerk, Falco, Trio and Nena are a few more I can think of. The 80's were really cool - when MTV really represented music and brought us artists we wouldn't hear on American formula radio otherwise. If only KJet and KYYX (Seattle) lived on.....

  • to think that this song were only a jammin did by Thomas Dolby...What a genius were the man!

  • .. 30 years ago, visionary Pop Goddess Lene Lovich described our current global consumer madness. Lady Gaga is an extension (or maybe a bad copy) of work that came before her 15 minutes of fame.

  • Now I know where I recognized Lady Gaga's style from....LOL!!!!

  • @hlegister724 Lady Gaga does not follow Lene Lovich's style at all. Not sure where you got that notion. Lady Gaga pretends to have a unique style, but she's really just a pretentious twiddling phony.

  • @dakwonju "pretentious twiddling phony"...and that's putting it nicely!!

  • @dakwonju : absolutely, Gaga has contrived a superficial following, blown up be tacky media hacks. Lene Lovich had talent and looks and not a slice of meat to be seen ! :-)

  • What's interesting is that the "alt goth chix" all try to look like this now and I wonder how many of them even know who she is.

  • "I'm sick of the Hoover!" definitely an original look...

  • Where is the original NEW TOY that used to show on MTV?

  • I saw her in concert once... well I saw her yellow plaits - all the tall people stood in front of me. I loved her! This brings back memories.

  • Ah, the 80's, when music and art came together and the bands could actually play their instruments with some meaning and feel, and it was FUN ! dang I miss that time !

  • Comment removed

  • I love her !! I just twisted up a spliff and got me a beer and I am going to listen to more of her stuff.

  • her eyes are doing some crazy things...

  • I was fortunate enough, and old enough to see Lene live in several venues in NYC back in the day. A truly great time was had by all. A real trailblazer decades ahead of her time. This Lady burned a long time before the MAN ever struck a match.

  • @oddothepainter Agreed. Saw her in her hometown of Detroit and in Chicago where I met her and Les after the concert, and they were just so sweet! Great performer, just love her.

  • AND she discovered Thomas Dolby! :-D

  • @ReidOriginals I might (without actually, you know, researching it) argue that Dolby discovered himself.

  • Does Gaga even have a heart? With such music, I thought she just has a greed box.

  • LADY GAGA EAT YA HEART OUT!

  • @1starryeyedkid ladygaga doesn't care of lene lovitch...neither you LOL

  • @tresoq I'm willing to bet Lady Gaga knows very well who Lene Lovich is...

  • @jeng3000 Exactly. And she knows very well who Nina Hagen, Toyah Wilcox, Kate Bush, Siouxsie Sioux, Strawberry Switchblade, Hazel O'Connor, and Alla Nazimova are, too. I appreciate Lady Gaga, but, her look, her visual representation is NOTHING new.

  • @keithdeweese RIGHT!!! CUZ DALE BOZZIO CALLED AND SHE WANTS HER LOOK BACK!!!! Lol

  • look at them "skankin" lol , makes me wanna dance

  • I love this song! Mitica Lene!

  • I always felt like Lene was the unseen Evil member of Strawberry Switchblade :L Love this song <3

  • I love the Sequential Prophet 5! But then again, I would since I'm a synth nerd.

  • Lene ROCKS..STILL!!!

  • Strange the way lesser more lightweight artists seemed to benefit from the groundwork laid down by superior ones, Madonna & Cyndi Lauper (to a lesser extent) benefitted from Lene Lovich as U2 did from the Clash.

  • Haven't heard this in years this lady has some eyes and what about the blue suit 0:33 real 80's stuff.............great find cheers cosycorp

  • @hungryherbie

Yeah, that's Thomas Dolby right before he hit with the first ep-that still has the best version of One Of Our Submarines on it :)

  • @MemoryVendor Cheers for info I found that track by Thomas Dolby and not bad for the first time hearing it ...thanks

  • @hungryherbie ----- blue suit is Thomas Dolby

  • @Muddyrich your right cheers

  • thomas dolby co wrote this song and is playing synth in this clip

  • @snoopiesdad Good Eye!! Blinded me with science came soon after.......

  • keep up the good work!!!...

  • oh to go back to that time again!

  • @scanner1133 Take me with you

  • Great song from a great singer from a great time to be alive! Thanks Lena.

  • very hot love her look..80s fricken ruled

  • One of the best songs Thomas Dolby ever wrote

  • Thomas Dolby on Keyboards!!!

  • @Lucvanacker he WROTE it

  • ¡Súper clásico de los 80's!

    Super classic from 80's!

  • The guitarist on the left, isn't he the lead singer for Squeeze?!? Is he guesting?

  • Great song! I was never a fan of the shows that had the artists lip synch, though.

  • Thomas Dolby on keyboards...

  • Comment removed

  • @blheron Best synthesizer player ever

  • "........IM SICK OF THE HOOVER!!"

  • Love her...I will always say she was Betty Page's doppelganger...with a different style, of course ;).

  • 1981. Listening to this song on cassette, while driving my black 454 4-speed Vette. Fast times.

  • So much fun brings back memories, gaga who?

  • I want a new Toy...........

  • Lene Lovich is goddess but there's just something wrong with a video that appears live when it's clearly the album cut that's playing. The lip synch isn't isn't even close. Where is baldie?

  • this lady is so wacky, a great lady great song. anyone who loves Lene should check out NINA HAGEN also check out Lene Lovich song called "Dont kill the Animals" BRILLIANT

  • Thomas Dolby on keyboard! I think he wrote this song too....I think.

  • @bleaufire He did write it.

  • Look! It's Thomas Dolby on the keyboards!!

  • @Swimcat65 good catch he wrote this song for her too. I had the ep of this song back in the 80's cause my older sister had it and gave it to me cause i loved this song.

  • Ah, yes! This takes me back to my youth (born 1965). Anyway, I may be the only one with this opinion, but I believe that Lady GaGa is continuing the tradition started by Lene Lovich, Wendy O'Williams, Nina Hagen, Madonna..etc

  • So cool to see this after all these years !

  • Now you have Lady Gagme ripping of Madonna who was ripping Lene off!

  • Wow! This girl is a walking, talking party. I remember her back in my San Fran days in the 70's and early 80's. That world was EXCACTLY like her then The present generation can only look at this and imitate, which is what subsequent years have done. But, alas, the party has to end sometime. The present day extended party is tired; and it's time to go home. It will never be like it was then. I loved watching this....

  • Not only is this a great song, but she's fucking beautiful. I think I'm in love.

  • Not a stretch to figure Madonna to be familiar with Lene Lovich. After all, they're both from Detroit.

  • This song perfectly defines the ethos of 1980s materialism. It does so standing at one end of the decade...with Brett Eston Ellis's novel "American Psycho" at the other end, perhaps.

The only thing more astounding than the materialism of the 80s was the fact that it only intensified in the 90s and 00s...

  • Sometimes you make feel nothing at all!!!!! Great song!

  • Never heard this before, but it's cool. And I really can't see the similarities between this and material girl other than the synth! We need to show this to everyone who thinks Lady BlaBla's original. I love lucky number.

  • @VioletSpanxx Point taken!

  • awesome - thanks for posting- cannot find this song anywhere

  • So this is basically the band on The Golden Age of Wireless?

  • @mrJimCharles Tom Dolby played in Lene's band before he made his first album. Justin Hildreth (drums) and Mark Hayward Chaplin (bass) - who were at the time Lene's permanent band, played on Golden Age Of Wireless. Les Chappell (guitar) and Lene sing on it. Lene's full time keyboard player was Dean Klevatt. New Toy was written specially for Lene by Thomas Dolby. I think her band probably went elsewhere when Stiff delayed the album New Toy should have been on for two years.

  • i am friends with jamie heyward-chaplin, marks son.

  • is that thomas dolby on keyboards? i saw lene the same year i saw nena hagen lol

  • is that thomas dolby on keyboards? i saw lene the same year i saw nena hagen lol

  • @mangin23 thomas dolby made this song!

  • A billion times more PHABULOUS than Lady Gaga! I saw Lene and Tanz Waffen at Masquerade and they ROCKED!

  • Weird thing here is that the bass player and guitarist could come from 2010 as their look is the height of fashion now.

  • they went back 29 yrs.

  • @basemann42 When the video for "Lucky Number" was released in 1979, the thing that caught my attention (of course, after Lena herself) was the guitarist with a shaved head. That was unusual at that time. And he looks the same in this clip, too - ahead of his time.

  • @hebneh He still looks the same now really...

  • A billion times weirder than Lady Gaga.

  • Absolutely!

  • Yeah and a billion times better.

  • real new wave!

  • Love Lene!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Studio 47 & House Parties in the 80's! I love this song!

  • Lene Lovich was cool, and in 1980 extremely hot without the get up. However, Her music always sounded to me like they listened to missing persons then reproduced it note for note then mixed it slightly differently. Someone mentioned dolby and OH! ,wait a minute, thats explains it. I dont blame her, it was more common then before the internet and Dolby was an engineer, trained to go with what works, not an artist compelled to create a new paradigm.

  • @solerso68 This is from '81. Missing Persons' debut was from '82.

  • Dream on. Dale & Lene arent the same. Try glasses and hearing aids

  • @JuanOmegaIota

maybe lena has a hearing aid and some bi focals i can use

  • omg Thomas Dolby lol.

  • catchy tune as hell!!

  • Had to buy the MP3, sure miss this tune.

  • Check the keyboard player is Thomas Dolby.

  • @Iamlebwol He wanted to make sure it was done right. He wrote this song after all!

  • +boy george=love?

  • Wow! Ottimo!

  • This is the best song intro ever...freaking impeccable

  • You are so right pizzaspy, the intro is superb and this song so perfectly imbodies what was such a great time for those of us who got to enjoy the musicial 80's with a front row seat ! Miss those days *sigh*

  • This song cracks me the fuck up...because it is so representative of the material girls. New Toy......What does a Jewish American Princess do with her asshole every day? She sends him to work. Need a new toy---ohwee-oohhh.

  • Now, this IS music!!

  • the folks at studio 54 didn't know what they were in for when Lene showed.

  • Madonna's "Material Girl" is basically a ripoff of this -- and is a much lesser song.

  • @SDChargersForever . Bullshit.

  • @SDChargersForever Sorry don`t hear that !

  • @SDChargersForever I've always thought this!!!:)Maadonna always taking/stealing ideas from others more talented and original then she is!!!!!!!!

  • @SDChargersForever

This girl is a walking, talking party. I remember her back in my San Francisco days in the 70's and early 80's. That world was EXACTLY like HER then. The present generation can only look at this and imitate, which is what the subsequent years have broought us... imitations. But, alas, the party has to end sometime. The present day extended party is tired, and it's time to go home. It will never be like it was then.. I loved watching this....

  • @SDChargersForever I am not sure Material Girl even qualifies as a song

  • thomas dolby did not invent the dolby noise reduction system.

  • No, but the nice people at Dolby had certain quarrels with him adding that name to his birth appelation. ;)

  • Wow/what a gem...never saw this. Anyone notice Thomas Dolby playin keys in the Grey suit and Lennon specs...he wrote songs for Lena before he hit it big.....well big for 83...now he's a half a BILLIONAIRE...thomas invented the ringtone!

  • I heard he was the one that invented the dolby surrond sound thing im not sure if thats true though.

  • Dolby supported Lene on her US Tour, that's where he met her and was impressed with her musical style, therefore he wrote this for her!

  • The OYYSSEY ? OMG !!.. I used to go dancing there in the early 80's !! Lived in West Hollywood... And I definitely remember hearing her music ... That was place as f***ing awesome! The IN place for those who were under 21.. ( which I WAS until 82) What a blast we had dancing to her songs and other great dance hits/ groups back then ....

  • Wow! Awesome!

  • What about the other 2:22 minutes?

    Anyone remember Punishment of Luxury?

  • the first 35 seconds of this is absolute perfection

  • Im in love

I think bjork stole this song idea and some of this personality.

  • How I played this album over and over on vinyl no less.... yikes. Really excellent, a magical time in music.

  • A brilliant performer and songwriting team, Lene and Les!

  • A HUGE HIT at ODYSSEY1 (back in the day)...

A super great concert at Magic Mountain (though the show I saw was for "No Man's Land")... ***She yodels like my mother. I love Lene Lovich! Thank you for posting this vid!!!

  • lol

  • Lene's best song. The true 1st in female New Wave and where many of the female performers today still get their ideas from!

  • This is so groovy, shows my age doesnt it. Oh well, c'est la vie.
