Trippy and all, but the message is unbelievable. Animals that show signs of the slightest intelligence are put in captivity and in a program designed to teach them how to read and sign - like with chimps. The notion that they would have these little human pets for so long without realizing that they were as innately intelligent as them breaks the fantasy.

@fringeelements I disagree. The original message was about the occupation of the then chekoslovakia by kommunist russia (that was the original message of the novel this is based on). Also remember that they are Alien, and have Alien thinking, and very arrogant. They assume humans cant possibly seriously revolt against them. The Aliens are the russian "Giants" understemating the pathetic "dwarf" humans (Chekoslovakian Nation). But I can definetly understand youre point.

Definitely better in French. It feels dumbed down in English. The tone and inflection of their voices is off because they aren't adequately reproducing the actor's emotional state of mind with every line.

@geekgirl45 that's because it is actually how the aliens speak. at least the adults. only the girl and her father talk with a sweet and natural tone and voice. i'm french, but this dub looks pretty good.

Back in 1990 I learned that the animation in this movie was done with frosted cels, which allowed colored pencils to be used for drawing and detailing all the characters.

I've wanted to see this film forever but never really got the chance.

Didn't expect the wild seventies soundtrack though, lol!

it's actually pretty fun to watch all of rene laloux's movies and wathc the details, the themes, the techniques he uses for every scenario, the people, the dialogues, metaphors and so on... makes it worth watching hundreds of times, and there is alwas somethign that surprises me, and I learn from such stuff :D Hope I'm not the only one though :P
