Very nice video indeed. The sounds that can be heard when a hurricane hits are extraordinarily impressive. I can tell you certainly have taken that into account when shooting the footage. Thanks for the posts!
...rode out Gustav in berwick...just over the bay from morgan city...eye passed with 959 millibars at 1730 UTC...68 kts[80 mph] recorded...not quite on the level of Andrew 1992 [cat3] but a good pounding nevertheless...
@stormtracker05 Thanks so much for watching the clip! Yeah, it's possible some of the instantaneous peak gusts got up as high as 110mph, but the highest recorded value I've seen so far was 103mph from another chaser's car-mounted anemometer. The highest official reports from land stations in Louisiana were mostly between 80-90mph.
@peteboy1113 It's absolutely wicked. South Louisiana native, what you are watching is even hard to imagine living through, the higher cats are absolutely spooky. It's worth it for the re-aquaintance with nature if not anything else. Very humbleing
I went through Katrina, in New Orleans, and that was a strong category 3. It was very eerie seeing things flying around and seeing waves rolling down the street.
most hurricanes in florida end up like this, lots of rain, lots of wind, power might go out... Tips: Have water and candles on hand. Every one i've been in, i haven't had to evacuate, went outside in some, love the rain :P. But these ones in LA...look pretty dangerous
Dude! You were in New Iberia there at 6:15 in to the clip. That is the Lowe's parking lot and is exactly where I was in the Chevy Tahoe. Greg Postel can be seen in his chase vehicle- he is from Kansas. Did you see the Tahoe? We had our wind tower set up over the at interchange where you got off of Hwy 90 to come in to the outskirts of New Iberia!
Excellent video indeed. I'll have to send you a copy of my 2008 DVD. Keep up the good work- hope to see you out there in 2009!
No way!!! We were all wondering who that was in the parking lot at Lowe's! We definitely saw you guys. What was the peak wind you guys recorded there...and overall during the storm? The DVD would be awesome, thanks so much! I'll send you a copy of my 2008 DVD too.
Say what you want about Morgan City but my mother had power 2 days after the storm places around Baton Rouge was powerless for over a month. MC was hit harder than us.
gustav really showed its teeth the day after he came thru lafayette la. 1 feeder band pawned tornado after tornado.very unique.the sun was out and funnels were passing everywhere.
OH MY GOSH! May I call you my hero?? I'm from Morgan City, and I happened to stumble across this video.. I am completely blown away by this. Thanks so much for posting this; it is amazing.
It's been awhile, and I simply wanted to congratulate you on capturing such fantastic footage during your hurricane "Gustav" intercept. As always, your photography and editing skills are outstanding! At some point, I hope to be able to post footage from my recent hurricane "Ike" intercept in Bacliff, Tx., as well as all the others I've documented during the past 5 seasons. Most important of all, I hope you are doing well, and I look forward to talking with you again soon.:)
Around 4:30 or so kinda reminds me of driving through one of Katrina's outer rain bands around Daphne, AL just as it was making its second landfall in southern Mississippi.
Intercepting the eyewall 3 times man, that's awesome! You're gonna have some great footage for your 2008 Tropical Season Chase DVD!!! Looking forward to it on the big screen.
Thanks Mike! The Gustav intercept was an incredible experience. And being able to go through an eyewall three times during a single landfall was a first for me!
AMAZING FOOTAGE, I figured Gustav was going to be bad, not a Katrina event (repeated), but i expected something like this, this is your best footage since 2005. 5/5 + FAVS!
Thanks Chris!!! The person you see standing out in the middle of it all is cameraman Chris Terrill, who was filming footage for the television production company he works for.
Surprising video Michael!! .. this so explicit way of being in the eye and of penetrating again in the eyewall is amazing .. the best video of Gustav, your team is located in the correct place... ;)
You're film of the winds back in Lafayette is almost better than I remember it being in person. And some of the gusts you got in the beginning are amazing. Awesome, awesome stuff.
Thanks Max!!! Some of those gusts we had in Lafayette were amazing...and this is the 'short' edit, the full version of my Gustav footage is 20 minutes long. It's cool that in such a short time, we've been able to intercept so many different storms. We've probably got more to come in the next few weeks too.
Thanks so much James!!! Gustav wasn't quite as violent as Sinlaku, but it was still fun. You need to come over to this side of the globe sometime... and I need to get over there too...haha.
Awesome footage! Love all of your stuff. One of these days I want to experience the power of a hurricane. Seen plenty of tornadoes but never been in a hurricane.
Amazing storm footage Michael. Is that you in the beginning of the video? First time I seen you in front of the camera if so. Great footage once again man!!!
Thanks Rob!!! After the weakening trend from the night before, we were really surprised at how strong it actually was the next day. The eyewall convection really got going on the west side and persisted throughout the whole landfall period.
