I remember being utterly enthralled by this as a young child in the mid to late eighties when my grandparents used to take me. Fantastic entertainment, although I have to confess I frequently sneaked in through a gap in the railings!
Lady Gaga, Take That, Jamie Olivers Wedding, Christina Aguillara, Maddona, we have designed special effects and fireworks for all these people, 25 years in the pyrotechnic and effects industry.........are Scarborough council interested in our ideas on how to save this tradition, bring it up to date, bring in crowds of folk again, and without losing it's charm, NO.
Good news for us locals. I saw the show this weekend, and though it's the same story, there was a marked improvement in the pyrotechnics and ship positioning. There was also a new ship, and for those of us who know about these things it is a Bismarck class battleship, though never refered to as Bismarck or Tirpitz in the commentry, HEAVEN FORBID! The Ark Royal did breek down though, and was left drifting in mid lake, totally ignored by an enemy submarine. PHEW!
@Trek001 Aye, seen it happen a few times Trek001. The enemy battleship that is chased away used to run for it under the footbridge, rather than back to the harbour, and we noticed it was settling lower and lower in the water as it fled. Just before it went under the bridge it rolled over and the crewman had to bale out. That was in the days before they lifted the tops off the ships at the end off the show, so the audience were left in no doubt as to how most of the ships were powered.
I own a special effects and firework company in Scarborough, the council don't want to know my company, they would rather 'buy in' fireworks from outside the town to provide concerts with fireworks throughout the summer, disgusted with them. As for Naval Warfare, I have the answers in generating more interest, wanting to save this tradition, achieving the crowd's once more...
It's disgusting how the council let the park go and they still get back handers. If you're a true pyro from scabby then they should use your expertise and keep the people coming in.
I can sympathise pyro. The council should use local firms, and take notice of suggestions to improve/update this show. It could be much better. I've lived in Scarborough all my life and love this show despite its decline. The 'hits' on the ships now make a phsss sound while the misses make a bang! The positioning of ships is rediculous, the submarine no longer dives and the roll mechanisms for 'sinking' ships often fails to activate. It needs a complete overhaul. Maybe by local enthusiasts. Mmm.
I could bring this show into the 21st century, bigger crowd's, much more spectacular, big 'underlining music score' instead of some badly narrated script, but Scarborough council are so set in their ways, sadly for people there's no chance of that ever happening, it's just going to go to ruin like the rest of this town.
It's shit and needs updating to gain popularity again, no show is the same, poor effects, badly presented, outdated pile of crap............
Scarborough council have no idea !
This wonderfull creation by the parks designer way back could be improved bigtime without spoiling the tradition, if only they cared, fact is they don't have a clue in running this, infact they don't know how to run Scarborough full stop !
Time stood still. I saw this in the 60's as a kid and walked the Cleveland Way recently and they were still doing it!! A hearty welcome to all our visitors to Scarborough from Germany.
I saw this show back in the 1960,s also. If I recall correctly the German battleship was called the Graf Spee....the name has been changed as not to offend German visitors. How wrong is that.....political correctness gone mad.
@mortegi I agree entirely. I saw this every year back in the seventies and no one ever saw it as being disrespectful. It was just fun. We've lost our sense of humour as a nation because of all these bleeding heart lefties.
When my grandad took me to see this in the 1960s, I was frightened that the ducks would be hurt by the bullets. He reassured me that they had bullet proof feathers.
lmfao!! grandads eh!! mine used to put sweets on a tree in his garden n tell me it was a rare gum drop tree i must have looked so stupid at school telling my teacher thats where sweets came from

And I was there yesterday and there weren't many people there. When I went as a kid you couldn't move in that park.

I always wanted to go to see one of these since I was little, I'm 16 now though so it might all seem a bit dated
would it be worth the trip?

Saw this live myself once. Trivialises the horrors of war a bit but they are only toys.
