Do I hear an oil drum bass sound? I guess so. Steve the Buck used the "Oil Drum Bass" preset in his works with furry musicians and bands from mid to late '80s.
this synth was the main stream of every kind of videogame or pop music in the mid 80's and 90's very good keyboard. like the roland d50 those keyboard have is own flavor.
It's from a 1983 BBC programme called "If I Had A Hammer"- I still have the original on VHS - the cryptic title refers to a comment made by someone in the programme
The JX8p does absolutely gorgeous strings. FM synthesis is better suited for percussive stuff, hard, edgy sounds and all sorts of bellish and metallic noises. Still, some of the DX string patches you can find on the internet are nice enough if you add a bit of chorus and reverb. They sit nicely in a mix and don´t take up as much sonic space as analog strings do which can be important if you have plenty of things going on at once. For Vangelis/Jarre type of strings though, go for the JX8p.
Detuning or unison is good on FM synths as they fatten the sounds and in some cases make the sounds better. I've always found unison makes FM sounds better and more impressive for pad sounds.
I've got both DX7 (II-D) and a D-50 and love them both, different architecture, different sounds, different uses but BOTH misunderstood in a modern context. Both are now misunderstood - forget the presets on both and use custom patches or make your own for real synth heaven. Both make good additions to a studio full of analog synths.
Check my latest upload for my DX7 II and JX-8P random playabout :)
I own two Yamaha DX7's (The Original DX7 and the DX7S) and two Roland D50's and I agree that they are both great synths for making your own patches on. The DX7 also sounds even more great when adding chorus, reverb and delay to some of the sounds once programmed.
Many pop hits from 1984 to around 1990 use the DX7 sound. There was a big backlash around 1991 in favor of both more modern synths and realistic instruments, and I feel this instrument needs to make a comeback on the airwaves.
Well, the DX7 and D-50 are two completely different beasts. You can't really compare them with each other. If you look at sound generation system and year of release (1983 and 1987) they differ completely, and they were never competitors in that way. In sales figures only.
Yeah, The DX7 is a great synth. Those who hate the DX7 are usually those who don't have any imagination and can't be bothered to program a synth anyway.

This is so typically 80's; those blinds and that sterile looking room.
In the middle of it is the DX7, the intsrument that shaped the 80's and was on every record from 1983 to 1987.
I really miss those days, when everything was new.

Interesting. My VHS copy of the programme doesn't feature this bit, so it must have been an edited repeat. Dammit!

Yeah like I mentioned Unison fattens the sound like chorus. I have that unison function of my Yamaha DX7S.

What really makes a chorus sound is fixed freq mode on a carrier

Explain where you see Konami Logo theme.

Look at the intro to any super nintendo game released by konami, and you will hear a similar theme.

yeah, I always add some effects to my DX7 as then you can level the playing field with synths that followed and see how great it really can sound. :)

No, but there's countless sounds you can get online and make yourself. Get MOTU's Unisyn to make as many as you want.
