The whole idea behind Alternative music, was to be an alternative to the mainstream status quo. Kurt wore this like a badge of honor and disparaged other bands for being corporate sell outs. Yet he himself signed to Geffen records and made music videos and played the mainstream corporate game. If any of the albums were 'mainstream' it'd of been Nevermind, but with a follow up like In Utero it shows that mainstream was no longer (if ever Nirvanas intent). Regardless of anything, artists will go to where the money is. Kurt died before he had the chance to actually sell out. In my opinion at least.
