How loud will thins amp get? I recently demoed a chicago 51 and I believe it is the same as this amp. Is this pushing 15 to 20 watts. I feel it may be to quiet for gigging with out being miked. I am looking to play in a medium room with a 4 piece blues combo, would it be loud enough as a stand alone unmiked harp rig?
I love and want Great tube tones but I have a real problem . I live in a attached house with many close neighbors . I desire a tube amp with good tone when it's played at very low volumes . Money is less of an issue . Any sugestions other than moving ? Thxs , Jerry .
I've got a 1953 version of this amp in my shop right now for a basic checkup. Other than the expected leaky paper capacitors, it's held up extremely well. Original build and parts quality was very good. This one has a 6SQ7 triode as the first gain stage vs. the 6J7 pentode in yours. Supposedly, this change was made due to problems with pentodes being microphonic. Has this ever been a problem in yours?
someday im gonna walk out my door and a 59 les paul and this amp are gonna be sitting in my lawn and im gonna take them inside and play them for the rest of my life
FINALLY! Someone playing something other than straight out blues. I'm getting sick and tired of people thinking they have to play BLUES through something old because its old. Nice playing man. And FINALLY someone actually playing the thing rather than talking about it through their whole video treating it like an old Coffee Table. lol Meant to played ! And you did it son!
they've made tons of improvements on amp designs. Do you realize how many boutique amp companies are out there making hybrid and completely new circuits? Like guitar companies, amp companies found what works and what doesn't. Sometimes things are done right the first time around.
Completely understood. And the quest for tone continues. Thanks.
You know, I (and I'm sure many others) , as many times as I've viewed & read this video, used to think you were being snobby (like, "my amp sounds better than yours") by saying Dont use this as a demo, your amp may not sound like this one. When in fact, its just the opposite. You are very kind, and informative. And a pretty decent player too(chuckle).
I been searching for one of these (Valco, National, Supro, McKinney, Oahu, and whatever other name they slap on these) for a while, and keep refering to this video for encouragement. Why do you say others may not sound like this one ?
I made that commend because this one has a reconed speaker which dramatically changes the tone. At the time I had a couple other Supreme amps with original-cone speakers and they sounded similar to each other, but different from this one. My conclusion was that the fresh speaker gave it a different response... which was darker, tighter, and a more focused mid-range tone... the original ones were looser feeling with a more pleasant wider frequency range (more highs and lows).
didn't jimmy page use a supro to record led zeppelin one? It sort of sounds like this on communication breakdown and good times bad times, though pages might be later than this one.
Sweet sounding amp though. I wish i could get my hands on one!!!!
I just read an interview with jimmy page, he used a supro on one, but someone "smashed it up" wile they were on touring. My guitar teacher said he used a vox a lot on two. Whatever man, your amp is still really cool
Great tone! I love the sound of a tube amp cranked. Even my bass amp is tube, it just sounds so much more natural. I'm not sure which tone I liked better, the strat or the les paul. Both were great in their own way. 5*, keep it up!
Cool amp, you know any good guitar amp repair specilaist? Its totally dry here in Colorado..Nobody knows shit, and Im too stupid to fix my own amp..Man, that tone is to die for..
sweet, im building a 5 watt valve amp with a 12 inch rola speaker i rescued from the scrap heap,
it uses 3 2ax7 tubes (one for gain)one el84 for the power side, mallory caps, dc supply to the heaters, ceramic sockets for the valves and a hammond 125cse output tranny, im looking to use a native (in our country) thats similar to oak as the speaker cabinet- can anyone reccomend a better wood?
Great Video, toneful. Are you the same skilback that posted a modded 5E7 Bandmaster homebrew circuit? If so, would you please post vids of that amp? Great tonemaster.
That lil bugger sounds great!

Holy crap :35-:42 what a tone!
Sometimes it sounds like a blancket on the amp but break up is unlike almost anything heard.
That it uses octal tubes and a field coil speaker has disrupted my quest for tone and I'm shifting directions.I'm both sad and happy.

at 35: till 1:00 its just OMG
i neeed! ( just bought a modern supro and god damn do they rock)
minibikedude04 2 years ago
FWIW, there's nothing in common between the old Supro amps and the new ones, except maybe the logo design.
skilback 2 years ago
i know that,
but the modern supro's are built like tanks.
Point to Point construction,
all tube design,
made by hand in america,
they are really something wonderful.

Cool... glad to hear you dig yours!

would u ever sell this amp? hahha
pretty sure i know the answer,
but just wondering

Fantastic Tone Man!!
I have a '61 Supro Super 1606 with an 8" Jensen and the tone is comparable to this, life is good with a supro....

i agree on the coolness. what riff is that @ about 32s? I recognise it but can't think of it.

Most likely, Jimmy used either the 1624T or the 1690T.
