  • Man this Katamari Democracy thang really has me curious. It keeps popping up. Great job Xeni and Jane! Fascinating work. Dancing is great, I bounced around the living room with my daughter jamming to Pendulum.

  • is that y facebk doesn't have the "dislike" button?

becoz the preconception of negative comments, make thing worse

  • she is so AWESOME.

  • She's a goddess.

  • super interesting research!!!

  • My Macbook Pro is bigger than yours.

  • No gen on youtube is false. There are several great comments, you just don't notice them as much as the negative ones.

I know this may start to look like a negative comments, but it's not, it's constructive and honest.

I love the work Jane does, and this is a good video. Thumbs up.

I don't know if it has been done, but it would be interresting to see the ratio of positive to negative comments on youtube represented as a variety of statistics.

Also, check out thumbs up to thumbs down ratios.

  • I love Jane McGonigal !!!

  • Removing the balance of positive and negative associations sounds like something you do in kindergarten, not the real world where decisions and opinions can be backs by more than trolls, but rather by people with experienced critical eyes. Unbalanced encouragement is childish, and leads people to make uninformed decisions about who they are and what in their fantasy they think they can do. Reality, facts, truth, these are the meters by which people should have the right to decide.

  • this woman is really great! i'd love to have the clarity of conceptualisation that she has.

  • Brilliant, couldn't agree more about the toxic environment on youtube too, sorry guys but you know it's true.

  • Yes we need better gaming, but we need less gaming, not more. I like her games based on oil scarcity and extinction, but I wonder what will be the cost of the masses getting off of oil, what will be the new resource scarcity (water!). I support her advocating openness but she doesn't seem to be thinking very deeply about the subject of status awareness that comes from humiliation. So there's a blip of happiness... but isn't there an overriding feeling of shame and inferiority?

  • Most games are about escapism and acting out our most immoral fantasies, like going on killing sprees. I support her game ideas that she presented @TED, but there's some troubling naivety in McGonigal's speeches.

  • Is that lady even attempting to listen?...

  • Video games especially mmorgs tend to feed your need for success. If you do what you need to do in a game you'll be successful and probably accepted and loved by the related community. Unlike the real life there is no risk. Video games can't make real life better, not in my life time. I seriously don't think they want the video games to enhance individuals socialization, after all they are supposed to medicate your mind so you don't worry about what's going on.

  • @rameyonwheels I agree 100% that MMOs feed the need for success, though I'm not quite sure what you're getting at past 'video games can't make real life better.' Perhaps the games themselves can't, but we can still learn from *how* games motivate people and then *apply those lessons to real life.* If we can figure that out, the goals of the game devs is irrelevant.

Also, imho, self-medication is a byproduct of a depressing life & the compelling nature of games, not a goal of the devs.

  • "i've been thinking about why so many people spend so much of their time in game worlds, what it is thats so engaging about virtual environments and game systems that is beating reality, and try and figure out if its a loosing battle, if we should make better and better gameworlds that are really good at distracting us from how alienated you are from your life, or should we take the lessons we've learned about engagement and happiness from games and stick it back in the real world."

  • Hands up who's alienating themselves from their life by being on the internet right now.

go on, you know you want to. no one is looking. go on. thats it.

    wow theres alot of you.

  • You have awesome video!
