is that jon on bass? or am i just making that up? lol i distinctly remember hearing him say somewhere that he did ALL of the guitar parts (Minus the solos).
In my opinion, if Jon took this version and had Matt re-sing it, used the choir from the original instead of this one, and added the piano intro, it would take this song fucking godly. I ask for too much...
I like the original better... It seems to have more energy. This version gets a little annoying because like all the notes are palm muted. In the original they palm mute the main riff and then they slide for the chords and it sounds cool.
@austinthefreak the reason is the drums and bass. they are both doing to same rhythm as the guitars, so a tighter, more powerful riff, but less layers. I personally love them both.
@austinthefreak the reason is the drums and bass. they are both doing to same rhythm as the guitars, so a tighter, more powerful riff, but less layers. I personally love them both.
its amazing how fanboyish iced earth fans are of the original song, open your ears and your minds people! Ripper Owens is a badass singer and this version is alot heavier to me than the original and is darker. there different versions. if you wanna listen to barlows version then shut the fuck up and listen to barlows version. your whining is solving nothing -_-
@starsiegeRoks Ripper/Barlow are both amazing vocalists and fans of the original "Barlow" tracks are well within their rights to have an opinion on the exact same songs being re-recorded with another vocalist despite how good he may or may not be. If you only ever heard the Ripper version and fell in love with the song based on that, you'd frown on the Barlow version later...
While I feel Ripper is technically a "better" vocalist, Barlow's baritone voice suits Iced Earth's material more.
@2000jago i understand where your coming from *im dont completely hate barlow i actually like his material in the crucible*. What gets me is when people come on here and unintelligently slam ripper. Instead of saying "hmm, this is different to me and i dont like it, so im going to simply say it isnt my cup of tea and move on" they yell about how ripper ruined the song, like their dog was hurt in the process of making this version.
@starsiegeRoks You make a valid point, but people who go on like that clearly don't know anything about the band or the reasoning behind vocalist changes over time. Ripper didn't just "appear" on the scene and re-make all Matt's songs. Jon Schaffer DECIDED that his voice was better for certain material in Matt's wake.
Despite what many people think, Iced Earth really is "The Jon Schaffer Band". Saying Ripper sux, is really saying Shaffer doesn't know what works best for HIS songs. Misguided.
and still.... THIS VERSION SUCKS!!! Not only because of the sucking voice of owens, no the ruined the whole song... Guitar, drums, everything is fucked up-.-
I cannot deny that Tim Owens is a fucking stellar singer. Some of the stuff he did on Framing gave me chills, but that being said I agree with most people on the fact that Matt's voice is Iced Earth. Ripper does a great job with this version though, a shame he's had to be the replacement for two monster vocalists or I'm damn sure he'd be even more successful.
how could you not like both versions, its just a song, variety is why I keep listening! people shouldnt be so stuck in the whole narrow minded, experiences are why life is worth living, Im glad I could experience this song differently, now I have another version to listen to, wow how many does this make now counting all the live versions as well that have made it to youtube?
oh..my..god.. that was amazing. i like how they didn't try to make a carbon copy of the song, owens added his own zazz, i guess. good job, iced earth.
Iced Earth have been brilliant up until the two newest albums... [although ten-thousand strong is epic] at this rate the next one's going to be called "Bored of the wicked"
Hopefully the next album, if there is one, will be a bit better... :)
you guys really should stop fellating this band. They were running out of steam by the time Something Wicked was written, and they were finally done after Horror Show. Jon Schaffer is the George Lucas of the metal world.
I don't know why everyone hates on Horrow Show, Its easily one of my favorites. Regardless His two albums after that were kind of meh.. But Crucible of Man? Epic as all hell! You really think that album was a flop?
Actually, I'm not hating on Horror Show. I was kind of vague there. Horror Show is probably my favorite album of the Barlow era. As for Crucible: what I have heard doesn't impress me.
I think as far as the singing goes, I like Tim's lower parts, but I love Barlow's higher parts. Tim can hit those notes, but he can't really do it Barlow style hahaha. Both great versions to an awesome song. Also didn't they detune it half a step lower, possibly for Owens vocals? Either that or just for a deeper sound, but I think it's tuned a little lower. Could be wrong on that though.
Good version, even though I like the original better. This is THE song Barlow carved his name in stone with for me. One of the best vocal performances in metal ever. The Ripper does a decent job though. It's different, but I still like it - just not as much :]
great song. i really enjoy both versions. sure the main difference is the vocal section. for me barlow is darker and melodic, and owens with his high notes feels more aggresive. both are in the top of the metal scene
no he didnt, dont fucking say ignorant shit like that, you dnt even know if he exists you dont even know if you exist, this song isnt even related to god, fucking gay clown.
i'm proud i can play this song on my guitar! also, this band carries on the legacy of iron maiden! i like it:D, one mooooore thing, the drum sound is so fuckin sweet! so pure, but stil raw, in a way.
Iron Maiden still very much carry the legacy of Iron Maiden for now :) agreed that one or two bands like Iced earth do a good job at it as well though.
actually there are, but none has the qualities of iced earth. that is because of jon schaffers high demands.. :-)
one hell of a rhythm guitarrist. the drums don´t fit too well, that´s true, but BOTH singers are perfect, they´re just different.
i can play this song too, on good days.. i have an injury on my right hand and galloping is somewhat difficult to do it most of the time. on good days i play iced earth all of the time, it just feels good to play their songs.. ;)
Yeah dude, it's really sad that bands like this don't get more recognition nowadays. Not just Iced Earth, but other good heavy metal bands that aren't hardcore. It's more or less the perfect genre, right between hardcore and power metal. *sigh* one can only dream.
I like this songs recording better, like the quality, the drums sound clear as a bell, but I dont think rippers voice can pull off this song like Barlow's, I sort of like Rippers voice better but I enjoy both singers, I especially enjoy the live version of this song.
all the barlow vs. owens stuff is stupid. they are both great vocalists. for the SWTWC story i do perfer barlow EXCEPT on Ten Thousand Strong. that song wouldnt be as awesome w/o Owens. also Owens did a great job on Glorious Burden. Im very glad barlow left before that. but im very pleased at his return and the plans to re-record Framing Armeggedon. but of course this includes 10000 strong. i can only hope for the best.
The only issue I have with the SWTWC songs are that IE got a singer with a higher range but dropped to baritone guitars, which I think suit Barlow MUCH better.
It's weird. I love Owens singing style, but it feels like all the albums he sang in, I didn't like at all. I much prefer the stuff Barlow sang, but I like to hear Owens sing a lot more.
i prefer the tone of the drums in this version, and Steele's solo. But I prefer Barlow's vocals, and the little piano bit in the intro of the original too, so the original wins :D but this is far from bad, Owens is an excellent singer
dude the original is from something wicked this way comes, like 5 years before this. This is Owens singing on this song. Barlow sings on the original on SWTWC
well you sure are prompt. anyway you just repeated what i said except for saying its the original. i know its owens. thats unmistakable. barlow has a few songs that fit his voice such as dracula but other than that i think owens is way better.
Hmm I'm not sure what this is about but lemme say this...This came after Barlow's version this version is beast :P, Barlow is a Better singer however can he pull off SW Part 1? probably not with the awesome Ripper Vibe but if you've heard songs off Burnt Offerings or Horror Show Barlow has got High and low notes and plenty of shrieking :P, Ripper is the Halfordy guy but Barlow is something of his own kind lol like a Halford conceived Baritone Talented indeed. 4 Octave wonder Barlow FTW :D
He didn't redo everything from Something Wicked This Way Comes onwards, that was his second to last album before he left after the initial recording of Glorious Burden, which was rerecorded with the then new singer Tim "Ripper" Owens. Barlow is credited as backing vocals on that album.
@cornboy111 That's how I feel. Mainly because Matt is like a godly being when he sings anything. I keep hoping for hope that Jon will re-release TGB with Matt singing because I would give anything for that.
That bass drum is tight. I mean, like Gavin Harrison tight! I really like this version, not so keen on the original. I think the degree of tightness does it for me.
too much palm muting, but the bass and drums are BAMF! They did a good job with a chorus, kind of an evil effect to it, outro kicked ass too. Atleast its not the same shit all over again, I can only headbang one at a time :)
The drum track in this version is definitetly superior to the other version, while the guitar is more melodic on the other version... For the signer, its a matter of personnal preferences.
This would've been a lot better if they kept the original rhythm, bass and drums. It's too much of a generic chug now, the drums kind of drowns out the guitar's character. It's basically nothing without Schaffer's original rhythm track.
Ripper's a great vocalist, he sang well here, but this version is ruined by the music behind it. Steele's solo is damn good though.
Although, since everyone else has taken a side- Barlow>Ripper.
I agree (The solo is tough). This version is good, but not great...but I never expected this version to pass the original. The original is just too damn good!
Wow what did they do to this song? I love Tim (And I know I'll get crap for this, but I think he is superior to Matt Barlow), but they ruined this song completely. As NolateM said, they took the melody - my favorite part of this song - right out of the guitars, and turned it into more of a "chugging". Too bad

Part of it is due to the fact that it was definitely meant for Matt, part of it is the mixing, and the way the main guitar riff was changed - they took the melody it and just did rhythmic guitar chugging. If there was a word describing the antithesis of enhancing something... I'd say they "dehanced" the song.
This version is better than the original. The drumming, guitars, bass, and RIPPING vocals; Perfect!

If there was a word describing the antithesis of enhancing something... I'd say they "dehanced" the song.

You cant compare the two. Ripper has better vocals but Matt has originality. I like both versions equally.

I Agree. Stop Comparing Matt and Ripper. There Two Different People. If You Dont like it then Dont Listen to it. Its Not a Hard Concept.

Awesome. Great version but the orginal version is way better. Still, Ripper did a great job. Hail Iced Earth.

Agreed

Definitely. Though Ripper got some bad heat while in Iced Earth, he still did a great job while in the band.
