Thanks so much for this vid, Rick. You changed the way I play the guitar. After 3 weeks of practice, I'm now playing legato cleanly and effortlessly :)
I have a rather unusual problem with my legato technique: when playing hammer-ons the hammered notes are distinctly louder than the first (picked) note.
Do you have any advice about that matter? If you do,please let me know.
@ Starling inspector. I need help! When I want to play a scale, my fingers tend to like come way off the finger board. I want to avoid this to be able to play faster. Any tips, thanks!
Awesome video starling inspector. Just out of interest what sort of tempo would you recommend starting at when practising this sort of stuff and secondly how many guitars have you broken trying to get the right sound?
Thx a lot! your lesson are very instructing, it would be cool if you did a lesson on your alternate picking with maybe tabs or pattern to really improve the quality and the speed. Anyway, cheers
Lol i love your lessons....(make more, 3 ain't enough.)
when you pick your way up the G Maj scale 0.o so so fast. tried and tried and got to about 3 quarters the speed you do it at my very very best. will keep practicing and hanging for your lessons.
This video was rather darkly lit so I really could not see what was being done very clearly.
I would be interested in what you do to coordinate both hands when picking fast. My left hand is much slower than my right hand. Do you find that true for most players?
hey, can i ask you, ..could you do that on a high/medium action guitar? im talking bout abit above 1/8 of an inch (about 5mm) on the 12th fret of the lowE.....i dont have any friends with low action and never wanted to go to a store to try. thanks!
I saw a friend of mine talking about this video and I can understand why he's so excited about it. It's certainly the best description of a legato technique I've heard and certainly refreshing to find an explanation and more flushed out version of a technique that I'd only had marginal information on. That being descending with hammer ons and pull offs. I'm going to get to work on this right away!
Fantastic playing!!Yes it's very technical but your style is soo very fluid and musical that the technical aspect of your playing is almost subliminal...Thank you for setting a nice goal to aspire to as a player.
very very very good!!! aggg...how difficult the guitar playing is...Both things...legato or pickin´...legato is better cause you don´t need both hands to make sound the note, but pickin´is better cause your left hand can move softer...aggggg...damn guitarrrrr
I'll be covering stuff like alternate/economy picking and loads of other stuff. I do use economy most of the time but I tend to use alternate if I'm after a particular sound.
Fantastic lesson Rick. I have ben working on some economy picking myself lately instead of picking every note. eg. Picking each string once (sometimes twice) while playing 3 or more notes on it. Is that Economy Picking or is it something else ?. It's kinda half legato-y for sure. If you could explain more about that someday it would be such a great help. How to make it work etc etc.
Cool insight into your thinking, conceptually bro! You always have such a light and fluid touch. Wouldn't work for my style though, since I use heavy gauge strings, and love to really smash those strings lol But then again, I'm not as fluid as you are :D Great lesson Rick! Have you thought about taking up Sean at infinite guitar up on his instructor search? You would be a great teacher :) (such a soothing accent as well :D )
Hey man! Thanks for watching Rich. I always value your opinion. What gauge strings do you use? I use 10's. I wouldn't say that about your playing man, it's as fluid as it comes. I have actually accepted an offer as instructor for Sean. Sounds like its gonna be a cool project.
Thanks man :) I use 0.11-0.52 Standard tuning. But I also love to a hard attack, since I can then also have the option of going softer, and using my fingers, and thus have a greater dynamic range. I have also accepted sean's offer :) So we're both onboard then :) Very cool!
That was really a really interesting look into your playing Rick. Would be great if you could do some more lessons, maybe on your picking hand (alternate and economy picking) and various techniques. Great Stuff! Cheers

Great lesson. One question for you:
Around 4:05 you say "hammer on the third finger at the same time"...what do you mean by that?
Thanks
Fretophonic 1 year ago
at 2:01 are you picking hard or is that the noise the pick makes when you play? i notice alot of guitar players make that same noise with their pick.

Yeah try not to roll the hand when you pull off and hammer on, it really helps get finger independence.

Your playing is sick, as a lesson though it was a waste of time, you don't tell people how to achieve this, you just demonstrate it.

Just a few points on the vid:
at 2:36 I should have said left hand hammers AND pull offs only(no picking) and not left hand hammers only.

Good lesson, finally somebody who displays the economy of motion principle, and actually knows how to show it.
