  • omg T_T what the hell is that ringing in the background... IT'S DRIVING ME INSANE >.<

  • great lesson, you're also a good teacher

  • you can't play fast if you're not relaxed, remember that newbies!!

  • Thanks so much for this vid, Rick. You changed the way I play the guitar. After 3 weeks of practice, I'm now playing legato cleanly and effortlessly :)

  • Found this really informative,thank you. =)

  • Great lesson!!

Please watch my video: "Damn Jam".

    Greetz, Fred Westra (Holland).

  • Great lesson. One question for you:

Around 4:05 you say "hammer on the third finger at the same time"...what do you mean by that?

    Thanks

  • at 2:01 are you picking hard or is that the noise the pick makes when you play? i notice alot of guitar players make that same noise with their pick.

  • Amazing lesson,simple and effective!

I have a rather unusual problem with my legato technique: when playing hammer-ons the hammered notes are distinctly louder than the first (picked) note.

Do you have any advice about that matter? If you do,please let me know.

  • @ Starling inspector. I need help! When I want to play a scale, my fingers tend to like come way off the finger board. I want to avoid this to be able to play faster. Any tips, thanks!

  • excellent lesson

  • 2 minutes of blah, blah, blah and then I fell asleep. :)

  • have to admit that did make me laugh.

  • I respect your sense of humour. Rock On Bro'.

  • Thank you :)

  • when do u use alternate picking and when do u not use it??

  • I LOVE THAT GUITAR!!!

  • Great. very usefull remarks.

    Thanks

  • great vid thanks

i love it helps alot with practicing!

  • Awesome video starling inspector. Just out of interest what sort of tempo would you recommend starting at when practising this sort of stuff and secondly how many guitars have you broken trying to get the right sound?

  • then do it without pulloffs :)

  • good lesson, thanks.

  • look like Shawn Lane technic

  • playing guitar to me is just like when i'm sprinitng on track. the more relaxed and the better my form, the better i perform.

  • Yeah try not to roll the hand when you pull off and hammer on, it really helps get finger independence.

  • thanks, great lesson! You're an amazing player!

  • Thx a lot! your lesson are very instructing, it would be cool if you did a lesson on your alternate picking with maybe tabs or pattern to really improve the quality and the speed. Anyway, cheers

  • Lol i love your lessons....(make more, 3 ain't enough.)

when you pick your way up the G Maj scale 0.o so so fast. tried and tried and got to about 3 quarters the speed you do it at my very very best. will keep practicing and hanging for your lessons.

  • This video was rather darkly lit so I really could not see what was being done very clearly.

I would be interested in what you do to coordinate both hands when picking fast. My left hand is much slower than my right hand. Do you find that true for most players?

  • very good lesson

  • I'm a big fan of your playing, and I enjoyed this video very much; great lesson, very informative. :)

  • Very clear, concise, focused lesson. Will be recommending this to pupils and friends alike! :)

  • Rick is one the best guitarist out there, thanks for your great videos Rick, very inspiring :)

    Ponch

  • hey, can i ask you, ..could you do that on a high/medium action guitar? im talking bout abit above 1/8 of an inch (about 5mm) on the 12th fret of the lowE.....i dont have any friends with low action and never wanted to go to a store to try. thanks!

  • holy hell

  • Thanks Rick ur Fantastic. I miss Shawn Lane Too.

  • Just a few points on the vid:

at 2:36 I should have said left hand hammers AND pull offs only(no picking) and not left hand hammers only.

  • Good lesson, finally somebody who displays the economy of motion principle, and actually knows how to show it.

  • I saw a friend of mine talking about this video and I can understand why he's so excited about it. It's certainly the best description of a legato technique I've heard and certainly refreshing to find an explanation and more flushed out version of a technique that I'd only had marginal information on. That being descending with hammer ons and pull offs. I'm going to get to work on this right away!

  • Fantastic playing!!Yes it's very technical but your style is soo very fluid and musical that the technical aspect of your playing is almost subliminal...Thank you for setting a nice goal to aspire to as a player.

    Keep up the great work.

  • What's that cricket chirping? Thanks.

  • summer in the South of France.

  • tnx rick , the lesson really help me !!

  • What model is the Ibanez and the Classical guitar that you play? By the way excellent playing on both and you have a very nice style and touch. JD...

  • on this one, looks like a JS series...

  • Thanks! Its an ibanez js2000 and the classical is a Michael Gee.

  • ive never heard of this guy before but he reminds me alot of shawn lane.

  • i miss shawn lane:(

  • very very very good!!! aggg...how difficult the guitar playing is...Both things...legato or pickin´...legato is better cause you don´t need both hands to make sound the note, but pickin´is better cause your left hand can move softer...aggggg...damn guitarrrrr

  • Excellent touch!

No need for Gain on 500 with tha touch & control.

  • I'll be covering stuff like alternate/economy picking and loads of other stuff. I do use economy most of the time but I tend to use alternate if I'm after a particular sound.

  • How about a phrasing lesson next, mate :D Your phrasing is also awesome

  • Fantastic lesson Rick. I have ben working on some economy picking myself lately instead of picking every note. eg. Picking each string once (sometimes twice) while playing 3 or more notes on it. Is that Economy Picking or is it something else ?. It's kinda half legato-y for sure. If you could explain more about that someday it would be such a great help. How to make it work etc etc.

    Great lesson mate, really.

  • Thanks for watching! I'm gonna post some more vids covering various things very soon.

  • Hey man, this really helps! Economy really is one thing ignored nowadays but point is that IS the secret for playing fast and sounding cleaner :D

  • thanks for the video ""rock!

  • Cool insight into your thinking, conceptually bro! You always have such a light and fluid touch. Wouldn't work for my style though, since I use heavy gauge strings, and love to really smash those strings lol But then again, I'm not as fluid as you are :D Great lesson Rick! Have you thought about taking up Sean at infinite guitar up on his instructor search? You would be a great teacher :) (such a soothing accent as well :D )

  • Hey man! Thanks for watching Rich. I always value your opinion. What gauge strings do you use? I use 10's. I wouldn't say that about your playing man, it's as fluid as it comes. I have actually accepted an offer as instructor for Sean. Sounds like its gonna be a cool project.

    Cheers Bro

  • Thanks man :) I use 0.11-0.52 Standard tuning. But I also love to a hard attack, since I can then also have the option of going softer, and using my fingers, and thus have a greater dynamic range. I have also accepted sean's offer :) So we're both onboard then :) Very cool!

  • Excellent lesson. More helpful than some of the more famous lesson videos, granted this is about one particular topic.

I will try that hammeron/pulloff technique you mentioned, it sounds really good!

  • Hey Rick,

are you using economy picking there?

    Chris

  • Rick that was great! You are a legend! Thank you and keep them coming!

    Chris

  • excellent lesson rick, can you do some on right hand technique?

  • Awesome lesson Rick!! Very helpful and information, like PaulXT said, more lessons like this would be cool. Thank you for this lesson too!!

  • That was really a really interesting look into your playing Rick. Would be great if you could do some more lessons, maybe on your picking hand (alternate and economy picking) and various techniques. Great Stuff! Cheers
