  • Hay un problema! sus ojos no son azules, SON CAFÉS! GRACIAS!

  • Favorite Steve Earle song.....if you can find just one favorite Steve Earle song.

  • This is what music should be. So many instruments in perfect harmony. You can see the memories in Steve's eyes, telling a story from the heart as much as singing a song. Beautiful.

  • Same @xxleandraxx1

  • is that a small guitar or is steve a gant?

  • @BigDaddyBiscuits1

It is a mandolin... though big for a mandolin.

  • @BigDaddyBiscuits1 You are correct, Steve is in fact a gant.

  • I'd drink to this song any day!!

  • fuking amazing tune an im a normal 22 year old belfast lad .... fuk all wrong with that song now .... appsolutley amazing ,,,, AINT SEEN NOTHIN LIKE A GALLWAY GIRL

  • the drummer is colin farrell with a pony tail

  • lol young james may on flute

  • tiene una mirada tan pacifica!

  • Brilliant

  • This is the journey of Irish music taken to America and then returned, bringing it all back home this is our story , sorry if you don't share it

  • @june4783 Brilliant words!

  • Ti amo Ada maty...

  • warrior poet

  • Drummer is pretty cute :35 or so, bet the girl would give him a twirl too...

  • Love Steve Earle's music. Thanks Steve!

  • no problem with his politics trying to protect ordinary folks in a difficult world through his work wish a lot more of the worlds artists would do it

  • This video is one of the best versions in YouTube of this song. Steve is soulful, several other musicians are also featured in a beautiful, underplayed balance of complementary sounds. Pros all the way.

  • Everybody playing looks like they're having so much fun. That's what music should look like

  • look at all the douche bags below arguing about total nonsense

  • Weather you agree with his politics or not- Steve Earle is the best living songwriter-long may he live (and write).

  • @beanroaster55 :) with the exception of Dylan

  • Not a cover band. Earle is the songwriter and the first to record this song.

  • @jwsamuel

I think MrSavage was talking about Mundy.

  • ohh, its a cover band.

  • what is mundy?

  • The drummer is Colin Farrell fo sho :)

  • a couple of the Galway Lads ain't looking too bad...............

  • I've seen her live and to be honest she's pretty disappointing, not very interesting and most of her fellow musicians did all the hard work, she just sat there playing that little instrument she plays.

  • does anyone know who the guy with the tin whistle is?

  • @Lucarius1 His name is Dan Gillis, he is Steve's manager, well former manager now, and I think had been with him for a number of years in various capacities.

  • @princessofhesse

Are you sure this is Gillis? I thought he was older. Steve is playing with the event band here.

  • @Lucarius1 :Nearly sure it's Colm O Snodaigh.

  • @Lucarius1 John Mcsherry, a fine Uilleann Piper!

  • 21 very sad people

  • The accordion definitely gives this song a New Orleansy type feel to it ... reminds me of good times :)

  • THE VIOLINIST LOOKS LIKE JAMES MAY...

  • @abc123easyas you probably meant to say the guy who plays the clarinet

  • @abc123easyas Yea lol think i was drunk at the time..

  • That violinist is hot!

  • Isn't that Mairead Ni Mhaonaigh of Altan on the fiddle? Sure looks like her.

  • @jmlennie Orkney is magical.. Was lucky enough to burn some British Air frequent flyer miles a few years a ago and take my wife and young children there. None of us will ever forget it -- burned in our minds and hearts forever...

  • A true gem -- thanks so much for posting this! Love Steve Earle -- authentic and brave. Very coincidentally, I'm sitting in New Jersey and wearing a Kerry Gaelic Football jersey as I type this. Galway Gaelic football's worst enemies :-)

  • This is awesome. Sharon Shannon is an amazing accordion player. Great to see Ray Fean on drums here. He is the brother of legendary Irish group Horslips, and has now replaced their original drummer. PS. Don't knock the Mundy version. It is hugely popular in Ireland, and anything that gets people listening to this music has to be a good thing.

  • love it and always will

  • what kind of music exactly is this?is it country, folk or celtic?

  • @bozanceto

    All of the above

  • @bozanceto

Celtic music is a form of folk music, so it is both. He is using Irish musical forms and instruments here, but I would say there is still a hint of country rhythms. And of course his Texas accent makes it sound more country to the ear. Also, traditional country music (as compared to contemporary pop country) draws on Celtic influences. blues, swing, Mariachi and other musical forms. The boundaries are not firm, and, more generally, Steve Earle is always crossing genres.

  • @nilradem Steve Earle says there are two kinds of music, "good and bad." We all know where his talent lies, no doubt. God bless Steve Earle.

  • @nilradem Steve Earle says there are two kinds of music, "good and bad." We all know where his talent lies, no doubt. God bless Steve Earle.

  • @nilradem My Friend. Where do you think country music comes from. The answer is the country of Ireland.

  • @22grena

In this context "country" refers to a specific genre that has evolved in the US in the last century. Celtic music (arguably more Scots than Irish) is one influence, and perhaps the most important, but far from the only one. The rhythms, specifically, are often more derived from Western swing, with its roots in Mexican Mariachi music. There are elements of African American old tme influence (guitar style in some cases and use of banjo) as well as other roots.

  • @nilradem Watch the Chieftains session with the great American bluegrass performers and you will see the evolution between country/bluegrass and Irisn music. BTW the Scots owe it all to the irish, they have nothing original, and that includes their whiskey and bagpipes.

  • @22grena

You are confusing bluegrass with country. They are related, but bluegrass is a different genre, which is more exclusively related to Celtic music. Traditional country music (as opposed to pop country) would not be what it is without the blues and swing as well as Celtic influences. I encourage you to read some musicology.

My point about "arguably more Scots" is more about the ancestry of people in the Appalachia than about the relationship between forms of Celtic music.

  • @nilradem

And even bluegrass gets the banjo from African American old time music/

  • @nilradem Well put

  • @22grena I actually find your comments about the scots rather insulting. The scots created many new things; the telephone, macadamisation, the bicycle, modern medicine, the NHS, we created the laws of electrodynamics, we industrialised Japan and we invented the bloody box most americans sit infront of for half their lives claming to know about country music. So I say screw you 22grena becuase you obviously no nothing about science, engineering, finance, industiralation, history, arts or MUSIC.

  • @AllyA799 Yes I'm am talking about music, not the many things Scots invented (an American invented the modern TV btw) but if you like many Scots or wannabee Scots, can't accept that the music, the language ,the bagpipes, much of your DNA and of course Uisce beath, all come from the Irish, I cant help you.

  • @22grena I would also like to refer you to the wikipedia pages - youtube prevents me from posting links on here - that show inventions and discoveries made by people from a certain nation. Compare the scottish to the irish and then tell my nation we never created anything you racist c*nt

  • As I said in the original post.

  • @nilradem

The Clancy brothers said when they went to the US the only places they got a good reception was in poor areas that played country music and blues clubs.

  • @trollfinger

Interesting - and not surprising! Roots music of whatever form speaks to the same people. I was raised on the stuff.

  • This song makes my heart sing………..so good…..!

  • every time i listen to this it makes me cry...i wonder why...stevie earle and all the others give a faultless performance here...thank god for music like this

  • My own Da was a protestant from the Orkney Islands and my mum was from the Falls Rd in Belfast.Funny old world.Wised me up.

  • @billyhunchback Was your Da from the main island or one of the smaller ones? I honeymooned in Orkney, best two weeks of my life. It's a beautiful place, much better than Wash DC (home now).

  • @chrismca :Stromness on the main Island

  • @billyhunchback he'll be a good man if hes from orkney

  • @jmlennie :He was but he sadly passed away in'85.but all is not lost I see above Steve Earle is playing in the Mandela hall,Belfast in 8 weeks.Happy Days:)

  • just found this it is superb..kf

  • As solidly Irish as any Irish tune I ever heard. Way to go, memphis!

  • I have always enjoyed Steve, but he looks terrible in this video. :(... like a man in pain

  • @ajferet

Are you kidding? I think he is very hot here! And, from what I know from his biography, he was pretty happy at this point of his life. It comes across more in other videos from this show, but he smiles a lot on this DVD.

  • @ajferet

Oops - I was thinking this was from another show that was recorded for a DVD. But still, it is around the same time.

  • @ajferet thats what father time and livin the dream will do to ya

  • I love Steve for Steve but ..yikes..he capturees Ireland

    We DO look the best

  • one of the two reasons that still give me hope in the US.

    The boss and The Duke

  • Copy and paste this video link to the YT search bar

    watch?v=8OQJ4UrAVJw

this place is a bit of a time warp, static displays, the way it once was. The dummies used to be motor driven but after the 1970s they were deactivated. Seems someone has been 'painting England green' the way the Irish claim, every engine, every welder, every figurehead is daubed green no matter what color it was at first. But the interesting thing here is the big budget given this place, a bit like Red Bay in Canada! :)

  • @keplermission Whats wrong with green. And red bay is in Co.Antrim

  • @billyhunchback Nothing wrong with green. I was born and bred in Co Antrim as a prod and now in mixed marriage. Steve Earle one of the finest writer/singers.

  • Steve is taking place of a generation of true artists that are passing away. We've lost some great ones in the last few years, and I feel he will step up and be a part of music history like he deserves. He is an amazing talent and has had his share of personal problems, but his music has been incredible all the way. He's a man that's lived and shared his life. Thanks Steve for all the great music along the way. Can't wait for more.

  • When I first heard this, I figured it was a traditional Irish folk song. Then I looked it up and found Steve wrote it. He is talented. Great song, like Whiskey in the Jar or Drunken Sailor. Driftwood does a good version on youtube.

  • perfect moment when he played this (in character) in the latest treme episode

  • he does get the credit he deserves,,,,,,,,,its just drink n drugs messed him up so much some of his live shows are crap and ruined himfor me....the energy n fire was gone.......who wants to listen to a singer ramble on about politics durin a concert,,,,,just blast out guitar town n do ur job !

  • @1888gp

Sounds like you actually like his drug-addled stage more than the clearheaded work he has been doing since he got clean in 1994. You have a right to disagree with his politics, but don't blame it on the drugs.

  • Colin Farrell on drums.......

  • james may on flute

  • 17 people are from mayo

  • This is an awesome song to come on when you're from Galway, not in Galway, and slightly drunk.

  • @rockerlkj feeling exactly like that right now !

  • 2:00... gets me every time :)

  • @wolfwithhorns

This is not a cover - this is the original by the songwriter. And I would say Mundy's is a weak imitation.

  • @nilradem Munday is unmitigated fun.........

  • @Peterodea1

I can see that Mundy can get a crowd going, and is probably fun to see live. I don't dislike his cover, but still think his vocal phrasing and musicianship are nowhere close to Steve's. In any case, without Mundy it would probably not be so popular in Ireland. I just think Steve should be credited, which Mundy is happy to do even if his fans don't.

  • @nilradem you are right, my friend, Steve Earle did write this incredible song, they love him in Ireland and we love him in Minnesota and Texas and a thousand others places on the earth. God bless Steve Earle.

  • the best galway girl no one come close

  • Ok, if Sharon Shannon's the lass sitting down with the squeezebox, who's the girl with the fiddle and the satin dress?

  • yay Galway. im a Galway girl even tho i dont live there anymore. this song makes me feel glad to be Irish and from GalwayWooowwoo!

  • @celticfemale

    lucky u.:)

  • i love this song!Wtg Steve...you are awesomeee!

  • his smile :')

  • @xz23zx

Yep... that smile melts my heart!

  • U still got it Stevo... Rock On...

  • awesome song just lov it!!!!!!

  • You are right sinjin. Let me guess again--Nollig Casey?

  • @rmwrite1b I'm sure it is Nollaig Casey on fiddle - she is listed on the video cover notes as being a performer there anyway...........

  • I am an Irish Girl, and i love this song.

  • @AndieB9 I'm an Irish guy and I like it too LOL

  • @ninelivecat I'm English and I love it !

  • A wonderful song , sitting around a campfire in Canada, guitar, mandolin, whistle ( D ) , bohdran, tambourine, Moosehead beer, tank tops, BBQ, hey, forget the politics in your comments !!!

  • Sorry, being Nutral, being a northerner, Chris Kills the song, bring it back to Ireland, after all we invented Country and exported it with our pilgrim

  • lollllllllllllllllllllll hes left of Obama???? lolllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll............

  • Steve's version of this is the one and only!! You can see how emotional he get's a minute into it . Sharon just looks up to him as if to say...'This really happened' Genius!

  • Colin Farrell on the drums I see.

  • I get very disappointed when people (idiots) say that this version is not the original

  • I love this song <3

  • 17 people wear their anuses as hats.

  • is aoibhinn liom :D

  • It's all the up to 17 losers who don't get it.

  • Whoa! When did Steve get fat?

  • I believe that the fiddler is Mairead NiMhaonaigh, co-founder of Altan. The left-handed bouzouki player on the left is Donal Luny, who really does appear in half the YouTube Irish videos.

  • @rmwrite1b

I really don't think that the fiddler is Mairead Ni Mhaonaigh, but I was wondering if that was Donal Lunny for the longest time.

  • great song.... speeking of the irish do you still drag Cindy Sheehan around with you?? or is that not correct since your man Obama is running the wars now ..its amasing how phoney balony these entertainers are... they dont know how to be radical anymore now that their socialist crowd are the establishment now ...lollllll

  • @jwagon28

Steve has been clear that he is to the left of Obama, and he (as well as many others) are still critical of the war, no matter who is in charge.

  • check out Celtic Thunder singing this song. This one is great, but so is their's!

  • Can anyone tell me the name of the fiddle player? I see her in lots of videos, but have yet to see her name. Sharon is great but she deserves credit too.

  • @bluesryder1 It's Nollaig Casey.

  • steve has let him sel go!

  • you gotta love abeautiful finely dressed violinist swaying to such a great song

  • The drummer is actually The Jesus from the Big Lebowski. Let me tell you something, pendejo. You pull any of your crazy shit with him, you flash a piece out on the lanes, He'll take it away from you, stick it up your ass and pull the fucking trigger till it goes "click."

  • When is this??

  • this is the best and original version , way better then mundys

  • A good song is always good, and Earle makes it look easy. I've heard a lot of versions of this - this one's the best.

  • Great song, most homosexual looking drummer ever

  • @jkdriscoll he might look gay but he is one of the bast session drummers in the business Iv worked with him on several occasions and he gets some amount of hot chicks..

  • @OlanRollin Who cares if he's gay or not? Apparently Steve don't so what's it to any of you?

  • @19111ellyc it was a reply you moron I was saying exactly that

  • @OlanRollin Eat me

  • @19111ellyc yummo!

  • what the hell is that instrument hes playing? looks fun!

  • @nuttacatz Its calles a Mandolin

  • I really don't get you guys who abuse somebody because they don't have the same views about a song as you. If everybody all liked the same thing then it would be really boring. Get over yourselves - by the way, I do like this song and really couldn't care less how many others don't, except if we stop liking him, then Steve might stop playing:(

  • the girls in this video are so beautiful as the song

  • i lost my heart to a galway girl in castlebar in 1999

  • I lost my heart to a Montréal girl...her hair is black and her eyes are blue. 16 years together.

  • @wcaithness Yup... you gotta watch those ones.

  • the original is always better, mundy has no original ideas at all

  • @MrSavage4prez That's harsh. Mundy continually praises Steve Earle for writing song. And if you genuinely believe that "Mundy has no original ideas at all" then you obviously haven't heard many of his songs.

  • hah the drummer at 0.44,,,awesome. love steve earle

  • Always seems to remind me of my fiencee . god i love her so much . xxxxxx

  • What 15 losers don't like this?!? Awesome...I just wish Steve would get the credit he deserves...

  • It is a lovely song but in comparison to the Mundy version (live at Dolans) which was my first introduction, this one seems almost dirge like. Sorry all you Steve fans ... he is wonderful but the Irish blas is missing ....

  • @pipedreamband right on there, I think this is the best version, the 15 really are losers

  • @pipedreamband

I totally agree with you, this has to be one of the best songs ever, even better if in Galway in a wee local pub and the musicians start playing it, everyone and I mean everyone gets up and sings along, it's fantastic. Going back to Galway in 8 weeks and can't wait

  • @nelzmum Doesn't have to be in Galway. Was in a pub in Louth when the band played it everyone in the place woke up!

  • @pipedreamband Perhaps these 17 people just don't enjoy this particular version... no harm in that. A difference in tastes does not make a person a "loser". Personally, there are times I really enjoy a more traditional playing of certain music and other times I can enjoy just about any interpretation of a song. Even though Steve wrote this song, I'd be willing to bet there are some folks who think it's a traditional Irish tune. I like this video, btw.

  • @pipedreamband :18 arseholes need to get a life ffs.

  • arty mcglynn on guitar and lunny on the zouk

  • it´s soooooooo nice .,.,,.,.

  • Steve looks like a really good man!

  • wait was that John Mcsherry on the whistle?!?!

    great piper!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • My girlfriend is from County Offaly and she is a redhead, but I play her this song all the time on my box in session. I love her so.

  • oh gosh!!! i love this song and the guy wh sent it to me :P

  • this is like a pear cider made from 100% pear

  • Great song! Happy memories of a concert lonnnng ago - Steve Earle and the Dukes in Manchester - must be 20 years back now!! Love your sound, Steve!

  • ireland is the best
