This is your first attempt? Wow! Really lovely. The opening is great, and then you continue with all sorts of beautiful and interesting moves. Thanks so much for sharing!
I did trim mine, but only because the edges were a little frayed. From what I've read, it's not a good idea to alter the edges any more than a little trim every now and then--sewing or even using Fray Check on the edges weighs the fabric down. I'm short too--4'11"--but after a little while those long fans become manageable.
That's how I got started too! Oriental Curio also provided me with my first set of fans, then a friend bought a second for me as a birthday present from the same vendor. They've both worked out great. The hardest part for me is to keep dancing while working the fans... But like you said, practice makes perfect! My friends also "asked" me to perform with mine. My strategy was to absolutely nail a short little routine, at least for my first! It worked out well. Your's will, too! ^_^
Yep - same stratagi. I also did a lot of sanding on the "handles" so my palms wouldn't get sore. Have you tried trimming them shorter (I'm not so tall)? Do you fix the edges with something?
Yippee! It's kind of tough when you get into fan veils, since there isn't a whole lot out there yet to study up on. Plus, you're probably not going to walk into class one day and the teacher says, "Ok, ladies, get out those fan veils and let's work on our technique." But...it's really fun to figure out. ^_^ Looking great for your first try, you'll do awesome! I happen to know of an eBay vendor... PM if you're interested!
Thanks for your comment! I seem to be the first in Denmark to explore fan veils, but my dance friends think I should start importing them!! I bought these on eBay at oriental-curio in China - good service. If you know of other, let me know. I learned by watching everything I could find on youtube - true, it's not a lot, but enough to get started. I'm already being pressured to perform at the next Hafla!
Nice I ordered some and they should be here soon,They are torquoise and look like the ocean waves if you dance with them

Very nice fans. :) They look like the pair I just got. I had to trim the ends of mine just a little too.
