This is in my opinion the first punk song. So many protest songs of that time had to conceal their meanings with metaphors, this is straight to the fucking point. It gives me chills every time I hear it.
Actually....Bruce has had Ernest Boom Carter,Mad Dog Vini Lopez.....who is the drummer on Born To Run...and the Mighty Max Weinberg.....in the E Street Band. Also Max's son has sat in with Bruce a few times.......If you are going to comment...Get your facts straight.
@naughtmoses Max Weinberg is not the original member of the E Street band there was someone else before him vini lopez or something like that, max joined during the born to run album
[Note for "bapyou"]. Bruce, I am surprised that, as a scientist and educator, you chose to take offense at leachim04's cogently argued points. Both of you seem opposed to abuse and violence, but I found your own approach offensive and violent. However much you disagree with his opinions, he is deserving of respect because he too abhors abuses of power meted out against defenseless people. That's what the two of you have in common and I am surprised you didn't see that.
@pdebee "Both of you seem opposed to abuse and violence"
No, the other fool is spreading hatred toward Muslims, the only information about which he obtains from secondary sources, television, etc. I know many Muslims. My ex-wife was Muslim. Every Muslim I know thinks that extremist Islamists are idiots, and detest those commiting acts of violence in the name of their religion.
So don't give me any bullshit. This kid leach simply repeats fear-mongering points he's absorbed from the media.
@bapyou Bruce, I am very pleased for you that you live in the USA, where you have the freedom to express yourself in any way you can, however offensively. Maybe one day you will look into your own heart and wonder where all that anger and hatred comes from. I wish you all the best in your efforts to become a man of equanimity, if not kindness.
@leachim04 "It's pointless because you ignore the points."
What fucking points, you numbskull? "Islam is evil." "They're out to take over western civilization!"
I've heard it all before. It's broadcast 1000s of times a day around the world by the corporate-controlled media. I've even read some of the stupid posts on the website from which you clipped your particular talking points (about Geert Wilders, etc). It's inane dopey scare tactics.
@leachim04 Set aside the grammar, about which you are wrong.
"Your reply is unfortunately typical of those who are unable to engage in a sensible debate ... seek to discredit the opposition & avoid key points of argument."
You have no points. You repeat idiotic information you clip and paste from web sites. That's all you do. And for the fourth time: How many Muslims do you know personally? Give me a number.
I can quote numerous Bible passages just as violent as anything in the Koran.
@leachim04 "no error your use of '(sic)' " You referred to a list: "this" should have been "these;" plural not singular.
And do you get all of your information from jihadwatch (dot) org? Is this your only source of ideas? Websites? Do you never get away from your computer and experience life firsthand? What is your problem, you stupid propagandized American?
Answer my question or suck the cock of Dick Cheney: How many Muslims do you personally know? Give me a number.
@leachim04 "I'm making a legitimate point that time will prove."
Its "legitimacy" is in your mind. There is no time required to prove this.
War is Peace ... is the policy that George The Idiot Bush wrought on the peoples of Iraq and Afghanistan. Obama continues this policy. Only a psychopath would claim that they are bringing peace to a nation as they rain bombs down upon them.
How many Muslims do you know personally? Give me a number.
@leachim04 "Unless of course you find yourself coming against the totalitarian death cult of Islam."
Unless of course you were once married to a Muslim & realize phrases such as "the totalitarian death cult of Islam" is a complete fiction designed to frighten you into supporting the wars of the American ruling class.
Remember: War is Peace.
Pull down your pants, bend over, spread your cheeks. The ruling class wants you.
And, whatever you do, do not read about 1930s labor history.
THE working class anthem for all of rock. Every guy today contemplating going off to war should be forced to sit and listen to this song ... with a lyric sheet in hand.
This song was not written for Dick Cheney, George Bush, or anyone like them who attended an Old Money New England Prep School and went off to Harvard or Yale merely because their daddy and mommy went to Harvard or Yale.
"Patriotism is nothing more than the organized interests of the ruling class." ~ Mikhail Bakunin
@bapyou Your right. It was not written *for* the Wealthy Elite. It was written *about* them.
Some folks are born
silver spoon in hand,
Lord don't they help themselves.
But when the tax man comes to the door,
Lord, the house looks like a rummage sale.
It's still true. The Rs refused to consider *any* bill, including, one extending unemployment benefits; a critical arms control treaty; etc. Until the wealthy had the Bush tax cuts extended, & inheritance tax excemptions raised to $10,000,000.
Max was Conan's House Band leader when Bruce wasn't on the road, Max had a release that allowed him to leave Conan's show to hit the road with Bruce and the E. St Band when he wanted to. I didn't watch Conan much but saw his show when he introducde the Drummer who was taking Max's place and explained that Max was on the Road with Bruce and even gave some of the Concert Dates. Max looks stiff as King Kong's Johnson when he plays. but he is the Metering Master, he is so rock solid it's amazing...

Just as powerful as it was in 1970, and as relevant. This is as effective an anti-war song as anything Dylan ever did, and that's going some. Fogerty is amazing. And the E Street band takes care of business, big time.

He was seen by 15 mill, grossed $1.2 bill, 25 years after his popularity peaked in 85. Granted, popularity and quality are not the same thing.
