I can appreciate that to hit anything at that range requires a certain ammount of skill it is unethical to shoot anything but targets at this range there is a delay of around a second from the trigger being squeezed and the round hitting the target which could move in this time resulting in a non fatal shot and the chances of a quick follow up shot at this range is unlikely I am a deer stalker here in the U.K and I would not shoot at more than 250-300 yds MAX. the real skill is to get in close.

@allizdog1000, very true. And high powered rifles were never part of the evolutionary process. Modern hunting (especially since radical cartridge improvements in the 1800s) is not part of the natural balance, and that's why it has to be heavily regulated. These killings are way too "efficient," and these videos are mostly low-brow attempts to show off sniping skills.
I've lived in Texas for 27 years and have been to many different regions of the state and have never seen terrain like this. Where in Texas was this filmed?
see this is what i dont get , is that people are actualy proud of taking a shot like that sure it was an exalent shot but your lazy! i could buy one of those 2000 dollar scopes and snipe deer from a 1000 yards off from my back porch all day if i wanted to. but im a real hunter. theres nothing sportsmanlike in taking a shot like that. leave shots like that to the military,we aint military were hunters.
this is actually quite stupid, if he had of just injured the deer, he would not have chased after it. Was this a one off? or was this shot tried on other deer. No real hunter would have taken this shot. They sound like a bunch of yahoos. A real hunter takes consideration of the death of the harvested animal. Maybe they were just a little to lazy to walk the 600 yds and take just as nice of a shot at 350yds.
Irresponsible. Granted it was a great shot but if that animal was not a clean kill I doubt you would have ever found it. Also, according to the video, it took 1 second from shot to kill and the 300 gr 338 has a muzzle velocity of about 2800 ft per sec so the 950 yds is about right.

That wasn't a nice shot. That was a LUCKY shot. Any animal deserves more respect than to be shot at from that distance. As a hunter myself I feel we as hunters should take our quarry as humanely as possible. Taking a shot from that kind of distance just to prove one's marksmanship is NOT showing the animal respect or guaranteeing a quick clean kill.

I want to get a .338 to replace my .30-06. I've heard nothing but good things about the quality end of that caliber. Also I'm getting a .22-250 for a varmint rifle. I've had an SKS and M1 carbine, which I will be selling to help leverage part of the expense of a .22-250. But I've heard only great things about both the calibers. I used my M1 carbine for the longest time for varmint but it only gives me close to 300 yards, I really want that .22-250.

Tippet76 apparently you haven't been hunting with a large bore rifle. When you hit something with a .338 (or .300 Mags and Weatherbys) it is DOWN, end of subject. I shoot a .300 WM Savage and have yet to have a "hit" run on me.
@Tippet76, nope no 880 yard kill shots yet. My longest kill was 790 yards, large Mule Deer, Saunderson TX. Granted it's not 950 but go make a 790 kill shot and get back to me. You get a lot of practice out here in God's Country (Texas that is!). Being a designated Marksman in the Army probably didn't hurt either...
@mta415 What's the difference in a DM's training and a sniper? I know the different roles that they play but it's probably still pretty similar. I live next to Fort Huachuca in SE Arizona. All that I've ever hunted were coyotes on my and my neighbors property with an SKS so I've never had any real long range shots. Do you guys use M14's exclusively or do you get to choose your weapon?
Sniper school and DM trng. are 2 different animals. We have to do all of the math (wind, BP, elevation, temp, range est. etc..) but we don't have to do stalking, insertion training and whatnot. When I was a DM @ 2/2 ACR in W. Germany (wall was still up then) we had M-21 rifle but in Desert Storm I had a "regular" 14, wasn't match grade or anything! Go figure... oh and PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!!! Yeah its a lot of ammo but when the shot needs to count.....

no its real. people do this all the time now. all you need is the right equipment and you have to know your weapon and your load. it takes a lot of time and money to get a rig shooting good at this range but its real. he's not just holding the cross hairs over the deer and hoping he hits it, he probably has a range card that tells him how many clicks to adjust his scope for this range. definitely not fake

@Tippet76, nope no 880 yard kill shots yet. My longest kill was 790 yards, large Mule Deer, Saunderson TX. Granted it's not 950 but go make a 790 kill shot and get back to me. You get a lot of practice out here in God's Country (Texas that is!). Being a designated Marksman in the Army probably didn't hurt either...

@mta415 What's the difference in a DM's training and a sniper? I know the different roles that they play but it's probably still pretty similar. I live next to Fort Huachuca in SE Arizona. All that I've ever hunted were coyotes on my and my neighbors property with an SKS so I've never had any real long range shots. Do you guys use M14's exclusively or do you get to choose your weapon?

Sniper school and DM trng. are 2 different animals. We have to do all of the math (wind, BP, elevation, temp, range est. etc..) but we don't have to do stalking, insertion training and whatnot. When I was a DM @ 2/2 ACR in W. Germany (wall was still up then) we had M-21 rifle but in Desert Storm I had a "regular" 14, wasn't match grade or anything! Go figure... oh and PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!!! Yeah its a lot of ammo but when the shot needs to count.....

very impressive shot! What do you use to calculate wind, altitude, etc. on a shot like that? I really wanna learn how to make shots from that kinda range distance. Also, what kinda rifle was you shooting? Kinda sounded like you was using .308 rounds

its all in the triginomitry if you have a good range finder then you can pop almost anything. get good at math if you wanna make really long shots

no its real. people do this all the time now. all you need is the right equipment and you have to know your weapon and your load. it takes a lot of time and money to get a rig shooting good at this range but its real. he's not just holding the cross hairs over the deer and hoping he hits it, he probably has a range card that tells him how many clicks to adjust his scope for this range. definitely not fake
