Wow Pat you're getting old brother... I guess we all are. Truly a visionary, in the literal definition.. what a player, what a note selector... just wowowowowowow! For all of you rock guys trying to find your Jazz Voice Pat is the best place to begin.. his "Shape" approach is so cool.. once you see the world through Diminished positions... its all over. This man changed my musical life 15 years ago along with Jim Hall and I've never looked back.
Watching an artist like this just makes me totally sick!...I mean, what he's already forgotten, I've yet to learn!.. I have to stop watching freakin' genius's like this anymore!...
Well, I don't know that my question was interesting, or even intelligible!
It seemed to me he was says that he plays major or minor triads on the inner strings and kind of goes into them from below and out at the top with notes that create dissonance. No?
@Drblooter99 "Behind the ostensible government sits enthroned an INVISIBLE GOVERNMENT owing NO allegiance and acknowledging NO responsibility to the people. To destroy this invisible government, to befoul this unholy alliance between corrupt business and corrupt politics is the first task of the statesmanship of today." PRESIDENT THEODORE ROOSEVELT, 1906
@Drblooter99 Between 1555 and 1931 the Jesuit Order was expelled from at least 83 countries, city states and cities, for engaging in political intrigue and subversion plots against the welfare of the state, according to the records of a Jesuit priest of repute(Thomas J. Campbell).-J.E.C. Shepard
So -- he imagines his runs going "through" major and minor chords in the middle? He goes into a major or minor chord from dissonance, and emerges in dissonance?
@Drblooter99 I just watched this again and realized that if one buys into his system and uses it for improvising with jazz, fusion, and some rock, we will all interprut his meaning in slightly different ways.
He has a system that seems easy on the surface and may be theoretically, the application of it requires experience and intuition from years of improvising (even over pentatonic scales).

This is taken from page 491 of Foucault's Pendulum by Umberto Eco. 'Coincidentally' Umberto Eco has written the introduction to the newly printed version of Alexandre's The Count of Monte Christo.
He uses a form of minor conversion where all three chord structures: major, minor, and dominant can be matched with the diatonic minor scale. I approach it as either dorian or aeolian. Aeolian in more rock/latin chord patterns. Have you tried it? If not, it's really cool. As for emerging in dissonance, I'm not sure what you mean.
It's a really interesting question so let me know.

I feel like if I went to Pat Martino's house and listened to him talk for eight hours, I could sustain for the rest of my life off just that time.
