Most of the problems with the unions would be solved if the members were placed back in control. There are too many unions where the officials have tied up the process, ensuring that they cannot be voted out of office.
Labor unions want to deny the right to a secret ballot. There is no justification for this evil bill. Keep American workers free to work without union intimidation and extortion.
There are two sides of this issue. It is the employers that harrass the employee and intimate them to now forming a union. They, (meaning the employers), intimate the employees to tell them if they are voting for a union. Again, there is more to this than they are saying. Under this bill, a the employees can request a secret ballot and get it. This bill does NOT stop that.
What a shock - Gingrich is supporting the position of big business. They never tell the side of the story where the little guy gets gypped. Like when they say "Democrats will raise taxes" they are careful to never say specifically WHO's taxes, and in this health care debate, they fail to mention that all that matters in a for-profit business (for-profit health insurance companies) are the PROFITS!
Labor Unions can decide themselves if they want a secret ballot. The GOP is mis-stating what this bill actually says. Don't act like your surprised. Same bullshit, different day!
The comments below are almost farcical - taking away the right of an individual to have a secret ballot to vote for union representation is good for the employees? How does intimidation and forced participation create jobs - are you insinuating people are too stupid and don't know what is good for them? If union and collective representation are so great how come unionized business have been driven to their knees (i.e. steel industry, auto industry, the entire country of France)?
"The worst crime against working people is a company which fails to operate at a profit" -- Samuel gompers
The history of the steel unions, auto unions, and airline unions clearly show that the biggest threat to employment is forced unionization. Unions are driving businesses into bankruptcy... and they want compulsive organizing to bail them out.
My answer is to respect the rights of employers. For some reason, you prefer to violate the rights of employers rather than negotiate fairly. You have chosen evil rather than responsibility.
I worked for a Union HVAC/Sheet Metal company for 12 years and the owner loved it. He wouldn't have it any other way. The owner got more respect from his UNION employees than our NON-UNION competitor because he treated his employees right. Oh, largest HVAC/Sheet Metal company in Las Vegas, Nevada. You don't know shit about unions.
How can people think non union or union jobs are safe, wrong!! Even working for minimum wage with no benefits we will lose jobs and people have lost their jobs to countries that have universal health care and no labor or environmental laws. (China)
Don't the Republicans have a more appealing personality than Newt to peddle their bizarre philosophy: "anti-union legislation is actually good for workers".
Newt, you and your conservative supply-side policies have passed their sell-by-date. American Solutions is paying Newt a grand salary to subdue and destroy average Americans' dreams, aspirations and rights--but, we're on to them...and him.
At 28 years of age you should have better job opportunities then the local grocery store making $200 dollars for 2 weeks.
Thats the problem with the trade policies and tax codes of the US, the middle class will have no say unless we can organize and focus our vote on labor issues and the tax codes that give US manufactures tax brakes for moving off shore.
The thought of an organized work force strikes fear in the hearts of the Washington power base, we need to take our government back from the big business fat cats that have been controlling Washington with their money.
And I ask how do we take back our government, do we do it as individuals or do we do it as a grass roots special interest group or as worker unions.
Of the three options the only one they fear is working family unions!!
So, if the US was gaining jobs, EFCA would be okay with him? No,not even. True fact: Newt and the big business backers he shills for are pathologically opposed to workers organizing for health benefits, better pay, etc., no matter the economic climate. There is never a good time for it.
The reason Unions could cause jobs to be lost ist because of NAFTA and the globalization of our manufacturing. Our country rewards companys that ship jobs overseas. Not to mention allowing millions of illegal immigrants to stay in this country at a time when millions of Americans are unemployed.
Ok, if you are a Fortune-500 business executive who is anti-EFCA, or just a regular old multi-millionaire like Newt on video here, then I understand your perspective. FOR THE OTHER 99% OF US, this bill will create stronger jobs for our communities. Stronger jobs means better wages, which means more purchasing power, which will in turn be pumped back into the economy.
Oh, wait. I guess the Fortune 500 exec.'s have something to gain too...
if unions were so great why is it that for an example, ford, gm and Chrysler are failing and Nissan and Honda (factories are in the us) are booming... answer, its not there fuel efficiency the American companies are now better look it up, it is because every car that is American cost another $3,600 more for the same type of car that the other makes, why because of the union cost ...would you by the same style car for $18,000 or $21,600...i rest my case!
Unions more often vote for Democrats because they favorer the middle class and prefer trickle up economics that put money in the consumers wallets. Republicans know there is strength in numbers and thats the only reason they are trying to bust unions. A hard lesson they learned in the last elections. And all the union haters you run across are most likely bitter Republican voters that know they lost because of union voters.
Just plain wrong - the legislation gives workers the power to decide whether the ballot will be secret or not. It takes that choice away from management and gives it to the worker. No wonder neo-cons don't like it.
Having a secret ballot gives workers the choice to keep it secrete or not, but now you force them to declare if they are going to make a secrete ballot or not. The only reason for doing this is to coerce the workers to vote one way or another.
Under Card Check employees are given a card. They can sign in support of unionization, against unionization, or to have a secret ballot. Card Check does not take away the secret ballot. It gives employees the ability to choose. Elitists like Newt are scared of Card Check because unionization campaigns could take place without managements awareness and intimidation.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
How much experence do you have with union bosses. This card. you don't think will have their name work ID or simply be taken by hand in full sight from the person filling it out. There is no secrecy about it. Start living in the real world.
How much experience do you have writing sentences? Not much, but to the point, most employees dont care whether their peers know if they are pro or anti union. But say the employee does not want to have his views known; she can simply sign for the secret ballot. And union bosses!? During union campaigns there is not yet a union, let alone bosses. What the hell are you talking about? You dont make grammatical or logical sense.
Well let's see here. Since Union membership has went down, so has jobs, pay, and the standard of living. This is just more anti-union propaganda. Unions were the backbone that built this country, not stupid conservative who destroyed it. Oh and Alasdius, you are a dumb ass. Was it the union that busted the skulls of the auto workers in Detroit who fought to give us fair labor standards? You watch too many movies.
Until the last few months, job numbers have been rising basically constantly for 20 years. The standard of living has been going up basically constantly for closer to 500. Pay has been fairly stagnant, but it hasn't gone down.
As for my earlier posts, did you even read them? I specifically said companies intimidating unionizers was a real phenomenon - I'm not trying to deny or minimize it. All I'm saying is that it isn't the only problem, and that we shouldn't focus on it exclusively.
Most children are not raised by their parents, but by a 1:40 ratio of government employee to child...
In many ways our quality of life has significantly worsened.
How about statistics on US black families? They used to be homeowners, fathers worked and mothers raised the kids at home in safe neighborhoods. What happened?
I agree, is a serious problem. The cause has nothing to do with the traditional black American culture. Before the "Great Society" black families were home owners, both parents raised children, they were in the work force.
Welfare regulation has incentives for unwed mothers.

no one its coercing no one the constitution said it ,u got the right to gatter together ,to form a political party union or wherever,an no one its coerced, this people are against the unions ,because they are againts the workers human rights such as safety place of work a decent salary,a rigth for education and health for their families, the unions used to defend the workers rights now they play politics,so u all need its to get ride of them and created u own union, and dont need to pay any dues.
I am the head of a corporation exploiting 500 wage slaves. If Card Check passes I won't be able to intimidate and coerce my peons in order to remain union-free. Continue to distort reality in support of us bigwigs Newt and all power to the corporate dictatorship!
Current law is that your wage slaves get a private ballot to determine whether they will unionize or not. The whole point of a private ballot is that you're not vulnerable to coercion, because nobody knows who voted in what manner.
Under card check, they'll have to announce publicly that they're trying to form a union, and thus you'll be able to run a far more effective intimidation campaign, since you'll know exactly who to target. Even if you think corporations are evil, this law won't help.
Under Card Check eployees choose to have a secret ballot or choose to sign cards in order to form a union. THEY CHOOSE. Giving employees the ability to join a union by signing cards means that unionizing campaigns can take place without management's knowledge and intimidation. Scheduling ballots meens that management has a window to coerce and fire employees. Bottom line: Card Check will make unionization easier. You really dont have any idea what you are talking about, do you?
Legalized Thret - But Card Check will also open up employees to intimidation by pro-union employees. Now, those people who sign the petition to get the pro-union guys off of their backs won't have the right to make their true desires known without pro-union members knowing how they really voted.
You dont realize that the current system opens up employees to intimidation by pro-union employees, but this coercion has no teeth. Pro-union employees can not fire you for being anti-union, so its not even coercion, its persuasion. The employers are the only ones who can coerce anybody. Now I dont believe a person should be coerced into any decision. So whats the solution? Dont tell the people capable of coercion (the bosses) that a union campaign is underway.
it also subjects union supporters to making visible targets of themselves
management will know who to promote and who to hold back, who to relocate when there's a closure and who to lay off, who to bribe and who to penalize
it's not really good for anyone but maybe union thugs who figure they'll be more willing to resort to tire slashing and pet poisoning than the company
Management can fire the openly pro-union organizers and can sit each employee down, one by one, to explain why unionization is a bad idea. So first management cuts off the head and then coerces everybody else. The fact is that in a free society management would have no part in this process. The pro and anti- union employees would debate what is the best direction, majority wins. You know, people deciding their own future without intimidation. This is what Card Check does.
everything you've said is the opposite of the facts
for example, telling someone what you think is not coercion, you didn't just coerce me, I'm not coercing you, my comments don't reduce your ability to go vote pro-union
also, a public vote completely opens you to intimidation by either side, it doesn't make you less vulnerable in any way
also, management has no part in a secret vote, all they can do is talk, they can't pry into voting and punish or reward anyone, like the union thugs want
I guess I just can't see why anyone would give up a secret ballot on an important issue. Yes, union-busting is a real phenomenon(though not as common as some people think), but so are mafioso unions. Sure, they can't fire you, but they can break your kneecaps as well as anyone. We need to balance the two. Forcing a secret ballot, like we do for elections, seems the best way of keeping coercion out and letting the workers decide legitimately for themselves.
You really think the Italian mob goes around trying to unionize American corporations? This is a one racist fantasy you have. Wal-Mart wage-slaves would love this support. The fact is that under the current system the only coercion employees recieve is from the management against unionization. And once again, under Card Check the employees can still have a secret ballot if they so choose. They can also choose to keep the management out of their business and just sign cards.
Who said anything about Italians? The phrase "the (nationality) mafia" is a common one. I was running out of characters on that post, so I abbreviated what I had to say, assuming that people would understand what I meant. Since you don't seem to, just replace with the phrase "organized crime". Just like union-busting companies, it's not as common as the stereotype, but it has happened and will again, and it's just as detrimental to worker's rights, and it's something we need to consider.
Anne Layne-Farrar is not a particularly "noted" economist. She works for a consulting firm called LECG who's main clients are Fortune 500 companies. Many of these same companies stand to have to lose if the EFCA is passed. Her study also conviently ignores lower-turnover rates of unionized employees and grossly inflates potential job loses.
I am the head of a corporation exploiting 500 wage slaves. If Card Check passes I won't be able to intimidate and coerce my peons in order to remain union-free. Continue to distort reality in support of us bigwigs Newt and all power to the corporate dictatorship!
This card check nonsense is another liberal communist move towards complete control over the population and the establishment of an North American Union. Fuck you filthy liberal commies.
I admire a man who screws around with a chick as his wife's on her deathbed. Newt divorced his true love just before she died. Noble, indeed. He's the one I look up to for answers and solutions. Go Newt!
The Lewinsky investigation was utter farce, I'll agree, but the impeachment trial was for perjury, not adultery. So far as I know, Gingrich never perjured himself about his affair, he just had one. It hardly speaks well of the man's character, but it's not quite as bad as you're making it out to be.
That said, how does getting a bit on the side eleven years ago affect the merits of what he has to say regarding card check laws? Judge the argument, not the man.
Please don't believe this idiot!!! The best thing to do is to do a little research on this subject and find out the truth. You sure won't get the truth from Newt....
NO WAY! Employers cut jobs in advance of new taxes and regulation! Card check is a huge job killer! More important it is a loss of freedom and security in the work place.
I love when people hear things they don't like or don't want to have to believe, they throw the ol' propaganda word around. Haha. Call it whatever you want, doesn't change facts or the history behind them. Common sense is just completely lost on this nation of retards.
Increased job security and economic stability, which is ensured through improved workers rights and unionization, would soften the blow dealt to middle class Americans when Wall Street goes crazy.
The Employee Free Choice Act is a good bill despite whatever corporate propaganda the right may spew.
Bought and paid for by you name it lobbyist firm. How very gey that we allow our elected officials in this "free country" to sell us ideas bought by lobyists. How exactly would a union make you loose jobs? Theory is that because the boss makes less, they would cut jobs?
If their is more cost and regulations in the way of buisness it will cost jobs. Unions are trying to force their way into small buisness. Good by jobs!!!
the world is going to flames no matter what you try and do... the more you struggle to overcome it or change what is inevitable, the more you waste time for yourself
The coercion is on the part of employers who regularly hire union-busting consultants, intimidate workers and fire organizers. The big corporations are scared silly of unions, as well they should be.
I am a working class citizen and I don't want to cough up my paycheck to a greedy Union boss. They are nothing but middlemen who feed off the paychecks of hard working people. Unions are about maintaining political power, not about workers anymore. They are powerful political organizations, not pro labor. Unions protect the lazy.
What we need to do is have a nationalized car company run by the government. Just one company and the other companies don't have to join they can be independent. But we need to produce a really good electric car and sell it to Americans and the world. Now, how many problems would that solve at once?
What a bunch of nonesense. We have the 8 hour day because of unions, minimum wage because of unions, these greedy politicians are the equivelant of sweat shop bosses. Read the bill, honestly. People who want unions should be able to have one without the fear of losing their job. Big business wants to abuse workers and spread lies.
Wow, I almost went one full day without hearing something stupid. You do know that Unions raise the unemployment rate, right? That's kind of the point; they prevent others from getting employed where they work so they can keep the price of their labor high. And I don't know if you know this, but a worker absolutely without fear of ever getting fired, regardless of how lazy or incompetent he may be, is not going to work very hard if at all. Such a person is what we call a 'leech'
This isnt about Unions (though we all know they are good for industries, look at all the good they did in the auto industry). This is about workers being free to choose whether or not they want to be in a union without harassment or unfair treatment from unions or employers. What gives anyone else the right to know whether you want to unionize or not? Not a damn thing, the passing of this bill will undoubtedly lead to unnecessary voter intimidation.
Hasn't he been shown to be irrelevant once before. Why is he back trying to get more attention. Does he actually believe he has a chance in hell of running for President in 2012. That can be the only reason he is running is mouth except nobody is listening. He's tainted. Get a clue Newt, it's over. People see the real you.
Look at this leftwing nutjob 'idetached'. LOL!! He actually thinks that people are going to listen to what he says. ROTFL. What a dumbass He doesn't even comment on the substance, only the person. Does that mean that he has no idea about what Newt is talking about and can only attack Newt? Must be.
I wonder why the people only attack the person? Do they not have enough brain power to debate the issues?
What an ass you are. Get a new clue. Your the type that will fall apart the moment your hours get cut or you loose your job. You must think your stuff don't stink. It does. You try to secretly get welfare while still hollering about someone being a leftwing or liberal as if it's a dirty word. Dipsticks like you spew hate and secretly try to get every welfare benefit available in the system. Newt's a loser and so are you. Now bang on those keys cause I pissed you off. Prick.
Wow, nothing of substance again. Apparantly idetached doesn't have any substance to argue. All he can do is attack me and throw out insults. Hmmm........
And also, idetached, you said "....dipsticks like you spew hate..." Ok, tell me then what part of my previous comment was hateful. Or maybe all you can do is throw out baseless accusations like throwing mud on a wall trying to get some to stick.
One worker "negotiating" with an employer is called groveling!!!
The collective mass of workers at a workplace "negotiating" with employers equals a fair chance at a fair bargain!!!
The "secret vote" equals an opportunity for employers to intimidate and harass and fire union advocates... very admirable scheme... not followed in other civilized, self-respecting countries!!!!
So do you think that we should completely do away with all secret ballots? How about we publicize everyone's votes for president, congress, mayor, etc?
What a stupid idea.
And what about the people who sign a petition in order to get the union advocates off of their backs, knowing that when they get their chance for a secret ballot, they can vote against without the union officials breathing down their necks
I sometimes wonder if you and others like you know how to use your brains to think. Newt and the Repubs didn't go after Clinton for having an affair. They went after Clinton for commiting perjury and lying under oath.
The democrats tried to crucify Scooter Libby for perjury. But they wanted Clinton off scott free after his direct lies to investigators.
You have to appreciate the skill these corporate mouthpieces turn white into black, day into night. I can't imagine why Newt is so worried about the labor movement now when he has spent the last 25 years supporting big business, and vice-versa.
I am the head of a business and exploit 500 wage slaves. If Card Check passes I won't be able to intimidate and coerce my peons in order to remain union-free. Continue to distort reality in support of us bigwigs Newt and all power to the corporate dictatorship!

where the fuck does this idiot come up with these figures.
man these "christian"republicans gotta just stop pulling bullshit out of their asses. they've proved they have no knowledge of anything.
after their ruinous, miserable record newt is the last fucker anyone should ever listen too. oops except for the ignorant and stupid "christians" who believe everything their 5th rated trade school educated preachers tell em!
1hipster1 when a group of hateful, bigoted, intolerant, ignorant people, after being completely routed in the last election, on most every level & is unable to comprehend why, well i would expect one's inability to understand simple english.
such is the case with you. i'm never surprised by the denying, lying and blaming you "christian"republicans do (all in the name of christ too).
I'm digressing a bit; but essentially, you're statement describes a great hatred/disrespect of conservatism - a set of believes. Is that not the definition of intolerance?? Also, before mocking anyone's English, you need to learn what a sentence is, specifically a run-on sentence. And finally, what is your opinion on unions, card check, or any topic other than ad-hominem attacks? If all you can do is name call, then I will assume you are daft.
well 1hip`1, i've never mentioned conservatism. i've only talked, as far as i'm concerned (i never decide what you read into my comments) about "christian"republicans.
to me they have nothing to do with conservatism. "christian"republicans are ignorant, intolerant, bigoted haters. i don't really think a true goldwater conservative is in that category.
so before you get yourself in a tizzie, try to understand what i'm talking about. don't go off in your own direction to make a non-point.
If some Republicans and some Christians are "ignorant and bigoted", it does not mean that all Christian Republicans are "ignorant and bigoted" - it's completely illogical. It's simple logic. Look, I'm not a fan of the religious right, but they are not all "ignorant and bigoted" because I disagree with them.
you just gotta be able to quote me correctly 1hip1.
the apt phrase i use (try to use what you were taught in grade school english when you re-read it), is "christian"republicans. first the phrase has NOTHING to do with REAL christians, and it does not include all republicans.
when you can understand that concept, then let's continue the converstation. until then i'll take a pass. we're discussing two different animals.
1hipster1, Trust me, I've been down this road with Wntpoly6 on numerous occasions. The deeper you try and dig into his point of view, the less you'll understand.
They're called "facts", I know you libs have issues with them. It's humorous how you're ranting about people being bigoted, intolerant, and ignorant through some of the most bigoted, intolerant, and ignorant posts I've ever seen on the interwebs, you should add "hypocrite" to your list as well, then you'll have described yourself perfectly.
wytkracka, after 29 yrs of practicing exactly what you're now blaming liberals of, you've not 1 inch of wiggle room & revisionist history won't work!
you turned many good republicans who didn't like being hyjacked by southern bigoted "christians" against their own party.
you got power, created massive disasters everywhere & now to save face, rather than own up & change your ways, as usual you deny, lie & blame liberals for your faults.
stop complaining, grow balls & accept your justice.
care to actually cite an example or would that be too much a diversion from name calling and tantrum throwing? Did Bush spend alot? Yep. Did some Republicans spend alot? Yep. Did it exceed anything done by libs and did it last 29 years? Nope! Talking about revisionist history while ignoring the tax and spend libs that have been around since, well, kennedy is, again, hypocritical, get the log out of your own eye before trying to remove the splinter from another's.
actually i don't have to cite examples. americans know what i said is true!
if you "christian"republicans were presented with examples, all you'd do is deny them, lie about them, then blame the democrats, clinton or obama, all in the name of god!
what you fail to get, you were thrown out of office & power because of your incompetence, hypocracy & those lies.
what's even more alarming, you did it while saying your party had "god on it's side" & promoted "family values". lies all of em.
Actually you do, otherwise you're just another petty, ill-informed, whining lib throwing about accusations because you can't find any facts. There's a real easy way to do it, even for someone as myopic as you, watch the vid, take the first point Newt makes, and argue against it.
Let me take a crack at answering your question.. The reason, in theory, of why card check would kill jobs is this. Say you own a small shop on Main St. USA, You have 6 employees including yourself and one decides that they want a union. As things are right now, you need a certain # of employees to form a union, but this bill would change that. Continued since Im running out of space....
So they go around to everyone and demand that you make a decision, no private vote, just on the spot yes or no. A union is formed. Now what does a union do? They raise wages, allow you to work more overtime, and basically force employers to do things that they cannot afford. Especially in this economy where small business is struggling. So in order to make up the extra cost they eliminate jobs.
No, its about the right to a private vote. Its a fundamental value of America. Why do we have curtains on our voting booths? Why don't we have Acorn come to everyone's front doors and ask us to make our choice with them watching? To keep our choice free of coercion, free to decide without fear of repercussion. That is a freedom everyone as Americans should be staunchly defending.
You're still able to organize if you want without it, but with card check union thugs are free to look at the results of the vote and pay everyone that checked no a personal visit, along with a few other violations, but that's the most atrocious to me.
what i said is actually wytkjracka, very accurate.
the fact you refuse to heed my words is at your folly (and that is to america's advantage).
but then, as i said americans turned away from you in droves for exactly those reasons.
the fact you don't believe it is justification enough to regard you as a poor fool, not worthy of further commentary from me. you've said it all and proved my point.
you agnostic (cutting and running now are we) conservative FOOL!
You haven't really said anything. Here let me help with a somewhat leading question, how did George Bush cause bear market barry's current economic crisis?
You're a jackass Newt. Where did you get that number, out of your ass? Reagonomics has destroyed the middle-class in this country. We need more Unions to balance the power with the powerful fat-cat parasites on Wall street.
Hey Newt, there was a video on here with Obama calling for your company. Ya fucking douche!

And your answer to unions is a race to the bottom? If it was up to the GOP, minimum wage would still be $2.55 an hour.

It is good for workers.
I worked for 2 weeks at grocery store. I would have earned $200 but it was a union store. How much did I make? $100 before taxes.
Unions are terrible! don't let them take over your workplace!

Newt sez: "At a time when we're losing jobs..."
So, if the US was gaining jobs, EFCA would be okay with him? No,not even. True fact: Newt and the big business backers he shills for are pathologically opposed to workers organizing for health benefits, better pay, etc., no matter the economic climate. There is never a good time for it.
teabagging4jesus 2 years ago
The reason Unions could cause jobs to be lost ist because of NAFTA and the globalization of our manufacturing. Our country rewards companys that ship jobs overseas. Not to mention allowing millions of illegal immigrants to stay in this country at a time when millions of Americans are unemployed.
fridgeman101101 2 years ago
Ok, if you are a Fortune-500 business executive who is anti-EFCA, or just a regular old multi-millionaire like Newt on video here, then I understand your perspective. FOR THE OTHER 99% OF US, this bill will create stronger jobs for our communities. Stronger jobs means better wages, which means more purchasing power, which will in turn be pumped back into the economy.
Oh, wait. I guess the Fortune 500 exec.'s have something to gain too...
WTF, Newt?!?!

if unions were so great why is it that for an example, ford, gm and Chrysler are failing and Nissan and Honda (factories are in the us) are booming... answer, its not there fuel efficiency the American companies are now better look it up, it is because every car that is American cost another $3,600 more for the same type of car that the other makes, why because of the union cost ...would you by the same style car for $18,000 or $21,600...i rest my case!

Unions more often vote for Democrats because they favorer the middle class and prefer trickle up economics that put money in the consumers wallets. Republicans know there is strength in numbers and thats the only reason they are trying to bust unions. A hard lesson they learned in the last elections. And all the union haters you run across are most likely bitter Republican voters that know they lost because of union voters.

public votes and public votes over public votes shouldn't be on the table, it's ridiculous, it serves no purpose other than coercion and bribery
it's a stupid, pointless, corrupt idea that only goes to compromise workers rights on behalf of one heavy handed organization or another
there's no need to have a public vote in order to surprise management. you can hold a secret vote just as quickly and easily
anyone who supports public votes is either looking to intimidate people, or is just a tool
justinl81 2 years ago
Just plain wrong - the legislation gives workers the power to decide whether the ballot will be secret or not. It takes that choice away from management and gives it to the worker. No wonder neo-cons don't like it.
mrfartwell 2 years ago
Having a secret ballot gives workers the choice to keep it secrete or not, but now you force them to declare if they are going to make a secrete ballot or not. The only reason for doing this is to coerce the workers to vote one way or another.
Bleakfacts 2 years ago
Under Card Check employees are given a card. They can sign in support of unionization, against unionization, or to have a secret ballot. Card Check does not take away the secret ballot. It gives employees the ability to choose. Elitists like Newt are scared of Card Check because unionization campaigns could take place without managements awareness and intimidation.

Actually, consider this -
The majority of mothers need to work.
Most people work longer hours than before.
Most households have net debt (aren't saving).
Most children are not raised by their parents, but by a 1:40 ratio of government employee to child...
In many ways our quality of life has significantly worsened.
How about statistics on US black families? They used to be homeowners, fathers worked and mothers raised the kids at home in safe neighborhoods. What happened?
stevemcgee99 2 years ago
You forgot to add a nearly _80%_ "Out of Wedlock" birth rate for Black America.
That, in itself, is destroying that community.
FreeAgain2 2 years ago
I agree, is a serious problem. The cause has nothing to do with the traditional black American culture. Before the "Great Society" black families were home owners, both parents raised children, they were in the work force.
Welfare regulation has incentives for unwed mothers.

MeLikeGoFast 2 years ago
Current law is that your wage slaves get a private ballot to determine whether they will unionize or not. The whole point of a private ballot is that you're not vulnerable to coercion, because nobody knows who voted in what manner.
Under card check, they'll have to announce publicly that they're trying to form a union, and thus you'll be able to run a far more effective intimidation campaign, since you'll know exactly who to target. Even if you think corporations are evil, this law won't help.
Alsadius 2 years ago
alsadius
Under Card Check eployees choose to have a secret ballot or choose to sign cards in order to form a union. THEY CHOOSE. Giving employees the ability to join a union by signing cards means that unionizing campaigns can take place without management's knowledge and intimidation. Scheduling ballots meens that management has a window to coerce and fire employees. Bottom line: Card Check will make unionization easier. You really dont have any idea what you are talking about, do you?
LegalizedTheft 2 years ago
Legalized Thret - But Card Check will also open up employees to intimidation by pro-union employees. Now, those people who sign the petition to get the pro-union guys off of their backs won't have the right to make their true desires known without pro-union members knowing how they really voted.
mbraase 2 years ago
mbraase
You dont realize that the current system opens up employees to intimidation by pro-union employees, but this coercion has no teeth. Pro-union employees can not fire you for being anti-union, so its not even coercion, its persuasion. The employers are the only ones who can coerce anybody. Now I dont believe a person should be coerced into any decision. So whats the solution? Dont tell the people capable of coercion (the bosses) that a union campaign is underway.
LegalizedTheft 2 years ago
it also subjects union supporters to making visible targets of themselves
management will know who to promote and who to hold back, who to relocate when there's a closure and who to lay off, who to bribe and who to penalize
it's not really good for anyone but maybe union thugs who figure they'll be more willing to resort to tire slashing and pet poisoning than the company
justinl81 2 years ago
management can't coerce or fire specific employees for voting against them in a secret vote, because they don't know who voted against them
unions are always grabbing at the "right" to harass individuals for their views, this is no exception
maybe you should be pressing for a surprise secret ballot system, where it isn't announced until it's over
justinl81 2 years ago
Justinl81
Management can fire the openly pro-union organizers and can sit each employee down, one by one, to explain why unionization is a bad idea. So first management cuts off the head and then coerces everybody else. The fact is that in a free society management would have no part in this process. The pro and anti- union employees would debate what is the best direction, majority wins. You know, people deciding their own future without intimidation. This is what Card Check does.
LegalizedTheft 2 years ago
everything you've said is the opposite of the facts
for example, telling someone what you think is not coercion, you didn't just coerce me, I'm not coercing you, my comments don't reduce your ability to go vote pro-union
also, a public vote completely opens you to intimidation by either side, it doesn't make you less vulnerable in any way
also, management has no part in a secret vote, all they can do is talk, they can't pry into voting and punish or reward anyone, like the union thugs want
justinl81 2 years ago
LegalizedTheft:
I guess I just can't see why anyone would give up a secret ballot on an important issue. Yes, union-busting is a real phenomenon(though not as common as some people think), but so are mafioso unions. Sure, they can't fire you, but they can break your kneecaps as well as anyone. We need to balance the two. Forcing a secret ballot, like we do for elections, seems the best way of keeping coercion out and letting the workers decide legitimately for themselves.
Alsadius 2 years ago
Asladius
You really think the Italian mob goes around trying to unionize American corporations? This is a one racist fantasy you have. Wal-Mart wage-slaves would love this support. The fact is that under the current system the only coercion employees recieve is from the management against unionization. And once again, under Card Check the employees can still have a secret ballot if they so choose. They can also choose to keep the management out of their business and just sign cards.
LegalizedTheft 2 years ago

Unions are archaic -- they create counterproductive herds and promote mediocrity.

domestic automakers almost single-handedly brought 3 generations into the middle class, and now they are paying the piper for that

This comment has received too many negative votes show
where the fuck does this idiot come up with these figures.
man these "christian"republicans gotta just stop pulling bullshit out of their asses. they've proved they have no knowledge of anything.
after their ruinous, miserable record newt is the last fucker anyone should ever listen too. oops except for the ignorant and stupid "christians" who believe everything their 5th rated trade school educated preachers tell em!
wntoply6 2 years ago
So, essentially you have nothing intelligent to say?
1hipster1 2 years ago
1hipster1 when a group of hateful, bigoted, intolerant, ignorant people, after being completely routed in the last election, on most every level & is unable to comprehend why, well i would expect one's inability to understand simple english.
such is the case with you. i'm never surprised by the denying, lying and blaming you "christian"republicans do (all in the name of christ too).
wntoply6 2 years ago
I'm digressing a bit; but essentially, you're statement describes a great hatred/disrespect of conservatism - a set of believes. Is that not the definition of intolerance?? Also, before mocking anyone's English, you need to learn what a sentence is, specifically a run-on sentence. And finally, what is your opinion on unions, card check, or any topic other than ad-hominem attacks? If all you can do is name call, then I will assume you are daft.
1hipster1 2 years ago 2
well 1hip`1, i've never mentioned conservatism. i've only talked, as far as i'm concerned (i never decide what you read into my comments) about "christian"republicans.
to me they have nothing to do with conservatism. "christian"republicans are ignorant, intolerant, bigoted haters. i don't really think a true goldwater conservative is in that category.
so before you get yourself in a tizzie, try to understand what i'm talking about. don't go off in your own direction to make a non-point.
wntoply6 2 years ago
If some Republicans and some Christians are "ignorant and bigoted", it does not mean that all Christian Republicans are "ignorant and bigoted" - it's completely illogical. It's simple logic. Look, I'm not a fan of the religious right, but they are not all "ignorant and bigoted" because I disagree with them.
1hipster1 2 years ago
you just gotta be able to quote me correctly 1hip1.
the apt phrase i use (try to use what you were taught in grade school english when you re-read it), is "christian"republicans. first the phrase has NOTHING to do with REAL christians, and it does not include all republicans.
when you can understand that concept, then let's continue the converstation. until then i'll take a pass. we're discussing two different animals.

1hipster1, Trust me, I've been down this road with Wntpoly6 on numerous occasions. The deeper you try and dig into his point of view, the less you'll understand.

I'm guessing no, it's much easier to call names than support an argument when the facts make his/her side even worse.
wytkracka 2 years ago
They're called "facts", I know you libs have issues with them. It's humorous how you're ranting about people being bigoted, intolerant, and ignorant through some of the most bigoted, intolerant, and ignorant posts I've ever seen on the interwebs, you should add "hypocrite" to your list as well, then you'll have described yourself perfectly.
wytkracka 2 years ago
wytkracka, after 29 yrs of practicing exactly what you're now blaming liberals of, you've not 1 inch of wiggle room & revisionist history won't work!
you turned many good republicans who didn't like being hyjacked by southern bigoted "christians" against their own party.
you got power, created massive disasters everywhere & now to save face, rather than own up & change your ways, as usual you deny, lie & blame liberals for your faults.
stop complaining, grow balls & accept your justice.
wntoply6 2 years ago
care to actually cite an example or would that be too much a diversion from name calling and tantrum throwing? Did Bush spend alot? Yep. Did some Republicans spend alot? Yep. Did it exceed anything done by libs and did it last 29 years? Nope! Talking about revisionist history while ignoring the tax and spend libs that have been around since, well, kennedy is, again, hypocritical, get the log out of your own eye before trying to remove the splinter from another's.
wytkracka 2 years ago
actually i don't have to cite examples. americans know what i said is true!
if you "christian"republicans were presented with examples, all you'd do is deny them, lie about them, then blame the democrats, clinton or obama, all in the name of god!
what you fail to get, you were thrown out of office & power because of your incompetence, hypocracy & those lies.
what's even more alarming, you did it while saying your party had "god on it's side" & promoted "family values". lies all of em.
wntoply6 2 years ago
Actually you do, otherwise you're just another petty, ill-informed, whining lib throwing about accusations because you can't find any facts. There's a real easy way to do it, even for someone as myopic as you, watch the vid, take the first point Newt makes, and argue against it.
Sincerely yours, Agnostic Conservative

Are you not capable of having an intelligent debate?
I don't understand how or why this bill would kills jobs, doesn't really make seance.
I like Newt, but I don't agree with everything he says.
Thank You for your rebuttal.
CMLovejoy 2 years ago
Let me take a crack at answering your question.. The reason, in theory, of why card check would kill jobs is this. Say you own a small shop on Main St. USA, You have 6 employees including yourself and one decides that they want a union. As things are right now, you need a certain # of employees to form a union, but this bill would change that. Continued since Im running out of space....
prosperia 2 years ago
So they go around to everyone and demand that you make a decision, no private vote, just on the spot yes or no. A union is formed. Now what does a union do? They raise wages, allow you to work more overtime, and basically force employers to do things that they cannot afford. Especially in this economy where small business is struggling. So in order to make up the extra cost they eliminate jobs.
prosperia 2 years ago
So why is the freedom to organize a bad thing?
Isn't that the video about freedom?
If the business treated his employees fairly then they shouldn't need to organize.
If the owner doesn't like it he can just fire everybody and start over anyway.
CMLovejoy 2 years ago
No, its about the right to a private vote. Its a fundamental value of America. Why do we have curtains on our voting booths? Why don't we have Acorn come to everyone's front doors and ask us to make our choice with them watching? To keep our choice free of coercion, free to decide without fear of repercussion. That is a freedom everyone as Americans should be staunchly defending.
prosperia 2 years ago
You're still able to organize if you want without it, but with card check union thugs are free to look at the results of the vote and pay everyone that checked no a personal visit, along with a few other violations, but that's the most atrocious to me.
wytkracka 2 years ago
what i said is actually wytkjracka, very accurate.
the fact you refuse to heed my words is at your folly (and that is to america's advantage).
but then, as i said americans turned away from you in droves for exactly those reasons.
the fact you don't believe it is justification enough to regard you as a poor fool, not worthy of further commentary from me. you've said it all and proved my point.
you agnostic (cutting and running now are we) conservative FOOL!

You haven't really said anything. Here let me help with a somewhat leading question, how did George Bush cause bear market barry's current economic crisis?

Newt for president!!

You're a jackass Newt. Where did you get that number, out of your ass? Reagonomics has destroyed the middle-class in this country. We need more Unions to balance the power with the powerful fat-cat parasites on Wall street.
gahonyeb 2 years ago
I agree, but we cannont make the unions so powerful that they become just as parasitic as the fat cats.
foxfairness 2 years ago
Actually, Reagonomics did more for the middle class than did Ford.
Do some resreach and quit being a lemming.

The problem is, that Unions are a large part of where this country has started falling apart.
