Not sure about the "multicore booting", as rc now shows CONCURRENCY=makefile. Regardless, it made no difference for me. Again, this is 11.10, not 11.04.
you may want to try editing /etc/initramfs-tools/initramfs.conf and changing the MODULES line from most to dep and run update-initramfs -u a couple times. This saved 3 seconds for me on an SSD. might be worth a shot.
nice videos and good tips. you seem like a very helpful person in the Linux community. a big performance boost I've come across(I compile my own kernels)is compiling your kernel with config_kernel_debug=n instead of yes. removes a lot of kernel overhead gives a noticeable performance boost.
@xprocharged1 Good trick, but I wonder with compiling the kernel (and any other apps) that the speed improvement is really worth it compared to the time taken in compiling?
Thanks for the tutorial! this was simple enough for even a noob like me to follow :-) ... Would you happen to know what I can do to fix the choppyness of videos (i.e: youtube) in fullscreen? the vids work fine in its default size but when i put it as fullscreen it goes crazy :-/
@quidsup that didnt fix the problem, but i found a forum that talked about this and disabled something in the CPU in the BIOS. now its running very smoothly in fullscreen. Thank you so much for this :-)
It's gksudo for gedit. DON'T use sudo for GUI apps. It wrecks users systems by mangling the owner of their ~/.ICEauthority and they will not be able to use sudo. This results in users having to drop to root recovery mode to chown. This is EASILY avoidable.
@ShadowEater120880 Would totally agree if it was being run from Gnome shortcut or run box, but I didn't think it mattered if you were running them from Terminal?
Hi. Great video. I'm completely new to Ubuntu (3 days) and I'm already trying to tweak it before really knowing what I'm doing. I followed your first couple of steps (not the 'advanced') and somehow, when I press restart the system logs out and I get a black screen. It doesn't start up again and I have to turn my computer off and on again. Any idea why this could be happening? I have nothing else installed so far. No other tweaks.
@quidsup Hi. First up, thanx for the quick answer. I tried to enter the grub but never managed. When I rebooted from terminal, it still froze on me. I tried going back and change the multicore booting back. I got an error saying that it failed to create a file in /root/.local/share/recently-used.xbel, because no such file existed. When I press esc during restart I get a write out which tells me "Unable to handle kernel paging request". I reinstalled Ubuntu 64bits from scratch but to no avail.
@quidsup Sorry for the double post. But I also wanted to add that I've been googling solutions and found it might be a bug. I'm not the only one it happens to and I don't think it has anything to do with the tweaks. everything else seems to work just fine so I might just accept (for the time being) that to restart I have to do it manually.
hi. thx for the tips. i do use gwibber often. do u reckon that disabling gwibber from the start-up applications would have the same effect as removing the application? thx.
@panderohit Its worth a try, but I don't think it will make much difference because the indicator-me (for changing instant message status) will still be running
@novelldesktop Cheers mate. Its definitely worth doing. For some bizarre reason it ends up quicker than a Minimal Ubuntu install built with the bare essentials of Unity & Gnome???
im completely new to ubuntu and hace NO experience in programing. but after playin around with 10.10 on my laptop and watchin ur videos, im actually changing my major to computer science/ engineering and making my graphic arts a minor. but quick Q: what is the best way of putting adobe on ubuntu without it freaking out? i have wine but do not understand ANYTHING about it. thnx
@MandLe08 Have a look at my video "Basics of how to use Wine in Linux" its quite old but still relevant.
Adobe has once again withdrawn any plans for producing Linux versions of their software. We have Flash player and Reader, but that looks about it for now...
Watching your videos I fear I fear I made a huge mistake by buying a macbook pro on an impulse purchase. Ubuntu served me so well for so many years without asking anything in return! And I betrayed it for something shinny and sleek that probably won't allow me to do half as much. Any comments on mac? Ever used them? Give me some hope :) (I'm typing this on my 400 buck laptop running ubuntu 10.04 flawlessly).
@xxTellTheTruthxx Yes I quite like now I've started getting used to it. I reckon its certainly got potential and it'll be interesting to see how it looks in 11.10
Excellent info! It shaved 7 secs off my boot! In your opinion; do you reckon that Kubuntu is more 'windows' oriented? Do you have slightly blurry fonts in open office than in Ubuntu (natty).
@resplendence2012 Cool. I guess Kubuntu is more Windows orientated than Ubuntu, they certainly look more similar at first glance. I popped answer about fonts on your other comment. Im going to take a look at Kubuntu again
Removing Gwibber in 11.10 removes ubuntu-desktop!
Not sure about the "multicore booting", as rc now shows CONCURRENCY=makefile. Regardless, it made no difference for me. Again, this is 11.10, not 11.04.
BHTX84 1 month ago
@BHTX84 Don't do any of these tricks in Ubuntu 11.10 it makes the bootup time slower.
64bit version of Ubuntu 11.10 comes pre-setup with multicore booting.
I haven't managed to get any improvement in bootup time by removing unnecessary packages, in-fact it seems to make things worse.

djlickit11 9 months ago
@djlickit11 Couple of things to try:
1. Boot into Recovery Mode from the Grub screen (hold down Shift key when booting up if Grub doesn't appear)
Then choose "Repair broken packages"
2. Reboot via Terminal screen and see if it comes up with any errors. Press Ctrl+Alt+F2, and then Ctrl+Alt+Del

the command for changing the system services does not work anymore. this is what i get:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Package sysv-rc-conf is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
E: Package 'sysv-rc-conf' has no installation candidate

Thompsonma22 9 months ago
@Thompsonma22 In Synaptic - Settings - Software Sources
1. Check that Multiverse is ticked
2. Change Download from to a different server. Click "Select best server" to get Ubuntu to choose the fastest server.
Close Software Sources and then click Reload button in Synaptic.
Hopefully that should work.
As I said in the video that sysv-rc-conf won't really make much difference to bootup speed
