from the description and the and sound i would say they are cut outs. the 20hp gain is usually a B.S. selling point. It does make any V8 sound like an old muscle car. You basically have a switch that by passes the exhaust and dumps out after the exhaust manifold. Hit the button again and the port closes and the car sounds normal. Not worth it IMHO.

BMW truly takes the time and thought to get the most horsepower out of minimal displacement instead of just designing a giant engine and slapping a supercharger on it for fake horsepower. Also the ///M3's handling is superior in every aspect to a GT500, the Mustang doesn't even have independent rear suspension, something that almost every single car has.

@noptig I agree @ Mustang. They beat expectations for 4.0 but unless you go to 8.5Krpm for 420hp it's still a 4Liter Inline 6 in a V8.

The M3 4.0 has ~330hp @ 6000rpm (or 420 @ 8.3krpm) and only 295ft·lbs torque @ 3900rpm.

Mustang's Non-Turbo 3.7lt (3700cc) V6 has 305hp @ 6500rpm and 280ft-lbs Torque @ 4250rpm.

I really don't see why M3's Engine is better engineered,i hope not for making 420hp @ ONLY 8300rpm.

Personally i can't even go @ 8300rpm on a Speedboat,i need low end power only to start.

The Mustang's 5.0 makes 415hp at 6500 rpm and 390 lb-ft @ 4250 rpm torque,while the M3 makes 420hp at 8300rpm and 295ft-lbs at 3900rpm.

At the Same RPM the 5.0 makes 415hp,the M3 engine makes something bellow 350hp and the Torque is 100lbs less at their peak.

You see,M3 Engine is a masterpiece for a Naturally Aspirated 4.0 V8,but it can't eat a 5.0,there is a reason they make High Displacement Engines.

Torque all by itself means squat. Yes the Mustang's engine makes more, but because it revs less it gets taller gearing and/or needs to shift up much sooner, so there goes the torque as far as the wheels are concerned, which is where it matters.

@truebassB So 390 * 6500 / 8350 = 303 ... so they are pretty much similar. Advantage of large displacement is less friction == better milage, advantage of high rpm is less weight. I think we all can agree there is no point to put a 48L (2929ci) in a car due to the weight, but the torque is awsome (but at 700rpm, so ... hp still the same).

I think hp and torque must be the least understood relation out there ... reminder hp = tq*rpm/5252

This is the strangest logic ever ... hp is all that matter, and how well it deliver over it's rev band (torque curve). if gearing is the same, you end up with the same torque on the wheel no matter what torque the engine has, if they produce the same hp. If you want low rpm/torque you go diesel (why diesel have good milage). BMW 3.0L TT Diesel : d (3.0L turbo - 306hp / 440ft-lb @ 1500 rpm)

About HP Vs Torque,you're not wrong but each on their own,personally no matter the HP i would prefer a Low End Torque Monster with a lot of HP a few rpm after,this is my personal opinion,because Torque gives you a kick to start and you're not starting @ 5000rpm or so,after you start if you can keep up the torque you're increasing HP and that gets you going.
