I think a good comparison of Primus's drummers would be Rush's drummers. Sure, Rush was good with their first drummer, John Rutsey, but when Neil Peart took the seat, they were GREAT! Same with Primus and Tim Alexander. Brain and Jay; they were good, but Tim Alexander is GREAT. Tim accents and fills are far superior to Jay and Brain's. But that's just a drummers point of view...

To say Primus isn't Primus without Tim is pretty retarded. Tim's a damn good drummer (as is Jay), but it was his apathy that kept Primus from going anywhere creatively. Jay brought new life into the band and now we have a new album. I, personally, don't miss Tim. Jay can keep up with Tim's material and he KILLS on the Green Naugahyde stuff, so why bother bitching about it? Tim never defined Primus, anyway: Les and Ler did.

Jay does 16th note high hat beats (like on this song) constantly, and even on the old primus stuff live (i saw them in london). he's too light and it's boring imo. herb was far more powerful and gave a much better energy to primus. plus herb is way better technically anyway. herb was a big part of primus, i certainly wouldn't dismiss him. herb>jay>brain.

Jay Lane is the funkiest drummer Primus ever had. He's like making love with the High-Hat. And these fills you hear in Green Naugahyde are amazing and fit so well with Les' groovy bassplaying. Still, Brain was great and I especially like Tim Alexanders more metal-grooving drumming, but Lane just has the funk.
