So I meant to get this game, but I bought Gradius 3 for snes instead when I was just at my local retro game store. Not disappointed with my purchase, I just was expecting this game. It's so easy to confuse these old 2d shooters for each other.

I agree, RType 3 was a huge leap in the series, even RType Final with the number of ships feels short and not as impressive.

i find cyclone force the best with the blue upgrade. it's like an explosive spread gun in contra and has area damage. even though it doesn't have it's own attack when it's away from the ship, it acts as a giant shield which you can actively move back and forth.

For one thats a vertical shmup and although that game is hard as fuck because its nearly a bullet hell game, r type is timeless and is still going also type bullet hell games into the search you will see games that make ikuruga look like childs play

It looks and moves way better than Super R-type, but the music in Type 3 gets on my nerves. I know that it is a remake of the original score, but I really loved Super R-Type's music.

one of the few games i've beaten. Have you checked out Ikaruga though? That games makes rtype look like crap. Only out on a few systems such as gamecube and dreamcast.

i dont belive i was. Way to assume though. I believe a real comparison would have compared gameplay, which as any real gamer knows has nothing do to with the graphics. How about a comparison to games of the same era? Gradius 3? Silpheed-cd? The sega cd remake of that was great. I actually have the original but the sound is pathetic.

Although I'm no R-type veteran, and as much as I like Final, I have to agree that 3 is better. The level designs in Final are really boring, and the number of ships doesn't quite make up for it.

R-Type and Gradius series are much different for me, for example Gradius is a bit slower and have a weapon system, while R-Type doesn't have weapon system, it's faster and has this thing that follows ship (i don't remember what is the name of this thing) so it's much different

only reason i never liked R Type was that you lose all your power ups once you die. having to start all over again sucks. it takes the fun out of schmups. radiant silvergun on the other hand is what shooters should be like.

It may sound a little insignificant, but I was really impressed at the start of the stage the way the ship starts close to the camera, then pulls back. I really like that! Kudos Irem!

Ah, that mode-7 zoom-out opening... Fucking classic. My favorite R-Type would be a toss-up of this, and R-Type Delta; they're both just too good, I can't decide. Also-- This is on the VC?! I heard about R-Type for the PC Engine/ Turbo Grafx on the VC, but not R-Type III. Hot damn. Even more of a reason to buy a Wii, even though I still have my SNES and the R-Type III cartridge. Also-- excellent choice, sir, on the Cyclone force. Best damn force in the game.
