The 45 single of Superstar, on which this appears as the B-side, was released in 1969 to see if there was a market for a concept album. There was, and it led to what later became the famous rock opera. The discordance and unusual time signature of the material that troubles you was included as a hint to what the later album might encompass.
i love that split second in the video ted neeley,s face shows up. im just wondering if anyone noticed that. its a cool effect! at minute 1:01 and 1:02 great vid indeed!

Saw the play, and bought the album.
But my friend had the 45, and we loved hearing this version. Probably haven't heard it in over 30 years.
