Hello....nice video. Is there any where to wade fish( or belly boat) and explore the St. Louis on foot? I love to wade fish and want to explore the river but don't know where to start. Any Suggestions?
These are the kind of days when you hit so many fish that it gets boring and you start to look for a species that is more of a challenge. I love trout fishing but catching river smallmouth of a fly might be better.
Hey I had a question for you, I got a fly fishing rig for my 22nd birthday but know nothing about the sport. I was wondering if you knew of any good books or videos that walk you through learning to fly fish from picking a pole, how to tie the line to the reel, how to tie the leader to the line, how to tie a fly to it, casting, and well the whole nine yards. So far I have been practicing casting and I am getting better but I have so much more work to do.
How do you like your trolling motor? I just sent it my registration/title papers for my scadden pontoon like yours so I can add a trolling motor. Can you motor upstream with yours? What lb thrust do you have? Would you recommend this over a gas motor?
one thing i dont get about fly fishing. say you have alot of line on the ground, from stripping it, and a fish hits. do you let the fish take all that line out, and then start reel back in?
some people when the fly fish and the line is all over the ground they let the fish take line and then reel or some people when the fish hit they will like reel in the extra line in quick depending on what kind of fish it is
please answer- im looking to get into fly fishing for smallmouth and brook trout, but what i dont understand about it is what to do after you have casted your fly into the water. do you let it sit, or is there more technique to it?
@elementskater48 Let it sit is one technique, . But with streamer fishing, usually your doing the strip pause, strip pause. Sometimes the fish want fast strips, sometimes slow. Let the fish tell you what they want. Different flies require different techniques. ie Poppers use a quick strip to make the popping noise.
I am a avid fly fisherman and the technique that he used to catch the bass takes to much time to do. He was reeling up the slack when you can just keep pulling line. Its easier and takes way less time. But good video
Thanks for the good nod on the video. The boat has a open floor design, factor in strong winds and fast current....going to reel prevented the slack line from getting caught & tangled on the boat & $75 fly line getting chewed up by the motor. Not much walking room on the boat :) A stripping basket was useless this day.
@SaginawRiverFishing You can get fly line from $25 to over $100 dollars. The RIO fly line I was using was about $75. If you keep up the maintenance on the fly line, they last for quite a few years, unless you run them thru a motor prop :)
With pontoons you can control the boat with fins attached to your feet, while you use two hands to fly fish. Most pontoons give you easy out & in access. Find a shallow spot, move off the seat & stand up, right in the middle of the boat, fish, then get back on the seat to keep going. Canoes are much more streamlined for traveling distance. Toons are much more stable when standing. Trolling motors can be attached to both.
You could catch little trout on an 8 weight. You wouldnt feel the fight as much but you could still get them in easy enough without horsing them. Just let your rod tip do the work
Just wondering what size the pontoons are on your Scadden? Are they 19" or 20"? I think they make them with a 20" now but last year they didn't. Thanks. Cool video. Nice, fast smallie fishing. I'm looking to get the same boat.
13' foot, 19" I believe. I have the bladderless version. The 20" toons might be for the next sizes up, like the 14'9 x2 and X3. I have the extra frame to use as 3 man and works great on this boat, you lose some storage though. Thanks.
Clouser minnows 2"-3" long. Stained rivers I go with bright colors or solid black, depending on the clouds/sun. I like to use weighted flies when fishing subsurface because it gets the fly down to the fishes level quicker, especially for short deep pools. Each body of water is different, so don't be afraid to experiment until you find something that works.
Horrible audio. Next time, have your camera man on another boat, using an attached mic with a sound dampener on the mic. Also, record the sound seperately and you will be able to edit it better.

I have that same boat. I love it, because it works great as a big one man boat or a small lite two man boat.

Good God! Those smallies are more explosive than the large mouths we got here in Texas.

Its called a pontoon boat and that one cost around 1600 but if anyone is thinking of buying one try a single man pontoon boat or a float tube.

I'm new to all this boat stuff but whats the difference between pontoon boats and a canoe?

Thanks for the info. I own a canoe but never got to use it yet. I should get a pontoon also just in case I am bored with the canoe

i have a question for you. i have an 8 weight rod, is it possible to catch small trouts with it or would it have to much power?
snowboarddude117 3 years ago
If your small trout are not the size of King Salmon, then you have too much rod. 3-5 wts are good small trout rods.
