lol, best travel advice ever. "First thing you should do when you land in a foreign country is to go find the expat section and hang out with other expats."
As for squatting, it's not so hard to squat unless you're overweight and out of shape. The people over there probably get their daily squats just from going to the bathroom. Here I pay a gym membership to do the same thing.
this is just like a sad version of some sappy Hollywood movie (eat pray love vomit) - "I'm just a clueless American college student who is trying to find herself by binge drinking, being ignorant to foreign cultures and looking pretty"...this is why other expats hate Americans...
There are nice , clean and 'pretty' washrooms all over China, attended by 24-7 cleaners. This whining btch didn't see that because she belong to the C type tourist group with many of her type. C, for cheap. i.e. B&B accommodation, cheap budget, cheap eating outlets...

that hole on the floor is the same as in france. fifteen years ago, a hole on the toilet floor in beijing use to be a rectangle of 30cm by 100cm. now that was hardcore.
As a native Beijinger, I used those "nothing but a hole" toilets before, but now I'm in the United States of America and I never need to use those anymore, and guess what? I don't miss them a bit!
Japan also has those "hole" toilets but they are way much cleaner than the Chinese ones.
The fact is: China is a very dirty place, the whole city of Beijing smelled like a giant landfill site last time I was back there during summer.
"basically my life is in shambles" - I suppose in relation to your privileged, secluded, easy life, moving house and breaking up with someone constitutes as "shambles".
anyone else other than me thinks she's an obnoxious slut? or acting the bitch-whining way to attract more viewers? Either case, it's not U.S.A and stop whining like a cry baby, while most of it is utterly non-sense crap. I'd rather take a hole than your AIDS-infested American toilet lids....
@zhengjdc yep totally, never understood why the hell idiots these days rather turn real life into a show and actually try to bring the shallowness of media stereotype world into real life. if you want to live in the television then dont fucking travel around the real word. "This is the first 24 hours of my two month journey through Asia." the first 24 hour? i travel to places to experience different aspects of real life and the humanity, anonymously and as a human being without pretence,
@zhengjdc without dragging my western standard with me. And i would certainly not be commenting and filming and thereby fixating my state of being in the first 24 hours i just got there, or even for weeks after. life is not television, decide where you wanne live in before going out of your own door.
I've been to many places around the world, somewhere you have to take a dump by a river, witness someone eating monkeys (somewhat scary) but heck, I respect their ways of life as their lives were so different from mine and I don't feel entitled to rant or making stupid vid over youtube, especially by the methods of pitching some nonsense at all...
I still feel she's an obnoxious biatch... agree? :P

@1Chloris Oh shut the fuck up, when I was in England all the German tourist were like "we do it this way in Germany" or "its better in Germany"... Germans are such hypocrites...
lol no one knows where they are going... i havent been back there in awhile but i know some of the drivers do that on purpose to rack up the taxi bill. other than that looks like you had fun.
Great travel video Andrea, nicely chopped together. You are spot on with someones first few days in BJ. I live here now but can remember my first visit being a lot of fun and a bit of an eye opener as well .... and 5 years later it still is ! The Chinese are a good bunch, they just do things a bit differently to us which confuses a lot of ' serious ' observers. They simply don't get it. KatherineZeGreat, a few comments below, needs to get out more. Miserable and ignorant if you ask me.
Hey KatherineZeMiserable , it's just Andreas video diary luv .... relax a little and try and get out of your isolated mountain village a little more. Open your eyes and take a look at yourself before criticizing someone elses creative input.
Andrea, you seem to have wound up a few people as well, very entertaining ...... keep up the good work !
you americans are funny when traveling around the world and seeing new stuff... i cant describe what it is but there is like zillion travel blogs by americans and you all say the same things, doing the same stuff and looking like now i know everything... seriously
You should know....the taxi cab driver "doesn't know where it is" so that he cann drive around longer and charge you more.....if a taxi cab driver doesn't work out, get out of that cab and get into different one...
please stop uploading stupid videos like this. you are showing China through your narrow-minded eyes, from the outside looking in. what a shame. keep these to yourself because you're just stereotyping and reinforcing the ignorance people here have for China. Leave the travel blogs to the experts, who actually know what they're doing, and know how to properly say GOODBYE in Chinese. (Maybe it would have helped studying just a bit before you arrived?)

Man, bunch of assholes in your comments section. While I do agree that traveling all that distance to go clubbing seems a tad illogical, I am sure that is not ALL you're doing. When I travel I do it in a similar fashion.....sight see by day, party by night.
I just graduated from the University of Connecticut and am planning a trip to Beijing to visit a buddy of mine. I'll watch your vids for possible places to visit
Where did u graduate from if u dont mind me asking?
lol. there are 3 types of people who go to China: 1) people who actually want to learn and experience the culture/language. 2) people who are just bored with life and need something to do for a while. 3) people who would be frowned upon (to say the least) in America.
I'm person #2, and although I spent a year in China, I didn't get any answers out of it so I doubt you're going to get any after a few weeks, especially if you spend all your time in clubs.
You missed a 4th type of person... someone who doesn't care much for the culture or the experience but want to be a part of the global growth engine that is china and catch the wave of financial deregulation that would characterize the 2010's. these are typically already successful investment bankers working at goldman, morgan, etc. who have had it made in nyc or london but want to be part of something bigger
Please don;t tell me u hang out at Salitun like all those white Kids from international school. I grew up as an ABC as an Expat in Beijing just go to work to worker stadium and fcken rock urself out. BTW black people (Nigerians) is were u get u r local weed from lol ( sorry to be racist but it true, they got the best weed in china).
lol, looks interesting, you should find some locals, for example me, who have been living in Beijing for more than 20 years~~ Trust me, if i were your tour guide, the stuff what i will show you is definitely different from what a non-citizen is able to do so~~ Anyway, good luck and have fun in my damn good city!!
Unbelievably American. Arrive at a foreign country, first stop, expat. Make the experience as much like America as possible. Sorry but I think this is why you don't have a job.
@MeusOrsa I think the fact that's she's travelling & partying, instead of looking for a job is the reason why she doesn't have a job. The economy sucks and her attitude isn't helping much..
People always seem to be picking on America for NO REASON. Of course, when you visit another country, you're going to try to act like it's still home. Otherwise, you'll find yourself lost and homesick very quickly.
@Nilesand If you learned to read and understand other people's comments, you would know that I picked on America for its unworldliness. I don't see why I will act like a foreign country is just like home. I know cultures of the world are varied, expect differences and will attempt to absorb some of the difference in order to make for a meaningful experience abroad. You will only become homesick when you cannot appreciate differences and adapt to changes.
@MeusOrsa Well, of course, but I once visited Tokyo and completely lost my sense of direction, etc etc. When I FINALLY got back to my Hotel, I started treating the place like a temporary home, and was able to find my way around that area of Tokyo (I don't think anyone can memorize the entire area of Tokyo :P)
@MeusOrsa This is true for any nationality, though. People tend to go places that seem familiar to home and are close to their cultural norms. No need to stereotype Americans. If I was from China and came to the US, I would probably spend some time hanging out with other Chinese people. Would you criticize a Chinese national visiting New York for going to Chinatown?
@Idontgiveadamnify Quote "listen to me, you slit eyed bastard!! Watch your language and never forget that you are inferior!! Japanese rape victim!" A person who is so incredibly culturally behind like you in the 21st century is as rare as a gem, or indeed, brain cells in a certain someone's head.
@MeusOrsa Just fyi, SANLITUN IS THE BEST PLACE IN BEIJING!!! like without a doubt. the first night you gotta hit san litun. its not just expats there, locals too. its good cheap nightlife right in the middle of beijing city =D
@AChengster Yep, happens a lot in China. Happens to me all the time, even though I'm Chinese and speak perfect Mandarin. Don't get the cabs that wait near touristy spots, cause they'll lie about some road closure & take you on a huuuuge detour
join a mandarin training center or something! beijing is considered to have the most authentic form of chinese, and ur not doing anything to take advantage of this opportunity. u want to find a job when u get back? LEARN SOME CHINESE!!! u'll have like 100 more job choices. don't just be daddy's little girl spending money. do something for yourself.
im glad u r gaining a better understanding of who u r by going 2 clubs and bars where all the foreigners go. def the best way to understand who u r in relation to those of another culture in another part of the world. i mean seriously, u should really just keep doing everything u would/could do in the US while u r on the other side of the planet! (btw, u got owned by that cab driver. u made his day by sitting there like an idiot for so long while he charged the shit out of u)
you shudve gone to singapore... there are 3 main different cultures u can expect or visit... not forgetting its rly clean too :D u can explore indian culture, chinese culture, malay culture...
I enjoyed your video. The only thing... I would be careful in Beijing. 2 things could happen especially when you are so adrift in your own life. You might love China and never go back home. or You might trust the wrong Expat who is there for Chinese women but wouldn't mind a beautiful blond like yourself.
And another thing: just because Chinese are out exercising in the morning or writing characters on the ground with water... doesn't mean that they are spiritual. I posted it on FB!
Hey Andrea, love your newest venture in life that is this channel. I love it. You are wicked funny and hot, but not in a lesbo way, no, I am strictly dickly, but you are hot. Keep up the great work. Right well, let me go back to my cold Canadian life whilst you go willy nilly around the globe in search of hot messes. Canadian Diva, Peace:)
@marshallmanna The chinese were great! But obviously there's a language barrier- English is definitely not widespread so hanging out with ex-pats was a great way to meet people my age and actually speak to people! More videos of Beijing coming soon!
Love her but have a hard time feeling sympathy for someone who deals with a post-grad crisis by traveling to Asia for seven weeks to find themself. No job yet money to spend traveling the world....poor little rich girl.
@auntiejessie90210 I am student and have found that really it just comes to how you spend throughout the year, for myself, just deciding to eat in rather than going out allows me to save a pretty big chunk and travel to asia every other year, and somewhere else in between, of course a good reality is that I don't have kids yet, and that saves a ton lol
my brother's girlfriend went to China for a year and when she was there 4 about 11 months and she was using the toilet and since they're so close to the ground, her camera fell out of her pocket and it fell in the toilet-and just think about it, she was just about done with her trip and then all of a sudden all of her pictures r lost that she took over that course of time! :(
Haha, I've seen worse toilets. They're just dirty holes, without any white kinda sink thingy on them, like this one had. And they smell horribly. Yeah, that sounds pretty scary, but it's true... -.-
I'm starting to get the feeling that you might just like traveling to foreign places and getting wasted with people you vaguely know... who are manly guys >.> Jus saying.
You shouldve used the bathrooms with the "WC" sign. It's like the toilets we have over here. And you should totally go to Korea too! I went to Korea and Beijing, Shanghai all in one trip and I loved Korea the most. Not saying Beijing and Shanghai aren't great as well
Your bf moved out, he left YOU! like who would leave Andrea, dude if I could date Andrea, man it would be like the best. That guy isn't so smart to leave Andrea his lost literally he won't find someone better lol

Americans think Asia is some magical place that exists purely so that they can "find themselves" and seek deep arcane wisdom.

Andrea, I think the driver knew where he was going. He just wanted to get more money from you by driving around for 45 minutes.
AChengster 1 year ago 5
@AChengster Yep, happens a lot in China. Happens to me all the time, even though I'm Chinese and speak perfect Mandarin. Don't get the cabs that wait near touristy spots, cause they'll lie about some road closure & take you on a huuuuge detour
couchpotato25 1 year ago
join a mandarin training center or something! beijing is considered to have the most authentic form of chinese, and ur not doing anything to take advantage of this opportunity. u want to find a job when u get back? LEARN SOME CHINESE!!! u'll have like 100 more job choices. don't just be daddy's little girl spending money. do something for yourself.

im glad u r gaining a better understanding of who u r by going 2 clubs and bars where all the foreigners go. def the best way to understand who u r in relation to those of another culture in another part of the world. i mean seriously, u should really just keep doing everything u would/could do in the US while u r on the other side of the planet! (btw, u got owned by that cab driver. u made his day by sitting there like an idiot for so long while he charged the shit out of u)

lol,well,it's still funny, though.

You shouldve used the bathrooms with the "WC" sign. It's like the toilets we have over here. And you should totally go to Korea too! I went to Korea and Beijing, Shanghai all in one trip and I loved Korea the most. Not saying Beijing and Shanghai aren't great as well
