Yes, the foot pedals are used for alternating clean passages with distorted ones while playing or to add / by-pass effects like delay, wah-wah, fuzzy, reverb, chorus etc. Many guitarists use this kind of stuff. Also, most of them use a kind of processors that incorporate various types of predefined effects. Others (especiay the classics hard rock guitarists) use only a simple pedal with a switcher between clean and distorted tone and one effect (especialy for the solos).

Others, don't use any kind of these (Kirk Hammett for example) but have a profesional technique person behind who changes all the stuff during the show. That means that person has to know very well what to do and when to do it in order to sound well.
