Left 4 Dead has WAY less physics. It's originally a PC game, and I have the developer tools (as does everyone else making levels in the community). All those big explosions you see with 300+ pieces are prebaked models. The engine isn't calculating them, it's just rendering a model that looks like a huge explosion. If you have too many physical things in one level colliding with each other or acting, it lags tremendously.

I don't work for Sony. I simply know about how games run.
