Stumbled across this older video today and love it because I am currently insanely angry and frustrated with Ancestry.com. I thought they were THE site for genealogy and was excited to finally open a paid account, and for what? I'm finding NOTHING useful there. It just keeps referring me to the same things . . . census records and birth/death indexes. I had better luck on free sites!!
I know you want to become a teacher and that will pay the rent, but you should get a degree in genealogy. I started young too but I still haven't had any formal education. I hope to change that in the next two years. J.Paul - Escondido, CA. P.S. I know this is one of your old videos - great job!
The biggest crooks and liars on the planet. They probably sleep with Microsoft. Do not trust or believe a thing that comes out of Ancestry.com I was on there just yesterday and tried to leave a message for one of the members in the list. Ancestry wouldn't let me unless I took out a trial paid membership. I won't give those greed mongers a dime.
My family is very difficult to look up. We have alot of Jrs and our names, for the most part, are very common names. There is some bulls*** that i dont believe. For example, according to Ancestry.com iam related to Winston Churchill (British P.M) and Peregrine White (1st European born in the US) I just dont really believe it. I will add though, true or not, i find it interesting/fun to attempt and find where i came from. Iam German, Bohemian (Czech), and a whole lot of British!
"You don't have to know what you're looking for. You only have to start looking." This is Ancestry.com's ad slogan. It sounds like "just give us your money for no reason" to me.
American consumers, we must be smarter than everyone thinks we are.
I don't take issue with any of the things you do. I understand that when I make the tree public, the information and photos I put up can be used by anyone for any purpose at any time. I rarely ever cross lines with One World Tree. But I do hate it when other users sloppily connect my tree with theirs without really considering what they're doing.
I don't upload to Ancestry - here in the UK we have a site called GenesReunited, I don't know whether you use it in America..?
Anyway, you can upload your info and create an online tree and also search other people's family trees BUT it does not mix others research in with the original records.
I signed with Ancestry.com for two years as a world deluxe member to mind my ancestry in Mexico. After two years of research I find not a single name. Why? As Ancestry.com later told me after taking my money for two years, "We don't have any records from Mexico."
wa wa wa, to bad, you probubly agreed to not being credited in the terms of service, NO ONE EVER reads those things same thing for all the other stuff you sed that i didnt pay attention to
I agree, but not necessarily for all the same reasons. Ancestry, in my opinion, makes it FAR too easy to simply append information. When I first got into family history in 2001, I lifted connections liberally and never sourced anything. My tree was vast, but meaningless.
I'm now redoing everything the right way, and value the ease with which I can find a lot of info on Ancestry...I just wish they'd stress the importance of proof and sourcing to newbies.
Do not use living members in your tree on a genealogy site, unless they are aware. If you post info, you can not count on it staying private if you share your information with strangers
It is forever in the data base of the site and will not be removed. These people think they are entitled to post your family's information.
Thank you for the info. Doing Family Trees by hand is much easer to interact with. (Feedback with the registry marriages, etc.. that is:- "No that's not the correct one, but that is thanks"

Did the Nazi's use LDS genealogy data, to help find out who were the Jewish in WWII ? Did the LDS genealogy library use IBM card sorting machines in the 1930's to process genealogical data, the same way that the Nazi's used IBM card sorting machines to find the Jews in Europe, as referenced in the book "IBM and the Holocaust" ? Did the LDS genealogy library give to the Nazi's, Jewish genealogical data already punched onto IBM punch cards, to help the Nazi's locate and persecute Jews in Europe ?
I have to agree with your views on the One World Tree. To me it just seems like a catalogue of errors. Half of the trees on there I'm betting are completely sourceless, compiled from online sources which are full of errors. The whole idea of the One World Tree turns a well researched tree of yours and mine for example into a joke.
I don't trust anything that comes out of that tree at all. It's interesting to look at, but nearly always wrong. :(
I appreciate your videos. I have found that same problem about Ancestry using that information and benefitting from it without giving credit. I now do things a bit differently. Thanks!

I'm eager to read the history of my Family Name. So, if I was interested on it perhaps you also consider to be useful.
Resolve one of the mystery of your existence. Enjoy telling to your grandsons the best tale they has never listen to before.

When I use ancestry.com, I rely heavily on the Census data as opposed to other people's trees. That way I don't have to back track. Great video

Thanks.
Yes, I agree too re: One World Tree. I think they took it down, discontinued it,etc.
I'm redoing parts of my tree in order to reinforce sources, etc.
Thanks again.

@lmdw They discontinued Ancestry World Tree but they still have One World Tree and believe me it is trash.

@trader0108 The genealogy library wasn't even around at that time.
