That's a genuine MTS car phone sold by dealers like US Communications in Burbank in the 1960's for $ 2000. Although it has a dial, the dial is actually not functional. The electronics package was in the trunk. The phone is an Automatic Electric "Starlite" princess phone which they modified. California didn't get dial car phone service until 1982-before that you asked the operator for the number. All this stuff is on my car phone history site, which is my at ID below plus dot-com.
