The original FMA ended with ed dying in Berlin 1943 in a Zeppelin crash, Al getting his body back and losing his memory. huh. I'm certainly much more content with this (the original FMA was made at the same time the manga was being written and they kinda got ahead of the authors and they made their own storyline. Brotherhood follows the correct storyline and was made later).

@Enigmaticmuffin27 Ed did die twice, once by envy and once by the crash, but each time he was just sent to the other side of the gate, the second time being when Al sacrificed himself to do bring him to their side. Afterwards he brought back Al and was sent to the other side of the gate again, which goes into the movie.

No. The Zeppelin crash was (Oct. 2?) in 1916. Only his parallel reality version died, upon which he returned to Amestris in full body. He gave it up to save Al and return him to his body, upon which Ed in his Amestrian body returned to this reality in 1921. 2 years later in the conclusion, FMA: Conqueror of Shamballa, the gate is reopened and both Ed and Al end up in this reality permanently. Ed is still missing 2 limbs but Al gets his body and memories back

Ed came back from the gate and got killed by Envy, then Al went and brought Ed back at the cost of his whole body, and then Ed decided to bring Al back at the cost of his own body as well, and then Ed goes on to live with Hohenheim in London until the movie takes place.
